Is *Insert any semi automatic rifle* legal in NJ?

Recommended Posts

thoughts on thumbhole stocks being a loophole around pistol grips? kinda new to rifles in NJ.

NJ does not define thumbhole stock.. therefor IMO it could be in most cases considered a pistol grip... so I would err on the side of caution and assume it to be a pistol grip...

I've looked over the evil features and it looks like this gun is compliant from the factory - Anshutz MSR RX22

One version has a fixed stock, 10rd mag (factory) and the evil feature is the pistol grip.

However, I'm having a hard time finding anyone in NJ that has one for sale or has shot.

With that in mind, before I place the order to have it sent in locally, did I miss something...is this NJ compliant?

What is legal and what is not with guns is pretty straight forward.... If it is semi auto and has a detachable mag it can have one other feature and still be legal... In this case it is pistol grip...

The only other concer is if it is banned by name which as far as I know it is not..

Is this NJ compliant if I get 15rd mags and a fixed stock?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zastava_M70

if it is not specifically banned by name...

and does not have more than ONE of the evil features...

then it is legal.. just by looking at it and guessing.. you would need to pin the stock.. and pin a brake on there.. as well as removing the bayonet lug if there is one.. besides just the 15 round mags..

those stocks are not really comfortable so there are far better choices in that type of gun..

Thanks Vlad, I found one with a wood rear stock just like an AK.

I read through this thread, I think I understand it for the most part.

From what I gather, a bone stock Norinco Sks CAN have a bayonet, am I right?

Aren't fully automatic rifles completely banned in NJ?

As far as I know zastava M70 is fully automatic, with a switch between semi and full auto fire. I was responsible for one while serving the army in 1985. The design is outdated now, but it was easy to dissasamble and maintain.

By the way, I have a question of my own:

I am interested in Ruger 10/22 in Tacstar version. It has couple of the eveil features, like movable stock and pistol grip. I was thinking is it OK to pin the stock permanently and make it "legal" in the eyes of the law? I got confused whan I had seen it at one FFL delaer from NJ, but I forgot to send a question to them. I know that the FFL is not exactly the right source for deciding the legality of a firearm, since the cutomer needs to clear that for themselves, not the FFL place. That is the reason that I am asking you guys for advise.

Here are couple of links to check out what I am talking about:

Thank you.

The Zastava M70 sold here is not the original AP-M70 and is only semi-automatic.

In NJ you can only have a fully automatic weapon if you owned it prior to May 1st 1990 and registered it with the state.

The "M70" sold in the USA Comes via Century Arms as:

Zastava OPAP M70 , 1.5 mm reciever and old furniture.

Zastava NPAP M70 , 1mm reciever imported as a single stack magazine rifle then converted to double stack with american parts for 922r compliance.

I came over here from Ex-Yugoslavia and i also though that all AK s were automatic and i never heard of a semi-auto AK untill i saw them in the store :)

As for the ruger you should be good to go if your stock can be pinned into a permanent position you will only have a pistol grip as 1 allowable evil feature and that s ok.

Would the Steyr 40th anniversary rifle be considered ok (assuming the flash hider is replaced with a permanently attached muzzle brake)?  According the website, the stock will be factory marked 40th Anniversary STG77 and not "A.U.G."

Or does this fall into the "substantially identical"?

http://www.pjs-steyraug.com/STG77.html

Thanks for the assistance!
