Motorcycle Transport???

Recommended Posts

Guns and motorcycles, kinda like ice cream and root beer. They just seem to go together. I am working on purchasing my first firearm. It will be a handgun. I also LOVE motorcycles. But, I don't like stockers. I tend to like the kind of bike that is loud, obnoxious, and just barely legal. Rigid chopper type stuff. If I want to ride to the range, is it permissible to have my firearm in a locked lock box, unloaded magazines and ammo seperate from the gun, in a backpack? No stops for anything other than fuel would be my thinking as at that point it could be considered a concealed carry situation I'm sure. Any thoughts? Advice? I know it's my right to own and transport a firearm, and I have the privilege of riding a motorcycle legally here as well, but can I combine the two without un-due risk to my personal liberty?

Thanks for listening and I look forward to the responses.

You're pi$$ing in the wind. Obnoxious motorcycle...You'll be testing some LEO's knowledge of gun laws.

Stay low key! #1 obnoxious mc's don't do $hit for the riding community #2 why temp fate?

If you want to take this up with me offline fine. "Loud pipes save $hit!"

Guns n' motorcycles?

I thought it was guns, fast cars and fast women - but I could be mistaken.......

Best to keep a low profile IMHO. I ride too, but no straight pipes or other attention getters for me. Minivans and SUV's are stealth four wheeled transport. Haven't gotten a speeding ticket in well over a decade even though I drive just as fast - but minus the muscle car........

Actually, it's officially "lawyers, guns, and money" but I digress.

I looked thru the transport threads best I could. Did not find any reference to motorcycles or how to transport firearms with one.

Old School, nope, no reason to deal with you that I can see. I hope all goes well with you today.

No Offense I hope. I'm just kind of opinionated. I ride and transport in saddle bags, in NJ I'm in compliance, even lock the empty pistol in the pistol case, ammo in the other saddle bag.

Where legal loaded pistol in the saddle bag or tank bag.

I ride a Gen 1 FZ1. Yes I have a pipe on it and I guess it's speeding ticket capable but the moded airbox and the can are about the same db. Just be low key and use your head and you'll be OK.

PS, since I don't yet have a firearm, my other toy is included. Not quite done yet, but VERY close.

Wow! Panhead. Is that a Cerriani frontend?... That was a classic combo in the day. Display quality build.

I ride and whenever I transport, I take it easy and make sure to comply with all traffic laws. Speeding and careless/reckless driving are the easiest traffic laws to break so just be careful.

I either transport in a tail bag, saddle bags, or a backpack...typically the tail bag. I hate backpacks for riding, they are uncomfortable and tend to get heavy, but they are convenient for when I transport anything gun related.

No, not a Ceriani, just a modern 39mm HD Sporty front end.

Again, thanks for the info. I'm looking forward to my purchase and I think I have make up my mind on what to get. More on that in another thread.

You are good to go, even though it is not required by law and I will say when I transport on 1 of my bikes I will have it in a locked case. That would be my 83 kick only Shovel, there is really no place to put it other than a bag strapped to the seat and for that I will put it in a locked case. Now if I am on my 08 Ultra, well that bark-a-glide has lockable side bags and TP so I don;t worry about that, actually the party I rode down to in Louisiana earlier in the year I had 4 different HG's with me.

Just transport as the exemption allows while inside the NJ state lines and under the rules of FOPA and your are good, if you have a CCW check the state laws for the sate you are going to and or traveling though as well as any deviations you may have and you will be good.

Oh I hear you on the loud bikes, I do thing loud pipes save lives, but there is a right and wrong way to do that, I have never been pulled over for loud pipes and I have had some loud bikes, it all how you ride them as you probably already know.

Just don't turn into this type of rider:

Thanks all for the props on the bike.

Thanks as well for all the cool headed replies. I really do appreciate it.

Man, It's a small Sig but the first bike in the pic is my 83 Shovel, the one in the back is my long gone 00 FXDL that her and I parted ways doing between 65 and 70 in Ohio on the way back from a weekend party in Colorado. One of the old ones of mine you would have liked was my 50, you can guess the model, lol Also a 50 Pre unit, yup a box stocker Trumpet. Other trumps were a 68 and 70 rigid chops, both with narrow twisted upper springers 12" or better and a 74 chop set up the same as the 68 and 70. Ain't nutin but cool headed responses as long as I get out on the bike, might get a little edgier over the winter if it's bad but I still ride as long as there is no snow on the road.

Now my 12 YO daughter gets all girly like and won't ride with me when the temps are below 20, but I do call to quits at 0 myself, but I am getting to the age where I don't bounce and I do get cold now.

Older HDs are great. One day I'll have a shovel to keep my Sporty company.

Just so I understand the law correctly. Does the bag need to be locked, or can just the pistol case be locked(and additionally have the gun locked). I ask because I have a solo bag(smaller single saddle bag), and it just has latches to close.

Obviously I'd have the ammo in a backpack, would putting a lock on the backpack zippers be going over board?

First, please congratulate me for resuscitating a six-year old thread  :clapping:

My four-wheeler is about to bite the dust and I'm going to use my 2-wheeler for commuting. Do you think there's any way I can carry my O/U on my bike and not get hassled by 5-0? In it's soft case, it's about 52" long. I have hard saddle bags and a luggage case/rack on my FLHTCU, so I think I'm OK with ammo. Just trying to figure out if there's a way to carry the gun long - maybe vertically? Even broken down, the thing is big (32" barrels).

You will be completely legal doing that but will local law enforcement realize this? Maybe maybe not. I'm not a lawyer, I don't think you will be arrested but being a gambling man I would bet on you being stopped searched detained for a few while the patrolman calls his Sargent to figure out your status. You should be able to do what you want but we do live in a state where gun rights go to die.

Would it fit in a soft guitar case?  Golf bag? Or something that is obviously a case for something else?
