Holding Current NJ Pistol Permit, Moved from NY With No Permit

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have a multi-part question and I'll try to be a succinct as possible.

  • I recently acquired a Pistol and Gun Permit in NJ. Hudson County to be exact
  • I have a New York State License with my address showing a PO Box in New York City
  • I work in New York City
  • I live in New Jersey, Hudson County (most of the time)
  • I used to live in New York State from 94-2008 at my parents
  • I use to live in NYC about 2 years ago

I want a New York State Carry permit as the states are so close to one another and I frequent both, and my parents and most of my friends live in NYS; taking my gun to NYS for target practice would be awesome. My parents own a house in NYS. Unless I have a fundamental misunderstanding of the New York law and English language, it seems that if I could prove that I also reside at my parents in NYS I might be able to also get a NYS permit to carry. It seems that if you have a business in NYS you can get a permit according to the site: http://www.co.ulster.ny.us/sheriff/criminal/pistol.html | http://www.nyfirearms.com/blog/nys-gun-laws/

Have any of you come across this or have advice? I seems states are acting on their own behalf and circumventing the Constitution. I don't get how this is legal to make it illegal to take your gun. Grrrr. Utah CCW course this saturday. Florida next.

Thanks.

Hello NJGF Vendor FFL,

I greatly appreciate your time reading this and letting me know what doesn't matter and what does, and what information I should be providing. Specifically; what avenues are necessary for me to take, in order to legally take my handgun from NJ and carry it on my person in NYS, considering I sorta live in both places.

With respect to your questions....

  • Permit to purchase a Handgun.
  • New York State Drivers License
  • Thanks for letting me know
  • Additional residence at my parents house when I am travelling for business and working in New York State. My job is a consultant, and I travel quite a bit.
  • Thanks for letting me know

Assuming having drivers licenses from two different states is legal. If your NY drivers license has a PO Box on it, would a PO Box on a NY City drivers license be an legal ID to even apply for some kind of a permit?

If you want a carry permit in NYC, it is my understanding that either you have to live there....(very doubtful, unless you live upstate, politically connected or you are a law enforcement officer).

Or have an established business there that involves large cash transactions....

Or you can be an armed security guard in NYC with carry restrictions like carry while on duty.

The only solution I see is moving to one of the upstate New York counties that give unrestricted carry permits. Understanding that the permit may take upwards of six months or more (one person had to wait 11 months, another 13 months). The permit will NOT be valid in New York City. Will NOT be valid in New Jersey either or any other state for that matter. You can apply for a Florida and/or Utah CCW out of state permit so you can carry in some states on your consulting job.

Map of NY State Counties that show where unrestricted carry might be available.

Do you have two residences? you say you live in NJ "most of the time". How many days a year do you stay at your parents house? Is irt actually a residence or just a place you stay? Do you have an interest in the property where your parents live? Part owner?

It seems to me you are a NJ resident who needs to get his DL changed and forget about a NY permit or taking handguns to NY.

Hello, new owner of a handgun in NJ. Had a question for all of you experts out there! I keep seeing all these different things online so I have an suv so the trunk area is accessible to the back seat area. From my understanding, it needs to be locked in a case and its fine to be in the trunk of my suv? Also my other question.. the ammo.. that needs to be in a separate case? Does it need to have a lock on it or can it just be a bag with a zipper?

A fellow forum was asking about a display case for his wife’s pistol I believe. So I decided after seeing some display cases for insane prices, to make my own out of more or less cheap prices.
This one will be for my Nighthawk Custom Falcon 1911.
I started out with a humidor I had when I was on a cigar kick with the club.
Humidors make perfect cases for your gun.
Why? Its designed to keep moisture in so your cigars don’t dry out. Ones that are well made have a nice tight seal.
‘But John, we don’t want to keep moisture in. It will hurt the gun’. Correctomundo! But using it to keep moisture out works too! If you are not a cigar smoker, a humidor keeps the cigars from drying out by putting a moisture pad inside. We simply won’t be using the moisture pad nor the cheapo humidity gauge they usually give you.
So lets start. One used but still in great shape humidor with glass lid. If you don’t have one, you can pick up something decent for about $50. I added a lik leather NH tag to use to open lid. They are air tight and easier to open with something to grab.

If you use a humidor, they sometimes come with a lil shelf and divider. Toss them.
Next, we added a little antique bronze clasp. 5 for $12 on Amazon. They come with tiny wood screws. You’ll need a jeweler type phillips head and a small awl to start a hole. Do not screw in without a starter hole. Also a mini pad lock with skeleton key.

Next, you’ll want something to lay in there like velvet. I chose purple velvet. Rather than buy it by the yard, I actually got 2 - 14”x14” pillow shams with zippers on Amazon for about $11...
This is a lot cheaper than buying it by the yard plus you don’t gave to sew anything. Just stuff it and zip it.

You will need something to stuff it. That is your choice. I already had a bag of poly fill from another project. You can even rio open al old pillow and use the guts.

Next is rechargeable Silica packs. I got a 25 count bag cheap also on Amazon. I chose to line the bottom of the case and also throw some inside the sham.

Once you beat it and adjust it to get in the right position, you can see how the gun sits and adjust as needed.
Next is optional and not cheap. I picked up 2 - Sensor Push bluetooth temp/humidity sensors for $50 each. One for the box and one for my safe. After calibrating them and pairing them to my phone, I inserted one into the display case.

You don’t have to do this but I’m a bit of a tech nerd so.... [emoji6]
You can also use a cheap digital one too.
This one transmits data and stores 20 points which you can set alarms in the app if moisture increases. Kind of more important in my safe but....[emoji16]
Here is a sample of the data. I just put them in so it will take time to level off.

That’s pretty much it. Outside of the sensors, its cheap, easy and looks great. You can fo crazy with it or go simple.

Guess the state has a new system for pistol permits and FID cards?!?

As a gun owner in New Jersey I understand the mess of laws in the state. Now that I own milsurps I'm curious is it lawful to own bayonets not carry just own (of course). If it's legal what about taking them to the range for a photoshoot. Lastly I have a question about carrying a knife mostly as a tool of course I have a Swiss knife and I used that is my tool normally and for my understanding it's under the lawful purpose clause or whatever. I was thinking about getting 3.25 in pocket knife foldable blade not assisted in any way I assume lawful I don't know if anyone's had trouble with carrying knives New Jersey other than the few court cases that's still left the wall kind of vague like New Jersey likes it. I'll probably keep carrying the Swiss pocket knife but I find that the blade may be weak for some things but I do like it's simplistic size mostly everything I would probably need for my basic lifestyle. I'm sure carrying a knife has been debated a lot in this forum before but I haven't seen anything so if you have any links or just want to give me the simple rundown I'm fine with that.

So I've got my FID and am looking to purchase a replica MP40 airgun for target practice. This is the gun in question I'm particularly looking at https://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Umarex_Legends_MP40_CO2_BB_Submachine_Gun/4312
The gun itself is capable of full auto firing at roughly 450fps. It also includes a 52rd pellet mag. I've read up on the airgun laws and know that airguns are considered firearms under NJ state law, so does that mean every firearm law applies to airguns also or are there exceptions to them where you can purchase any airgun as long as you have an FID?
      Thanks
