No Midway handgun ammo sales to NJ, even with FID on file

Recommended Posts

I received a response from Midway to my e-mail (see post #15) this morning. Here is the response...

Dear Bob,

Thank you for your recent email. We do sell ammunition to New Jersey if we have valid documents on file. If you would like to order ammunition please send all documentation via email attachment, fax to 1-800-992-8312, or mail to 5875 W Van Horn Tavern Rd, Columbia, MO 65203

If you have any additional questions or comments, please feel free to contact us at 1-800-243-3220. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT; Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CT. You may also email us at [email protected].

Thanks for Your Business!

Meghan

MidwayUSA Customer Service

Midway is a company that is too vested in customer service to exclude ammunition sales to an entire state. Their communication skills may need to be enhanced by becoming pro-active, rather than waiting for the purchaser to call and complain and then explain the need for documentation.

Hope this settles it for everyone - just send a copy of your FPID when purchasing ammo. One day response time ain't too shabby either.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Glad to here it. See my post above. My turnaround time was within a couple hours if I recall correctly.

I doubt strongly that NJ is "going after" Internet sellers - the OP may have been told that to take the onus off the seller in order to retain their business, other than ammo. It is a vendors choice and Midway apparently feels it doesn't need NJ's ammunition dollars.

I can see NJ sending out a letter requesting vendors get a copy of the buyers FPID before shipping ammo. I know that I have had one on-line vendor request that of me and I have a copy of my FPID (SS# redacted) on my hard drive just for such an occurence.

I have no idea of the legal ramifications of trying to force an out of state vendor to comply with state laws in transacting interstate commerce, All a vendor has to do is ask for a copy of your FPID.

Ten years ago NJ forced out of state internet retailers to give up the customer lists and records of sales for cigarettes. Tens of thousands of people in NJ received bills for various taxes, the average person's bill being about $2,000 if I remember correctly.

NJ seems to have a way of getting out of state companies to tattle on you.

Update: Midway will indeed no longer ship handgun ammo to NJ.

This is a recent development because I bought handgun ammo from them a few months ago. I asked them for clarification on the date this went into effect.

From support:

Dear Steve,

Thank you for your email regarding your order.  I'm sorry but due to states laws we are not allowed to send handgun ammunition to your address.  We do have your FOID on file but unfortunately state laws still don't allow us to ship handgun ammo to you and .22cal ammo is considered handgun even if it's purpose is for a rifle.

I removed the handgun ammunition from your order and it was allowing my to continue to the payment page.

Midway Blows! Whatever savings you would have got buying from them is offset by their outrageous shipping charges! Either learn to reload or buy from Natchez or Powder Valley!

Natchez blows. I will never buy anything from them after that price gouging they tried to pull from 2007-2009. It wasn't everybody, it was basically Natchez and Cheaper than Dirt that were charging 2-5x what the rest of the market was on various ammo and items.

As far as Midway is concerned, I don't buy from them much, but I wouldn't have a gripe against any store simply because they refuse to sell to NJ. I certainly wouldn't sell to NJ, who needs that BS. Why on Earth should they have to put up with all your BS problems? And threats of lawsuits by your state? When there are hundreds of millions of people out there that actually don't want to screw them over.

Speaking of CTD, they still send me emails to this day. I got one this weekend titled "Ammunition For Your Carry Gun." Did any of you guys in Jersey get that one? That would be a kick in the crotch LOL ;)

Yes, I got it. I don't think they geo-target or otherwise change their mailings for a specific market.

That said, I do have a carry gun, it just doesn't get carried in Jersey :)

Again, this is just Midway not wanted to deal with it, because there is NO NJ law that prohibits mail order sales of handgun ammo.

You want them to do what? Fight the good fight for Jersey? You guys won't even do that for yourselves.

Good for Midway. If they are getting shit from NJ's government, you guys should go complain to your government, not expect Midway to fix it for you.

I inquired and got a customer service response back from Midway saying that NJ sales would be made as long as they had a copy of one's ID on file.

I posted this earlier in another topic, but repeating here..I sent my foid and dv info in for Midways files and this is what I just got back this morning..time to buy and hoard. I also just called them on this matter and talked to a Julie who talked to her supervisor..I was told Midway has no way to electronically track NJ..whatever that means...maybe Larry Potterfield needs some letters, emails, calls personally..

-----------------------------------------------------------

Dear Steve,

Thank you for your email with the included NJ Foid card. I'm sorry but due to New Jersey's regulations we are still unable to send handgun ammunition to your address.

Ray, I don't know how you're doing it, but maybe your account hasn't been "updated" to reflect the most recent changes. Expect the ability to purchase handgun ammo from Midway to disappear at any time.

That's what I'm fearful of too. Maybe it did change and they didn't zap my account as of yet. I'm thinking they're still OK with shipping handgun ammo to NJ if they have your FID on file and linked to your account.

Just to note some additional information, apparrently Cheaper Than Dirt changed their policy sometime between April 2011 and April 2012. My ammo order back then, went through, without any action on my part. While wondering why I still hadn't received a shipping message concerning my order from the other day, I noticed this on my order confirmation email.

Your Order contains ammunition and is being ‘Shipped To’ a New Jersey address.

Based on New Jersey regulations we will need a copy of both your FOID card and Driver License before the order can be shipped. Also the order can only be shipped to the address listed on either of those 2 documents.

Please fax a copy of the FOID card and Driver License to us at (800) 596-5655 and include your order number on the fax for faster processing.

Like I said, that wasn't there this time last year.

    • i've lived in this house nearly my entire life. and i can't remember my town sending an assessor to look inside.
    • This mindset baffles me. Shooting is a depreciating skill. If you don't practice, you will become worse at it. If you value your life enough to want to defend it, why would you rely on a skill that you don't practice? If the best I can do on a good day is scrape a pass on CCARE, I would be determined to get better at shooting - and yes I did see that you scored 98% - but your attitude appears to be that you shouldn't have to practice first. Trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, perhaps you mean that the government should not mandate that you have to meet any kind of standard before you can carry. I agree. There should not be any mandated quals. However, only a fool would be carrying a gun he can't use effectively. It does little to protect himself and creates a danger to everyone else because the misses will go on to hit something or someone after they miss the intended target.
    • OK let me explain. If you use your 9MM to qualify you will probably need to practice before you qualify so you go through 125 rds of ammo. Using expensive 9mm ammunition that's probably close to $0.40 around is costly. If you used your .22 LR pistol the price drops to less than 10 cents a round. I easily qualified with my Glock 226  ( 1 miss out of 50) but burned up  a lot of ammo practicing. We should not be required to qualify to exercise a constitutional right and it should not cost a few hundred dollars to do so.
    • Up for sale a Nikon Monarch 1.5-4.5X20 Riflescope. Scope formerly sat on top of my old Mini 14, so it is used. It also has some aftermarket lens covers on them (Buffalo Creek I believe). I'm asking $100 for the scope. Willing to drive within an hour of Woodbridge or meet half way. Buyer pays any shipping costs. First to post "I'll take it" wins the scope.
