Hi Everybody,

I am new to this forum and to gun ownership in general. I've always been interested in firearms but was scared away by New Jersey's stringent firearm laws. Finally, within this past year, i took the plunge and submitted an application for my FID. I received it a few months ago and immediately purchased a 12 gauge for trap shooting. I've been having a blast. However, I've been looking into acquiring a rifle that i can plink around on at the range. I'm very interested in purchasing an SKS. I've read that they can be had for cheap and i love the look and feel of them. I had a chance to shoot one that my coworker owns and since then i've been sold. That being said, my coworker is not a New Jersey resident.

My question is... Being a New Jersey resident, how can i go about purchasing an SKS? I noticed that a great deal of them are offered online but obviously that is a no-no in NJ. Also, they do not seem to be offered in any of the local gun stores, more than likely due to their age. I'd rather not have to travel out of state.

Any suggestions? I'd rather not have to travel out-of-state to a PA gun show or something.

Best,

Michael

You can order and ship any ( nj legal ) rifle and handgun to the state of NJ, only catch is it cannot be shipped to you, and has to be picked up at an FFL, I've seen a bunch in gun stores, I know NJ firearms guild in rahway had some a few months back, expensive and over priced, but they had them.

Wait, what's considered a "no-no"?

You can order it online and have it shipped to an FFL (gun store) near you. You pay them a transfer fee and then it's yours.

Why don't you want to travel out of state? I will tell you out of state (PA) will most likely have the best selection of SKS' and milsurps. Very rarely will you find a NJ gun store that has SKS or milsurps in stock, and if they do, they have one or two.

I'd suggest Sarco in Easton, PA. They have about 25-30 on a rack that you can fondle and choose the one you like best. They run from like $300-400 I believe, depending on condition.

Welcome to the forums.

I strongly encourage you to join the New Jersey Second Amendment Society (NJ2AS.org), watch the video below and share it with your friends.

If you are looking for a plinking rifle, you may want to consider a Ruger 10/22. I would love to own an M1 Carbine, but can't in this state, so I dressed my 10/22 up to look like one instead. The ammo on a 10/22 is cheap and you can shoot it at most pistol ranges.

If you are looking for an SKS, be patient. Go to the Marketplace and put a forum alert on any new postings. They pop up here once in a while for about $300 or so.

All the best.

Just saw 5 pristine yugo sks's there a few days ago. They were the imported by Cherry's stamped ones..........light stock and under the cosmo brand new gun.....the "unfired kind"......price was 375$ on the rack but they had tags on them that said 400$................i asked and they said they are selling them for 400$

Thanks for all the answers guys. I am in Jersey City. I suppose i'll take be either taking a drive to PA or checking out a website that can perhaps ship it to Caso's Gunarama. Should i just call Caso's and ask first? Do you guys know any good websites? Also, in your guy's opinion, which country of origin is best? Yugo vs. China vs?

Before you go to look for an SKS, read up on them. There is a lot of info at the following places:

http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php

http://www.milsurps....splay.php?f=133

http://yooperj.com/SKS.htm

This will keep you busy for a couple of days and will help you decide on what you want. I have a Chinese and Yugo. They're fun to shoot and ammo is cheap.

Thanks, Sigman. You're the man. Any suggestions on some sites that i can have ship to my local FFL, if in fact i decide to purchase one?

Wideners had them a few months ago, but they have sold out.

http://www.wideners....ir=700|701|1029

Try some internet searches to see if you find someone with them in stock. The only problem with this is you won't be able to see what you're getting. I would check Sarco as suggested. Call them and see what they have. I know a FFL in North Jersey that may have some unfired condition, but they will cost over 400. Let me know if you want his info and I'll PM you. Good luck!

Welcome to the forum, a lot of good advise already so all that's left is to let you know you will need to post photos of what you get or you will get a bunch of these..

Welcome to the forum. Just a word of warning regarding the SKS if you decide to purchase out of state. A removable magazine SKS is on the banned list, but a fixed magazine is fine. Hope you find a nice one, and enjoy shooting it. I have a Russian and a Yugo. They're all sorts of fun.

Maks was looking to possibly part with his (a Russian, of course ;) awhile back, I don't know if he sold it or decided to keep it. If you do buy, I would recommend the Tec sights, unless you find a Chinese one with peep sights already installed.

I read on forums that people were happy with these:

http://www.aimsurplu...spx?item=F3RSKS

AimS is a top notch company. They aren't unfired ones but for 300 bucks they are in good condition and will be good shooters. I would sign up on the email list and you'll get an email when they come in.

Tons of other sites have SKS as well. I usually gravitate towards the companies I have dealt with before, even if their prices are a little more than others.

p.s. - I would highly suggest going to Sarco. I know you're in Jersey City so it would probably be about a 60-90min drive but would be well worth it. You won't get to handle any guns you buy off the internet, and for used guns/milsurps, you usually want to look at them before you buy them. Even though you may find driving out there a pain the a**, it would be your best option. Ordering online and clicking your mouse a couple times and picking it up at a local shop is easy, but nothing beats playing with 20 rifles and picking the one YOU want, not the one someone else picks for you. Plus Sarco has a ton of other cool and odd things to spend a good amount of time wandering around and looking at.

I have a pretty desirable SKS(Norinco paratrooper with spike bayonet and folding stock) that hasn't been shot in awhile... was thinking of selling but it wouldn't be cheap... Give me a shout if you're interested.

I was at Butch's Gun World today, they had a Chinese SKS on the rack with an aftermarket stock on it and no bayonet, they wanted $300 for it.

I picked up a M44 Mosin instead of that today. Figured y'all would want to know about it.

How much for the M44?

$325 I paid for it, tag said $350. 1945 Izhevsk, with the laminated stock.

They had a 1955 Izhevsk there too, tag said $300.

Butch's is 45min south of me, but I really love going there versus Bob's, which is 10 minutes away from me. Butch is a good guy.

Hard to buy it for $170 if it's sold out.

Average going price for the Russian ones on Gunbroker are right around what I paid, prices on those damn things just keep going up. Chinese T53's are going for about half that price.

the m44s at aim go in and out of stock every week or two, i got an email the other day saying they will be coming back in stock very soon.

Snap as many as you can up for that $170 and resell them on Gunbroker for $300 a pop then.

Prices on the damn things just keep going up. I figured I'd get one before they get priced to stupid absurd levels, like American milsurps already are at.

I have an extra Russian SKS I may sell... shoot me a pm.

Typical, most Yugo, Polish, Russian SKS are fine. The tricky ones are the Chinese, some of which come with removable mags.

Have not priced them out recently.

It was my understanding that the Yugo SKS has a folding bayonet and a grenade launcher and is not NJ compliant, I have one and it is fun to fire and moderately accurate. I bought one NIB for under $200 three or four years ago, haven't fired it in two years since it is a pain to reassemble the trigger mechanism.

This is incorrect. So long as the SKS retains the original fixed internal magazine, it is perfectly legal.

I just got my FID for long guns, although I don't know anything about guns or ammo. What is a good gun to get my hands on that will help me learn more but won't break the bank, at the same time being ideal at home defense?
