NJ bill to ban laser pointers

Recommended Posts

Honestly, do you really think the people who wrote this law put as much thought into it that we just did in the past day? When they wrote laser lighting device, they thought to themselves a laser that lights something up.

Clearly indicated in this section

(7) shines, points or focuses a laser lighting device beam, directly or indirectly, upon a person operating any vehicle, including, but not limited to, a bus, light rail vehicle, railroad locomotive, railroad car, jitney, trolley car, subway car, ferry, airplane, or other facility of transportation. As used in this paragraph, "laser lighting device" means a device which emits a laser beam that is designed to be used by the operator as a pointer or highlighter to indicate, mark or identify a specific position, place, item or object.

That is not possible to do if you cant see it, IF the wavelength the LIDAR uses isn't visible. And, even if you can see LIDAR, opposed to my original post, it's still falls outside the statute.

So while i think we have all learned something, lol. and i will admit, My understanding of LIDAR just shot through the roof, as well as the near-Visible light spectrum, a radar gun is not used to point or highlight a car, it is used to measure an objects speed.

They wrote the new law because they were not able to catch anyone with the old law. The old law prohibited an act which means you have to catch them in the act of committing the act (or close proximity). Hard to do when a laser pointer is so easy to hide. The new law prohibits selling an item. Easy to control.

If you really wanted to you could argue that LIDAR highlighter as it is used to pick out a specific car, and that it does identify a specific position. (It mesures how far away the car is then does so a split second late and calculates speed bases on the change of distance between the two measurements)

In reality I agree with you it does not apply to to LIDAR systems. Even if the bill was written much worst, to where it would actually apply, it would probably still be ruled that it did not.

I called my local district and left a message to the secretary for the local senator, and assemblyman-woman , I hope she actually delivers the message, but I would also like to send an email so is there anyone willing to write a template I can use as my punctuation and grammar isn't the best

Thanks

I'm not sure about you guys, but feel like I jus got a PHD in physics.

The true problem with this bill and others is the logic.

It's not the tools fault, it's the people that use the tool to commit the crime. If they keep up we will be using plastic sporks

Are people actually contacting there legislators about this? We need to let them know this bill is a waste and wont prevent anything from happening besides losing tax money for nj because we'll all just buy our laser devices from online or out if state, and restrict our rights even more in this communist state

I hope so! That was the point of posting this in the first place.

I just read a disturbing article on NJ.com about a bill that is being advanced to ban laser pointers in NJ that emit more than 1mw of output. The bill is A3169 and after I read the bill, I see that it will ban the sale of Crimson Trace laser grips, along with all other firearms laser aiming devices.

From the bill:

I know that CT uses the federal maximum allowable output of 5mw, and I'm sure that others (LaserMax, LaserLyte, etc) likely do as well. Even though this isn't a firearms bill, it will still have a ripple effect on firearms owners and dealers in NJ. I urge everyone to spread the word and call your Assemblymen to voice your opposition to this bill.

Anybody have a sample letter drafted to circulate and save time?

Does anyone really think that the final signed version of this bill will prohibit LE from using lasers for their weapons or for speed detection. I'm betting nothing will change for them.

LEO's can talk on their phones without a BT Headset.... So no, nothing will change for the "elite".

I could give a rat's @ss about LEO's use of lasers (though there isn't the usual exception for them in this one; probably because the author doesn't realize it covers weapon mounted lasers). I care about the law abiding citizen who is going to be punished for the bad acts of a few stupid people. The possession of lasers >1mw will not be affected, just the purchase/sale.

Received this in my Inbox:

*** NO NEED TO CONTACT SEN. VAN DREW OR ASM. ALBANO RE: LASER SIGHTS ***

Thank you all for your response. I received a call from Senator Jeff Van Drew. Both he and assemblyman Albano have agreed to amend their bills so that it does not affect the use of laser devices on firearms. It is obvious to me after speaking with him that that was never their intention. Please let me know when the amendments have been made so that I can review them. In the meantime you can stop calling, writing, faxing and sending emails. I believe that the bills will be changed appropriately. They are trying to stop the rash of misuse of laser devices that have been pointed at ships and planes. The coast guard, military and state police have all been concerned about the damage these devices can inflict. The NJ2AS is no longer actively trying to stop these bills.

Once again, thank you for your response. Activism does work when good people get involved.

President - NJ2AS

Given that this bill has already passed the Senate (39-0) and is awaiting approval in the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee, it's a little late to "amend" the bill in its present form.

It needs to begin the process ALL OVER AGAIN if we are to avoid being fooked.

Wagers, anyone???

The Assembly bill can be amended on the floor. Once amended and passed in the Assembly, the new language goes back to the Senate for a new vote. The language of the amendment(s) need to be scrutinized, but so far Senator Van Drew and Assemblyman Albano both seem sincere in their efforts to address the problem.

FWIW, Micheal Bane mentioned this on Down Range Radio this week, so Assm. Albano may get quite a few more calls this week from out-of-staters and NJ 2A patriots who don't belong to this forum. And if Tom Gresham mentions it this week on his radio show, the Assm.'s phone may just melt down...

Can you please tell me what's the point of this bill if there's already state and federal laws in the book that makes it illegal to use a laser point in an unlawful act

You're probably just venting here but ask the Braniacs who drafted this bill, not NJSAS. They're here to address the infringements on our 2A rights which they did, have done and will keep doing.

You're right, im a member/ donator of nj2as, if they tell me that the bill is going to be revised to exclude firearms then im prone to believe them and that's all I need to make me happy

There isn't one. That was exactly my point earlier.
