Anyone have a "Safe Room", and wants to admit it?

Recommended Posts

I do not, don't think I ever will but that guy knows what he's selling. Problem I see: Yeah great, I bought a $5,000 door that can't be broken into, won't be ruined by fire or smoke, but how much do I have to spend additionally to have walls in the room just as safe and secure?

This guy's just talking doors....Rich folk toys.

Just set the house on fire, he will be out shortly.

The only way to realistically build a "safe room" is in new construction. If you were building a new standard platform frame house, it wouldn't be terribly expensive to build a thicker than standard foundation (I don't know a ton about foundations off the top of my head, although I could look it up if I wanted to). Follow that up with building underneath your garage floor and building a wall in your basement separating your safe room from the rest of the basement. If you supply adequate ventilation it should be superior to any of the fallout shelters of the 50's/60's. Thing is, with a "safe room", whats the point? Bombs? You're going to die anyway or you don't want to live in whats left. Plus if NYC goes in a flash you'll have a second or two to live anyway. Tornadoes would be justifiable but we don't have those here obviously. Want to get the family in there if there are home intruders? Good luck getting there.

Before anyone criticizes my idea of building under the garage, its nothing a little steel beams and construction or civil engineering can't fix. Plus it looks less suspicious since you need a concrete ceiling anyway.

The Swiss interestingly enough require fallout protection in their building codes. May be interesting to look into.

No way way am I spending that kind of cash on a door unless the whole room is steal. Sheet rock I'd kick, foundation I'd shoot with a few mags then kick. Id rather have a good dog and a pump.

Now if money was no object I'd have a shipping container buried and edged to my foundation with a door cut and a secret passage leading into it. Reinforced with flame retardant insulation and another layer of steel. Fully wired from my neighbors power box and stocked with goods and having a solid sliding steal door to lock behind me. Cameras around the house and property with a ps3 controller turret in each corner of the house and in a few trees around the property. Ohhh and one of the trees has a 50. With crazy zoom and a windage monitor running to it. Gas lines run through the house that can deploy a gas of my choice tear knockout ect.. also a runway exit that leads to the woods that can be blown out opening to the outside with a machine gun mounted dirt bike in case I need to bug out.. wanna give me a loan??

The problem with a "safe room" is, if the SHTF and you have to bug out, it won't do you any good. And you can't live inside forever... this isn't the movie "Blast From the Past" (where a 50's family thinks the nukes are enroute and lives in their bomb shelter for 20 years).

That room looks awsome .. but is it a solid steel frame all the way around?? If I was a burglar I'd have to see what's in there and the first thing I'd do is start kicking in walls. I want the old school moving bookshelf or opening fireplace. In all reality though I second the bug out point if its a temp thing like waiting for police to back you up then cool but as for a safe room for shtf I'd rather bug out to a better location.

Fellas,

Let's not mistake a 'safe' room with a bunker for a SHTF scenario............

Building a 'safe' room should be on everyone's to do list as a matter of security and by that I mean it doesn't need to be a fortified bunker.

Given the layout of my home each bedroom, my wife and I as well as our children have one point of entry....the door...your SAFE room can be as simple

as removing the crappy pre-hung door.... double/triple up door framing with 2x4's, replace hollow door with solid wood door, all hinges deep lagged into framing

and lastly place a dead bolt on the door that penetrates at least 3" into the framing....

This safe room access point can gain you valuable minutes in a nighttime home invasion scenario..........

We worked with a carpenter on a project like this for a high profile client....we did the electronic piece but I queried him on his entry way construction for the bedroom...

They went so far to clad the walls with plywood and then sheath over it with rock....

So while the above is wild, we should not mistake a bunker with a expedient safe room...IMO....

Well said. A safe room is supposed to buy you some time and discourage an intruder. Sure, walls can be kicked in. That takes time and forces the intruder to commit himself in a very conspicuous way. Plus, you're not likely to sit there and watch it happen without sending a few rounds in that direction. I can't see any intruder doing this unless he has a specific reason to cause you harm, above and beyond a burglary. If that's the case, you've got more to worry about than a home invasion.

This door is impressive, but not in keeping with a safe room, IMO. .

In terms of security the door is formidable. However the walls are the potential weak point. I'm assuming unless you have 10gauge steel plates, you're looking at rebar reinforced poured concrete in the neighborhood of 8 inches thick.

Really only feasible in new construction with a freshly poured foundation. No?

Actually, what I was referring to was a room to hold firearms. I don't need to hide.

I have the perfect spot in my basement to build a safe room. But, when I started inquiring about the doors I gave up. For the price of the door I can get two decent Liberty safes, and take them when I move out of Jersey in 5-6 years..........

When it comes to safe rooms, you're better off just going with solid doors and plywood under sheetrock walls anyway. New construction is so cheap and crappy these days with 24" Beams, hollow doors, and particle Board exterior walls. Feels like I can put on my lacrosse helmet from high school and run straight through the inner walls.

IMO, you're better off building new with "real" construction. Solid doors and real framing will keep someone on the other side.

As for burying storage containers, that's a terrible idea. Steel rots, and you're going to need to go thick to stop things. Reinforced concrete FTW.

A solid door will help but that is only if the door frame is strong. You need a metal door frame. Wood door frames don't hold up worth a shit. You can have a solid metal door but without a metal door frame the door can still be kicked right in

I’m in the process of applying for a gun permit and was told I need a letter from a doctor or pyschiatrist that holds a MD. Dr. Pirelli has been mentioned in other posts but won’t do because he doesn’t have a MD. Is there a doctor or psychiatrist that does this type of evaluation? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

      Hi Guys,

I found that information about New Jersey's shooting ranges was scattered (if even available) for the various public/private places we shoot at. Please lend me a hand by shooting me a PM with what range(s) you shoot at, and fill in as much of the information as you can below. You can use the blank one at the end to cut and paste into a PM (or a post on this thread) and I will update this post accordingly.

Thanks for your help, and hopefully we can create a single source of information for all the ranges in NJ.

I checked my safe and noticed that the humidity level was low (~30%). I have a Goldenrod Dehumidifier in it. Should I be turning this off during the dryer winter months?
    • By NJGF
I am getting a new safe that will have a hole pre-drilled for a power cord (for lights and a dehumidifier rod). Is there anything special that should be used to help seal the hole around the wire to help maintain the safes fire rating?
