Anyone running transition sights on their AR?

Recommended Posts

Saw these GG&G transition sights and they tweaked my interest...does anyone use them and if so whats your impression of them....Are they a viable replacement for normal fixed or folding BUIS?..I haven't tried out the transition setup so it's hard to tell if I would like it or not..

I don't, but I would get the dueck set if I were big into competition.

If you are just interested in a Back Up iron sight, I would just go the fold down route.

ETA: Part of the reason I say that is if you have the RTS on a "battle" style rifle, I would always be concerned with getting it snagged on gear.

I use this http://www.dueckdefense.com/ and I like it very much. Is the standard AR sight at 45 degrees. There's a knock off very cheap on Amazon that works the same, I have both to compare. Here's the link http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B006X9DLQM/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1373940732&sr=8-1π=AC_SX112_SY192

I haven't used the dueck ones, but I have tried out the JP short range tactical sight on other people's guns, and watched a butt load of people buy them and then dump them.

I'll start off by saying the dueck style approach is better than the short auxiliary rails  with pistol like sights a few manufacturers came out with, which is what the JP rail is (they now have a set of offsets in the dueck style).  There are several reasons for this.

1) while a pistol style sight at arms length is usable in theory, you either need a full 90 degree hold for a side rail mount, or you need something to get you to .45 degrees, so either a rail or rail mounts. Odds are regardless, you wind up with a low sight offset, which sounds good until you realize getting behind the sight like you would on a pistol is nearly impossible across a wide range of gear and body types. I have a big melon, and I was always looking down at it more than being right behind it.  The dueck setup with a2 style heights avoids a lot of this.

2) Sight radius. The sight radius on the dueck style is longer. longer is better in terms of accuracy.

3) adjustability. You introduce a host of problems with offset sights like that, without a good deal of adjustability, you are maximally susceptible to them.

What the general problems are with the concept:

1) For close up, they are not faster or more accurate than sighting down the barrel/handguard with yoru gun turned .45 degrees. At least on human sized targets.

2) They are almost never truly concentric to the bore of the gun. If you have a monolithic top rail, this is seriously reduced, but the mounting methods for picatinny rails are such that you probably can't eliminate it 100%.

3) Cant. The gun is not ergonomically set up to operate in that position. you will seldom flip over and eliminate canting 100%. This doesn't really matter up close. but..

4) IF they aren't for up close, you get to revisit 2 and 3. which means that you can dial out the mildly off axis issues for a specific range. for the canting issue, you ahve to practice the snot out of it, and start out doing that being good enough to isolate issues to canting.

5) Smashing and snagging. They will take abuse. They better be up to it and stay adjsuted where they were put.

6) price.

What they excel at totally awesomely:

1) Chilly and humid with a mounted optic and without a hard wind. Your optic will fog from the gasses your AR puts out. co-witnessed irons do you jack unless you unmount the optic. offset sights are immediately accessible with a fogged up optic.

They are a trade off. I can't say if they are worth it or not, but definitely consider them in the context of their intended use.

I was considering a pair like this for a loaner build i'm working on.. do they lay "flat" or do they have a slight pitch to them like the MBUS do? and do you normally have them up or folded?

The one thing that keeps me from buying them is the thought of having to come completely off target to flip up the sights if my optic fails or if i want to use the Iron sights.... what is your experience so far?

They fold flat. I normally have them in the up position and down when the gun is in the case.

The sights are spring loaded and will self pop up when you depress the release button. For a right hander, it is possible to depress the buttons with the index fingers of both hands without taking your eyes off target. Folding down the sights is however a two handed job.

Whatever you do, don't try the sights from Amazon. I did and ended up sending them back after the first range session. The front sight post got jammed and would not adjust so I couldn't even get them sighted in. I was going to use this on my .22 AR for matches. Instead I might do a offset mount and micro dot, still not sure.

Sorry to hear that you had bad luck with those. I have the Dueck Defense on my AR15 and I bought a set of the Amazon one for my M&P 15-22 and worked great and functionally were the same as the Dueck's with lesser quality finish.

Yesterday I visited a local store that has been around for a long time, They had nothing in stock. needless to say I asked about getting a TROY other and the owner was very uptight about it. he said I'll never sell one due to the fact that there is a federal law in the works to stop the sale and any prior sales will be confiscated! I was not happy to hear this but this store has a very bad rep. So a little help here, I looked and saw nothing about this subject on line.
