1911 Size: Gotta Ask, Full size or Commander

Which Size Do You Like Better

  1. 1. What size 1911 do you like better?

Recommended Posts

I know the topic has probably been asked many times on the forums, but In the next two days I am purchasing my first 1911 and want to gather everyone's opinion.

So, leave your opinions as to which size I should get.

Will probably be used at the range 95% of the time, maybe CCW outta state.

Full size. Three-quarters of an inch really doesn't help that much with concealability. It is the butt that's a problem and that's the same on both. So unless you are looking at a CCO configuration or a bobbed MSH, stick with the 5" gun.

John Moses Browning designed the 1911 on a 5" barrel and thats the reason its the most reliable on the full size model.

I have had a few commanders but ended up selling them for one reason or another. The commander is a little less pleasant to shoot from the increased muzzle flip. Easily manageable but somewhat annoying.

Not enough choices!  I like my Colt Officer's .45 for many reasons, and I can hit quite well with it.  I've probably had it for a couple decades by now.  It's sitting in its' Mitch Rosen Kant-Forward holster right now.  I use Wilson or Chip McCormack Officer's mags, so I get the 7th round into the mag instead of the usual 6.  In Condition #1, I've got 8 rounds of .45 Black Talon for the bump in the night.

I actually see no advantage to a Commander-sized platform.  The Officer's-sized platform is smaller both on the slide and the grip and therefore more easily concealed, doesn't "print" like a full-size and is quite comfortable for wearing while seated.

And eventually you'll want BOTH, lol!

When playin' the IDPA gun game, some guys show-up with pipsqueak 9's for BUG Matches.  I show-up with my .45 Officers.  Did fairly well the last BUG Match too!

Thanks or the comments and opinions. I have had my eye on a Ruger SR1911 for awhile. For some reason I find the Ruger very attractive looking.

I found both stocked locally at different places and went to check both out. After debate, an driving back and forth some, I went with the

Took my new full size 1911 to the range today and was very impressed. I have never shot a 1911 before, and it might have been the smoothest gun I have ever shot. Very happy with the purchase thus far.

      Hello,
I am new here and looking to sell my two hand guns (I have another post for a Glock G19 GEN5 that will have a description very similar to this post).

This post is for a Browning 22 1911 Black Label with fiber optic sights that I purchased new from Firearms Support and Storage June of 2019. I have used it a total of two times at RTSP in Union NJ and in it's lifetime it has shot only 390 rounds down range.
It comes with 2 10 round clips magazines - I have not used it since prior to covid, so I will give it the best cleaning I can before the sale.

The price is $400 plus FFL transfer fees.
If you have questions or if I can share any other photos, please let me know.
The first to post "I'll take it" wins the sale
      Thank you!

For the past couple months I've been considering a Colt Compitetion (still not sure if I'm going to go 9 or 45).
I'll be using it mostly for IDPA shooting, where I'm currently rated  in the low end of the Sharpshooter class.
So as I'm getting ready to close in on a Colt Compitetion, Colt releases the same gun in series 70 and calls it "better".
I'm reading as much as I can on the re-introduced series 70, and wondering how much of a difference the series 70 might make over a series 80 for a shooter in my classification.
      Any thoughts?
