Purchasing an NJ legal upper receiver

Hi everyone.  This is my first post and within the year purchased my first gun.  I apologize if this is addressed somewhere but I can't seem to find direction or recent posts.  I seem to be having issues finding a reasonably priced upper receiver without an A2 flash hider.  Then I started looking for a barrel with compensator without much luck.  How does everyone purchase them?  If I were to purchase a threaded barrel and compensator with existing guns, how do I not run afoul the many laws of NJ prior to pinning/silver solder it.  My assumption is you ship it to a gunsmith to affix.  Any advice would be appreciated.  I think I am missing something the forest for the trees here.

Do you have an assembled lower?  If not then you can buy whatever upper you please, and bring it to someone to make it compliant.  Other wise, you can send it directly to whoever can do the work for you.  

 

Its basically just a hunk of metal as long as there isn't a lower around to complete it.  

 

Personally, when I bought my last upper, I sent it to my mom's house in NYC.  I visited her when she received it, and on the way home I stopped of at Rahway HG and they cut the bayo lug and affixed a dynacomp.  Picked it up and gtg

That sounds good.  I ordered a blemished PSA lower and LPK(Blackhawk!??...not sure of the quality)  but will supposedlyarrive at FFL before I get an upper/barrel.  My parents would probably hold onto it...and would probably be helping me pin it with a drill press.

I don't know much about the blackhawk kit honestly but they don't carry a great rep. You may want to look into Midwestpx's lpk and keep the other one as a spare or sell. Spare lpk parts are a good idea

 

As for the lower/upper, does your ffl do compliance work? If so let him hang on to the lower for a bit while the upper comes in, have him do the work, and pick up at the same time. It shouldn't be expensive

If you can do without "the look" you can get a reasonably priced upper with nothing on the end of the barrel from several sources. IMO the AR doesn't need a compensator and most have one for "the look".

Stag Arms sells NJ compliant uppers already neutered on their website...good selection also...
