New Jersey lawmakers seek mandatory training for potential gun owners.

These bills come about because there are people somewhere petitioning their lawmakers for them.  Legislators would be more than happy to sit around and do nothing all day.  The problem is our fellow citizens are pushing for this legislation.  Some suburban mom with nothing better to do probably saw something on facebook (after taking a break from spamming me with slot-o-mania invites), or Dr. Phil, about this and started a frothing at the mouth letter writing/call in/fax/smoke signal campaign.  Its either that or MDA or one of the other astroturf organizations are sending around feelers to see what can get done.

No legislator ever had an original thought, they only do anything when there are people watching with deep enough pockets or a loud enough megaphone to get them in trouble.

In some other states, you might be correct. Here in NJ, our corrupt legislators don't need any prodding from our fellow citizens.

We have plenty of anti-gun people in the legislature that come up with these things on there own.

Contrary to popular belief Legislators dont sit around.  They are on the hook to deliver to the interests of their donors. They know their masters and are on constant prowl for survival.  How do you think the Bills introduced often have lengthy, detailed legal language ? Because they are written up WAY before anyone's time. There is a stack that continues to grow and gets updated. Depending on their master's interests, the critters put relevant things up for the law.

Another reason critters keep introducing Bills without any prompt is to look "tough" on crime, get more budget under their belt (more pork) etc.

So, NO,  "People" are not petitioning but Donors with special interests are.

This is more of a general response to the thread subject than directly to it, but its the point that in NJ law makes are chipping away, nickel and diming at anything they can.

Nothing in NJ will change for the better in the near future. As it stands this is an anti gun state period. We all know the liberal majority in Trenton will do what ever they can to further this end. With Chistie's 2016 aspirations he is at best putting more legislation at a stand still while the nation spot light may be heading his way. Historically he has been the lesser of the alternative evil, at best. What are we going to be in for when he's gone if/when a liberal dem takes his place? The only way things in NJ will change is 1) EVERY pro 2A person votes. or 2) The US Supreme Court lays out detailed guide lines of where regulation becomes infringement. The later is not very likely to happen. Take something as simple as Drake. An important decision that would have been precedent as qualification for "justifiable need" (which in itself is infringement to  person that would rather read what's written vs twisting words until they mean what they want them to). It seems political correctness brought about by a  loud mouth carry a lot of weight weather it the minority just being loud or not. Never mind the fact that it blatantly violates US law.

Just on a side bar (food for thought).......Does intent of the law (2A) mean anything?

In the 50 years following the ratification of the bill if rights, how many districts/states

Required firearm training to purchase a gun?

Required a CCW (that could be denied or not) to carry a gun in public?

Placed any restriction on what kind of firearm one could own (up to and including a cannon)? Granted, weapons have changed over the years. But was the most deadly/effective weapon of the time banned because it was such?

Kinda makes one think..... Our forefathers wrote laws in plain straight forward English without  spending volumes on there meanings..... Maybe because they thought straight forward langauge was a given, not open to interpretation? Hmmmmmmm What a F&%#'n concept!

The most devastating gun accident stories are of innocent children who find unsecured firearms of relatives,” Assemblyman Tim Eustace said in a statement obtained by the Cliffview Pilot. “This legislation educates prospective gun owners on how to keep themselves and their families safe while owning a firearm.”

Someone better inform this legislator that gun locks or lockable are "supposed" to provided with the purchase of ever handgun in New Jersey!

It is a Federal & State LAW!
