Need advice on a 5 incher

Recommended Posts

So, as the title says I am in the market for a 5 incher, 5 inch barrel that is......

Just completed a sale, and have some cash laying around, still waiting on permits, and want to see what you guys have to say..... (Just sold an M&P 40c)

I already have: glock 17, glock 23, gp100 4 inch, Colt tropper mark 3, sig p226 (9mm and 22) SR1911, xds 4.0 (carry gun) and need something new....

Though I do not compete, I might want to in the future, and I want a polymer pistol with a 5 inch barrel( fun range gun)....

I was personally thinking about getting a M&P 9 pro series (not core) , or perhaps a walther ppq in 5inch....

I've read that some of the pro series models come with some of the Apex tactical parts already installed on the trigger..... Any truth to that ?

I have thought about the G34, but the g17 barrel is already about 4.50 inches, I know the sight radius is a lot more too... Looking to stay away from another glock.

You could always go with a G34. Interchangeable magazines with the 17 and any open ended holsters will also fit.

No.... not true....

and judging by your current list.... You will not like the M&P trigger. I have had   plenty of them, and the trigger was just not for me....

I now own a Glock 19

I have held the "regular" PPQ... Feels great....

Would want to hold the PPQ in 5 to see if it still feels balanced.....

A lot of the controls on the PPQ seem awkward to me....

I would say a g34 or ppq 5"

What controls? The 5" has the button mag release and then there's only the slide release. Do you slingshot?

I hated the stock trigger on my m&p40 c... Had the apex FSS trigger kit installed .....

I heard the stock pro series had "a lot" better trigger trigger than others

I would prefer the m2 to m1, but the slide stop seemed abnormally large. The integral take down levers seemed strange too.

As "Hickok" says, I like my pistols "dehorned"

Again, I held on at the store, never shot one.

Not true - the trigger is a bit better than the regular trigger... I would still spring to upgrade it.  Or if you feel DIY'y, then look to the Burwell trigger job.  I have it on my 9L and I prefer it over other M&P triggers I've tried with the APEX DCAEK.

Personally I like the paddles but that's another discussion. I like how the slide stop is elongated but still not sticking out as to catch on something. Ambi also.

Take down levers are very simple, once pistol is decocked, pull down on both sides and upper is released.

Have you ever held the 5 inch version... I wonder if it feels a balanced?

Most 5 inch pistols have metal removed from the slide to reduce weight....

I have but not for a whole lot of time. I definitely encourage you to test drive it If possible. The 5" does have a ported slide.

Does the competition spring kit make much of a difference?

IF you had the M&P with the FSS Trigger..... then nothing less will be good for you..... The Pro trigger is just a tick better then the stock trigger, and does not even compare to the DCAEK trigger.....

So if you go for a 5" M&P, just figure into the cost a FSS Trigger Kit.....  you are going to want it....
