Henry lever-action .22

Recommended Posts

I was in the local LGS (how many posts start like that?) and saw a neat little rifle - a Henry lever-action .22 with octagon barrel and a scope.  I just liked the look and feel of it, so bought it.  I was surprised at the finish on the lumber, seems like a nice quality piece, especially at the price - $300 including NICS.  Went out to the range and the thing is a tack driver as expected.  Any mods recommended for it?

I almost bought a Henry but a 1971 Marlin 39D in near mint condition begged me to buy it while I was shopping around.  The thing I love best about Henry rifles is that they are made right here in NJ.  I have to do the factory tour one of these days.  Congrats on your cowboy gun. Like Krdshrk said, peep sights are a popular upgrade.

Get rid of that scope, get a set of skinner sights. http://www.skinnersights.com/henry_rifles_18.html

How do those sights work with glasses?  I have a hard time aiming with the stock iron sights with my Henry Golden Boy because of my glasses/prescription/astigmatism.

Funny to see this thread I was just thinking last night about the sites on my new Henry steel 357 I picked up last week but haven't shot it yet but I'm sure I'll be looking for a sight upgrade soon. Probably go for some kind of peep set up a scope looks kind of weird to me on a lever gun.

Not necessarily.  My 39D came with an older 28mm fixed power 4x scope, it did not look terrible.  I think a modern 1" scope with a large objective bell would look terrible but the classic thin scope was tolerable. I took it off because I want to shoot with open sights but would not hesitate to put it back on

Aperture size doesn't really mean anything to me if I can't see the front sight due to my glasses... I might have to go with a scope mount/scope... Meh..

Also - if you don't have one of these yet, get one!  Makes loading a snap!

Just picked up a Steel Boy in 357. It was made at their Rice Lake, WI factory. I found out, when I called Henry for info on something else, that all of their blued steel receiver rifles are now made at that facility. The subject of factory tours came up and according to them, they don't off them. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news on that one.
