Emissions inspection with CEL on

Recommended Posts

Very nice! I have a soft spot for them. When I was doing autobody I did a complete restoration of a 63 300SL for my boss. He used to let me take my girlfriend out to dinner on Friday nights with it.

Regarding the monitors' state of readiness, it's all about drive cycles. However the manufacturer declared it in the vehicle's computer is how long it'll take. Usually it's 2-3 drive cycles, and not always dependant upon miles driven.

i have a specific 12 mile route i drive customers cars in which i can set the monitors 95% of the time. i used to just do it on the chassis dyno.....but i left its computer turned on one night. thunderstorm....no more computer.......ggrr

I have a 2004 Hyundai Accent. 2 years ago I had the check engine light on due to P0442 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak).

We cleared out the code and I bought a new gas cap figuring that was the issue. I drove about 200-250 mi. to "ready" all the sensors and took it to inspection. I passed and all was good that day in August of 2014. 40 miles later the light came on again, had it checked and it was the same thing, so it may not have been the gas cap (unless I bought the wrong or just a shitty one).

I said F' it cause it's passed now and I don't have to go back for two years.

Well...it's two years later so it's inspection time and the same code keeps popping up. I was hoping to do what I got lucky and did last time and clear it/drive around and take it to inspection after about 200 miles. I got to 115 mi. and it came back on today.

Few questions for those who know. With the new inspection rules put in place this year will the evap code fail me automatically? Should I try another fuel cap? Should I clear it, and time it right and take it at like 80-100 mi. and hope things like the O2 sensor and stuff like that are ready to be checked?

Any help or if you need more info let me know!

If you've got a CEL on then you'll fail. If the CEL isn't on but you have a code that would pop the CEL then you'll likely fail.

My wife went to Denville Hyundai and got a factory gas cap, Hackettstown wouldn't have one in till sometime next week. We will see if the damn light stays off this time. I should know by mid next week.

If you put a new gas cap on then clear the code and see if it comes back. Most likely it's the vent or purge valve or a hole in a vapor hose. Smoke the system if you can. Do you smell gas while in the car?

Nope, no gas smell. Code is clear, we'll see how it goes. I really don't wanna go through the whole process of figuring it out on a car I paid $500 for. Let's hope this does it, I really bought a POS gas cap 2 years ago and I can tell the difference screwing this new one on and off.

any codes stored at all will fail you. on an 04, you need all of the i/m monitors to be set. 2 years ago, you could have 2 showing not ready, as long as the catalyst and 02 monitors were set. now, anything newer than 01 has to have ALL i/m monitors set.

small leak is usually a gas cap, or a worn/rotted evap hose. you need to check all the evap hoses, the evap and purge solenoids, and valves.

I told my wife if I fail, I'm selling this and buying a pickup that is 20yrs old so inspection can go kick rocks! LOL

Does anyone have a definitive answer whether an OBDI (not OBDII) car can be inspected with the CEL on or is the light on a cause for automatic rejection or a refusal to inspect? The vehicle in question is a '93 Camry V6.

Any vehicle in NJ 95 or older is exempt from NJ inspection, unless it's registered commercial.

However, you might get fined for driving a truck that's 6000 lbs empty that's only registered for 5000 lbs.

It's a $175 fine per every 100 lbs over weight you are above your registered GVWR from the DOT. But if you're not registered commercial, I wouldn't sweat it on a passenger registered pick up. No one is scaling you on the side of the road.

Of course the one code I'm actually waiting on is the only one that hasn't reset yet LOL. Anyone that uses the Torque app know what Not avail actually means in this case? Does it mean my car doesn't have/require that type of sensor?

not available means just that. that vehicles system doesn't monitor those systems, thus.......n/a

evap is usually one of the hardest most finniky monitors to get to set.

Thanks man, I appreciate the response! Well before I replace the cap it triggered the CEL at 115 miles. I've driven 108 so far LMAO so I guess I'll see tomorrow. Maybe.

175 miles and the stupid evap code still shows incomplete. I'm off work until Labor Day so the only place I'm driving is to and from stores that are 3-5 miles from me.

I looked at pending and it said none were available. I'll check it again tomorrow.

FML, I'm never gonna be along those types of specifications while I'm on staycation. I'll kick my car tomorrow and tell it to go fuck itself. I'll also put $5 of gas in it and drive in circles for a half hour...

So finally an update. I put a OEM gas cap in and eventually the same code triggered. From what I've read you have to do some sort of smoke test to see where the evap leak is coming from. I figured I would just say screw it and try to get it through inspection or fail before I start going through all of that. This is, mind you, a car I only paid $500 for about 3 years ago so as my FIL would put it "It don't owe you shit". I cleared the codes Friday night, checked the sensors last night and all were ready except the evap code. Took it to inspection today with my wife and prayed the CEL didn't come on during the drive there.

My not so exciting video through inspection. They made me get out and walk down to the end and my wife had to stay in the car with the one guy. Unfortunately the funny part of my wife's and his exchange in the car was while the car was off so I idn't capture it, but the two inspection workers did have a funny convo.

Anyway, somehow I passed and I'm good for another 2 years.

Also...if you go to Randolph inspection, make sure to go through the gate and get a ticket...don't drive around the gate like I did LMAO
