HELP! Mosin issue -- light primer strikes

Recommended Posts

ok guys, update for you, and I'm rather confused.

I went to the range today with the Mosin. Loaded the TulAmmo (new ammo) first, and had a light primer strike.

So, I took @johnnyB 's advice and set the firing pin deeper for both the TulAmmo and Yugo surplus. I went one rotation. Both ammo is good to go. She went boom .... but not all the time!

Here's the weird part. probably 90% of the time I'd get a light strike on both the TulAmmo and Surplus, but then I'd cock it again (not cycle the bolt, just pulled back on the cocking piece) and then it would fire.

What the hell could that be?

For the hell of it, I have ordered a heavier spring and new firing pin.

That means you are 1/4 to 1/2 turn away from the correct firing pin position for that screwy ammo. Whatever you do, enjoy the ammo with the deep set primers but do NOT use any other ammo

with the pin forward like that. My suggestion was only to use up that ammo rather than destroy it.

Good move on replacing the spring and pin, just start at "GO" with the new setup.

I would think the pin is okay, but the spring was probably the culprit. I'm too lazy to read, but I'm assuming you are using the gauge on the screwdriver tool.

I've noticed that mosin springs can vary wildly. The OE spring in my garden variety Izhevsk felt like the coil spring in my F150, and a new old stock spring from Sarco felt like a normal rifle. The sarco spring was covered in cosmo, I originally planned on cutting it.

HAHAH! Felt like the coil in your F150! That's great!

Yea, it was a newer spring but I ordered Rock Solid's spring with extra horsepower ... we'll see if that makes a difference. If not, then I'm going to shoot up the surplus I have with the firing pin set deeper and then get rid of this baby.
