New guy and girl from OC

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

My wife and I recently applied for our FIDs and P2P permits(2 each) about a month ago and from what I was told by the clerk, shouldn't expect them before Valentine's Day...

We will be taking a basic pistol course in the next month or two and are eagerly awaiting purchasing our first handguns.

My wife has never fired a handgun but can't wait to start, I have range fired a few of my father's guns with him(ruger MKII, Mauser 9mm Luger reissue and 38 revolver), he's a WWII vet and still loves to shoot.

My wife and I will be adopting the "try before buy" philosophy so we'll feel as comfortable shooting as well as holding them...go figure.

The front runners for my wife are the Ruger SR22, Beretta 92fs inox(heavy but she loves the feel and says the gun looks sexy).

For me, I love the H&K VP9, M&P shield 9mm and several others.

I'm also looking at getting an entry level Ar15, maybe a DPMS Oracle??

Any thoughts, suggestions or comment are always appreciated.

Anyway, hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

Welcome to the forum.

For basic entry level AR's have a look at Ruger's AR-556 and the S&W M&P Sport.  Both basic and proven reliable.  If you will be shooting mainly 55gr and 62gr milsurp I'd go with the M&P with a 1:9 twist.  If you plan to shoot 55gr and heavier bullets, up to 75gr then I'd go with Ruger's AR-556 with a 1:8 twist.

Where did you hear about njgf?

Welcome to the forums.

As your wife has never fired a gun before you may want to consider at least on revolver.  Very simple to use and understand.  If home defense / security is one of your concerns then keep it as simple as possible.  Look at full size 357s and have her run 38s through it.  Very little recoil.  Short of a 22 one of the best ways to introduce new shooters to firearms.

Try holding the CZ 75-B and CZ P01.  Many consider CZs as having some of the best ergonomics around.  You may have never heard of CZ before but outside of the US it is one of the most copied styles of handguns.  They are also tack drivers!

As far as ARs, you can generally build a lower receiver and purchase a full upper for less than buying a complete rifle.  The lower is very simple to build and there are plently of videos to on Youtube to walk you through it step by step.

Again welcome.  If you have any questions, don't hestitate to ask.

P.S. - Appetite For Destruction is one of my favorite albums ever.

Welcome!

For first guns I second the SR22, I have one and the wife and kids love it.  As others have stated also get a heavy wheel gun, I have a SW 686 that the wife and kids also love.

If you ever want to try them out I can guest you into CJRPC and we can shoot away!

Welcome!

Check out CZ75 or any of its clone like Baby Eagle. Try a revolver too.

As for the SR22 - I was considering it, but heard from an FFL that its quality is not as it used to be. Still considering...

No issues with my wife's SR22 yet. Had it about a year, already have about 3500 rounds through it.

If she like the size and feel of the 92 but also wants to start with a .22lr, go find an M9 22LR. having both it and and a Ruger SR22 (which I do love to shoot,) I can hands down say the M9 22LR is the full sized .22 i've been looking for. also doesn't hurt that when she wants to step up to a 9mm, the 92FS/M9 are the same manual of arms.
