Extreme FID wait time need advice and assistance

Recommended Posts

I hate to be of no help, but there really isnt much that can be done, it's NJ. My original FID took 11 months. My latest round of P2P's took 10 1/2 months. Pissed me off to no end. Every time I called i was spoken to like a POS. I felt better about my wait when I found out my buddy waited 4 1/2 months for his FID and 2 P2P's. He was all bragging that the day he turned his paperwork in he got a call from the The Troopers informing him that they completed their end and sent the paperwork up to Trenton. He was rubbing it in my face that his shit would be done fast.........Fast was 4 1/2 months. Did I forget to mention he is a 20 year veteran of a local PD. Yes! It took a current LEO 4 1/2 months........KEEP VOTING LIBERAL AND WE WILL KEEP GIVING AWAY RIGHTS!

Your story sounds all too familiar, but I had a much different experience after I called Trenton.

I live in Shamong and had to go through the Red Lion SP barracks myself with very similar results. I turned my application in late March of 2015 for an FID and PtP. Both were completed on August 6th, but Red Lion never called me to tell me it was ready. After calling them several times and being told, "If we haven't called you, it isn't ready.", I decided to pay them a visit in October. The trooper behind the desk checked their filing cabinet and pulled out my FID/PtP. It wasn't until then that I realized it had come in, but I never got a call. Of course now they had eaten up two of the three months the permit is valid for.

I got busy and had to go out of town on a military trip, so I wound up going back there the day the PtP expired to get it extended. NEVER DO THIS WITH THE NJSP!! They take the permit and send it back to Trenton for extension! Friends of mine had told me they walked right into their local PD's and had their permits signed and extended right there, but the SP send it back to Trenton. Needless to say two and a half months go by with no permit and I decided to pay them a visit again in late January. No permit. So I left and called Trenton. After speaking with the lady and explaining my situation (I assume it is the same one you spoke to), she seemed sympathetic. She said that she'd have it extended and would have it mailed right to my house. 3 days later it was in my mailbox. To my surprise, she had it extended into April, even though it was originally issued in August!

BTW, I have a buddy who got his FID and PtP in a week and a half in Pemberton.

Go to West Trenton, and tell the gate guard you are picking up paperwork at the Firearms Unit. He will tell you where they are. You will get satisfaction by showing up in person. Have your specific dates and names ready.

8 months isn't normal in NJ? It is ridiculous I waited almost 7 months for my FID and initial PTP. I think I'm on 4 months now waiting for new PTPs have called local PD and emailed. Got no response. Best bet show up in person.

It is at least good to hear that I am not the only one having this problem. I have attempted to be as patient as possible, but this has really pissed me off and made me lose a lot of respect for the NJSP.

Never even saw this link I plan on using that first "Professional Standards" option in the VERY near future if nothing else will work.

In the mean time I am going to go back to the Red Lion barracks and make another request in person. This is not really the route I wanted to take but they have left me no other choice. I didn't want to become a nuisance or a pest to my local PD and have them going, "not this guy again..." every time I walk through the door. I am afraid they will try to throw out my applications in the future, and is this how it is going to be every time I want to purchase a new handgun?! 8 months?! I don't know what I will be doing in a months time, let alone the majority of a year, if I will still even be interested in making an intended purchase.

Get in there and speak up for yourself!

I have kept a date log of each time I've applied. Keep the pressure.

Call and ask about permits, and see what she does haha, you will be transferred before you can even get a word in.

Just called.

I was able to complete my entire question/statement before she transferred me. Only because my very last word was FID. She said hold on: Then transferred, rang twice then voice mail "Mike Cassy" ..... I had nothing to say so I hung up....

You are not the only one having problems with the wait at the Red Lion State Police barracks.  I live in Shamong, I am going on 4 months for a change of address. My fiance waited 6 months for her initial FID and 7 months for a round of P2P's. Expect the P2P's to be at least 3 weeks old when you pick them up. All you ever hear when you inquire is "blame Christie" and "don't call us we'll call you". I wrote a letter to Christie yesterday through his website as some here have suggested. I'm sure it will do no good at all but who knows.

She will transfer you to this line each and every time, it never is answered. NEVER.  I have called probably 10+ times, they are most likely sick of getting calls about FIDs and they purposely transfer you to a line that is never answered, and voicemails are never returned.

I am going in person today to Red Lion barracks, it should be a shit show.....Will post results later.

Good luck!  We're all counting on you. :)

What this seems like is not a case of incompetence or backups in the system due to high volume. It seems like disgruntled State Police who don't like their Republican governor because he's not given them the pensions/benefits they believe they deserve.

I'm sure they group all of us gun toting people as Republicans. I recall a snide remark about Christie when I was there also. Christie really has nothing to do with the process. Like I said, I've got a friend who got his FID and PtP in about two weeks from the PD in Pemberton so it *can* be done. I honestly don't know how Pemberton could process a mental health records check in two weeks, but they did.

There was one trooper at Red Lion who I could tell was getting sick of me being in there. I spent about 30 min at that window in military uniform one day firing questions at him about why I couldn't apply for a carry permit after he laughed at me for wanting to try.

I sent an email to the Governors office on Tuesday letting them know that my wait for my change of address was over 90 days. I received a reply Wednesday saying that it was being forwarded to the Attorney General. I am hoping that my FID wont be misplaced because I am stirring the pot. Here's the link I used http://www.state.nj.us/governor/contact/

      Hello all,
Some opinions please.  I am a long time NJ resident and also a resident in SC.  I spend 8 months out of the year in NJ out of necessity.  When I leave NJ I carry everywhere as I have multiple CWP's.  I have purchased many pistols legally in NJ over the years.
I was thinking about getting some new permits to pee...(my term for the Pistol Permit) but with all the BS that had been going on I was thinking about refraining.
I also have completed all the NJ CWP permit applications, but I am not sure I am actually going to apply.  I don't need to put up with the NJ BS.  To me it's insulting.  Plus with all the restrictions coming and being tied up in the courts for probably years, it may be just a futile exercise.   I would rather just leave when my house is build in SC and buy it there.  Once I switch my license to SC, its cash and carry for me.
I have the old, non-expiring FID.  What I do not want to happen is if I go apply for new permits to pee, that my FID gets converted to an expiring one and then I have to pay a renewal fee.
I did read the new regs and it looks like they are grandfathering old FID folks to the non expiring one but this is NJ...what is written in law is usually ignored by the class warfare system we have here and the horrible mentality and attitude of some of these LEO's and NJSP officers that think their personal bias is important and the sneers you get when you go pay the $2.
      Am I being paranoid?

I just got my FID for long guns, although I don't know anything about guns or ammo. What is a good gun to get my hands on that will help me learn more but won't break the bank, at the same time being ideal at home defense?

      Hello,
I have two questions regarding FID application. So I have seen three psychiatrists for ADD, and while I know this is not a disqualifying factor, I do not know the exact dates or years that I attended, and mind you that I am currently 20 and attended from ages around 7 to 17 or 18. This is a problem because the application asks this, and then asks for the names and dates of such occurences. Is it okay if I state that I do not know the dates of such occurences, or if I give the date estimations of which (I do know the names)?
My second question is regarding references. I do not know any police officers well enough to be able to ask them to use them for my FID, so will two friends that I grew up with do just fine? Thank you.

After reading so many references to the new FARS application and registration system, I stopped by my local PD to check it out. I believe it’s worth mentioning that not all PD’s are currently using the new system. So, before paying any fee’s or signing on to FARS you should check which system your PD is using.
Sorry if this info is redundant to another post, again thought it was worth noting as all fees are non-refundable
Firearms Application & Registration System (FARS)
The State of New Jersey is now accepting firearms applications for Firearms Purchaser Identification Cards and Pistol Purchase Permits electronically.
The following Web site will allow an applicant to apply for Initial and Duplicate Firearms Purchaser Identification Cards and Permits to Purchase a Handgun:
      https://njportal.com/NJSP/FARS
If you reside in a New Jersey State Police covered area and are certain which NJSP Station you are applying through, utilize the following ORI #’s to apply.  If you are not certain, contact the NJSP station to obtain the proper ORI before applying.  All fees are non-refundable.
