Chassis Options - Masterpiece Arms

Recommended Posts

Been checking out chassis options for a Remington 700 SA.

Masterpiece Arms looks interesting.

$875 for the non-folding. $1025 for folding.  5 to 9 week lead time.

Anyone ever get a look at one of these in person?  One thing I might do to it if I had one was glue some sort of leather over the cheek riser.

It's a supposedly very nice chassis.  That said, I don't own one nor have i handled one.

I have a McRee's.  If you ever find yourself up this way, drop me a PM and you can take a look at it.  I have a PRS stock on it.  I'm very happy with it.

I also have an MDT/LSS with a Minimalist stock on it.  I like it for it's intended purpose.

Honestly, from what I've seen, they all work well.  It comes down to aesthetics.  Kinda like AR lowers where they all do the same thing, but what roll mark do you want on it.  That's chassis systems.  They all get the job done.  Some are heavy, some light but they all do the same thing, hold your action in a place, consistently, so you can make a good shot.  Not much to it.

Good luck in the search.

Kevin, if you go with the McRee, realize the original stock is a pain to adjust the cheek rest. Need to loosen Allen screws on each side to raise to correct height.

I wish they had the PRS when I got mine.

Also, I have the folder which helps when cleaning. Don't know about the PRS, but with mine, if I didn't have the folder, I'd have to lower the cheekrest and reset it every time to run a rod down the barrel.

Just something to think about.

Thanks NJ.

So that thumb-wheel adjustable rear is a Mag-Pul PRS. I definitely like that better than the allen key cheek rest. Similar to the MPA-BA stock. I'll need to figure out a way to index it. My daughter and son will be shooting it some of the time. I'll probably just notch it somewhere so I know where my positions are at.

Folding rear was my first choice.

Topher, that's a nice setup you've got there.

Unless I find something significantly better in this price range.. this will probably be what I go with. What I'll probably spend the most time on is .......which color..... It's important ya know.....

Thnx again guys.

I love my folder and I love my PRS. I happened into one used which helped. I also grabbed a stock on sale, got lucky with the timing.

Thanks for the kind words. It's a great rifle that I'm learning to shoot ok.

I run a McRee chassis w/folder too.  It meets my needs, although its a bit on the heavy side.  Then again, I'm not running across the course with it.  If I were looking for something a bit lighter, I might go with a KRG X-Ray.

IMO, the McRee is a great value in chassis.  It's built like a tank and mounts the action very well (the main reason for any chassis).

This is mine:

Nice Eric.  thnx.

The MPA chassis is a little over 5 lbs.  Wondering what the actual weight of the McRee is?

I forget the exact weight but iirc, the G5 folder was around 5.5lbs.  This is compared with a Manners mini chassis stock that is around 4.25 lbs and the KRG X Ray, which is abut 3.3 lbs.

Also, McRee seems to have a new model G10 folder, which is around 4lbs.

I only dream about precision rifles and like to read articles and reviews. Anyone have opinions on the XLR Element? Weighs in under 4lb with butt stock, before you add accessories like the folding mechanism. Seems to have some nice features at a reasonable price.

Again, they get great reviews.

That said, I haven't handled one.

Saw some positive reviews of the XLR as well.  Seems like a nice chassis.  Most everything I've checked out online looks like a decent choice.  Some subtle differences in each.  McRee and MPA are at the top of my list.  McRee is probably more likely due to less wait time.  In G7-PRS (buyer provided aftermarket butt stock) folder and their tactical front end, it's $577 plus a Mag-Pul Stock that lists for $225.  Have it all in a week in the color go your choice.  Hard to beat.

Dream in pieces....

I bought a Remington 700 SPS.  Lots of other, maybe even better starter choices... $700.

Add a basic Leupold Scope... or other of your choice.  $350 for a Mark AR 40mm 3-9x Mil Dot.  Remarkable scope for the price.

Now at least you're shooting.....

Add your favorite chassis.   $850

Use the barrel until you need a new one.  $500.

Spread it all out.... and don't think too much about the cost of ammo....

The MPA is pretty awesome. I've had a Rock Solid Chassis (meh), X-Ray (felt cheap), AW AICS (I love everything AI), Legacy/pre-2014 AX AICS (my favorite chassis), played with a McRee and my buddy currently has a folding MPA that I've played with and shot. IMHO the MPA blows the McRee out of the water aesthetically and overall in function/features. The MPA is designed from the ground up to perform as a race chassis for the PRS format. The quick change barrier stop is really neat and the fact that it comes with a forward NVG rail is awesome. I prefer a fixed stock for cost savings and extra rigidity, but I find that a folder makes my life easier for cleaning and travel. The cheek riser comes with a neoprene cover and the rest of the fit and finish is top notch. When I do another build it will definitely be a Bighorn TL2 in a MPA chassis.

Yes, I saw the G10.  Top of my list I think.

Thanks for the input and sorry for the diversion off topic.

For me it's less about money as it is about the time. With the nearest range with more than 100 yards being well over an hour drive for me, it eats up the better part of a day just to get out. With a crazy work schedule and a young family I just don't seem to make the time.

Will probably continue to dream a little more, but it will happen. I should probably try to get out to a local match or go with someone willing to show me the ropes before diving in head first.

I kinda am a sucky shooter but would love to have you put some time in behind my rifle if you like.  I don't have any problem letting others shoot it.  Just be warned, the trigger inspires a bit of "WOW" most times.  PM me if you're interested.

One glitch, I shoot on Monday mornings most of the time.  Saturdays I work and Sundays I spend with the wife/family.
