SuRrEaLNJ 294 Posted May 20, 2016 I just had a couple of my late grandfathers firearms passed down to me. One of wich is a JC Higgins Model 20. From the 583.54 number ive been able to gather that it was manufactured by Hi Standard for Sears circa 1948. The powerpac has the long range choke in it. I wanted to consult the brain trust here and see if anyone have any experience or knowledge with this gun, and if so what can you tell me about them? Old School 611 Posted May 20, 2016 Does this have the choke tubes that screw in from the muzzle? If so...Be careful, modern wad cups may build up on the tube.
SuRrEaLNJ 294 Posted May 20, 2016 Yes, it does
JohnnyB 4,322 Posted May 22, 2016 Old School is right. They used to use paper wads and the plastic ones used today may leave shreds in the barrel. Just check it every so often for any obstructions.
SuRrEaLNJ 294 Posted May 25, 2016 Good to know, I'm not a fan of exploding
Old School 611 Posted May 25, 2016 You see there is a gap between the barrel and the trailing edge of the screw in choke tube. The "cup wad" expands when traveling past that gap and stacks up on the outside of the tube. Not good! Old School is right. They used to use paper wads and the plastic ones used today may leave shreds in the barrel. Just check it every so often for any obstructions.
