Lalo 13 Posted May 27, 2016 So I'm going to be moving into a new house soon and I'm thinking of how I can setup my office. That room for the office is plenty big so I want it to double as my "gun" room so I'm looking for ideas on what to get for a workbench. Since this room is going to be off the main living room visible by visitors and potential customers and not in a basement or garage, I want the workbench to look somewhat decent but still be functional. I work in IT so that room is going to be setup with monitors in different locations, I'll probably put up a TV on the wall, there will be boxes of routers, switches and other networking equipment I have to configure so it'll probably look more like a "tech" room. I currently have a black Stack-on gun cabinet so I was looking for something that could match that finish. I currently have a Kobalt 45" workbench which I use in the garage which works really well for my needs and was thinking of picking up another one to keep in the office/gun room. I'm not reloading now and honestly not planning on it, but I do like to have plenty of space to take things apart and want it to be stable and strong. What do you suggest? Krdshrk 3,877 Posted May 27, 2016 Get a Drafting table? That would kinda look along the same feel as the IT gear...
rightisright 3 Posted May 27, 2016 I have a similar set up. My office is also my gun room. I have a 6' stainless steel work table with LED track lighting overhead for working on the guns. Here is the table (it's discontinued unfortunately): http://www.bhg.com/shop/husky-workbenches-and-workbench-accessories-husky-work-benches-6-ft-stainless-steel-top-workbench-72wb01ss-thd-pb5fe509b729baca5e55c19ec81a698ab.html
Lambo2936 297 Posted May 27, 2016 I have two that look like this in my parents garage. Still in the boxes, but the boxes are beat to shit. Can open the two up and make one decent one out of em, i know one of the tops was damaged, not sure about the other. Will be much cheaper than retail, too..They are brand new, just damaged-in-transit units.http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-Stack-On-4-5-ft-Workbench-with-Steel-Wrapped-Work-Area-and-Additional-Storage-Husky-542/100135138

You may want to upgrade to the SS version for the wood bench instead of MDF. Though MDF has worked just fine so far Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
Lalo 13 Posted May 28, 2016 Thanks for the suggestions so far. Drafting table would look nice and would give me plenty of space, but I'm not sure how it would stand to some moderate weight or the occasional banging when fi of stripping guns or building ARs. The wooden benches I'll have to look into some more. They look relatively inexpensive and can customize them to my liking. I would have to add some peg board and shelves and maybe some paint or stain but that's all doable. I'm still considering getting a second Kobalt bench though. Seems like the easiest/fastest way to get something setup that looks decent. It already has the pegboard, drawers and light and its sturdy enough to withstand the hammering involved in removal my a gas block from an AR barrel. JackDaWack 2,895 Posted May 28, 2016 Not a huge fan of the metal tables, you can save some major coin building a heavy wood bench.. You will appreciate it much more if you need to attach a vice and bang something, as it absorbs much of the shock.

It should hold the weight if you have everything tightened down enough. I used to have one as a computer desk back in HS/College. Similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/Alvin-Opal-Table-White-Base/dp/B000HEOH6M/ref=sr_1_62?s=furniture&ie=UTF8&qid=1464454153&sr=1-62 It held a 19" CRT monitor and tower, speakers, etc.
siderman 1,137 Posted May 29, 2016 If you want to be a little more discreet in the public area of your house maybe one of those big roll top desks can be fitted out to your needs. Lots of drawers and just pull down the cover to hide the workbench. plenty on Craigslist to choose from, maybe even in the free section.
