SmittyMHS 603 Posted July 6, 2016 I found a gun I was looking for on Armslist. Guy said he would ship it to local FFl but wanted me to send him a money order 1st. Hmmm. I was born at nite. Just not last nite. So I asked him if he had a PP account. Said yes but "Ya know they wont do firearm transactions". I told him we could do a Goods and Services payment. He would have the funds in his PP account but couldn't access it till I got the gun. He balked at that and wanted to do a Friends and Family so he would get the funds right away. Good bad or indifferent I walked. So, I know PP doesn't want to fund firearm transactions but is there any other "safe" way to do these exchanges? junkmanted 54 Posted July 6, 2016 if you do the friends and family you will have no recourse if item never comes. Arms list should be face to face only
Blake 50 Posted July 6, 2016 Agreed, face to face on armslist deals. Not uncommon to request a money order as payment on gunbroker or other sites where feedback is tracked though. Alternatively ask to use a credit card as payment and just claim a fraudulent transaction if it doesn't show up.
mikeyjones 88 Posted July 6, 2016 Still have recourse if you do F&F. Claim a fraudulent transaction or chargeback w/ cc.
My1stGlock 144 Posted July 6, 2016 He would have to disclose it was a firearm purchase as they usually investigate and ask for the story from both parties and it goes sideways even more.....just saying....
Rob0115 1,105 Posted July 6, 2016 Most of arms list is scams. I was selling two guns recently that ended up,on arms list and almost spooked my ARFCOM buyer away. Don't buy anything there that isn't f2f.
PK90 3,569 Posted July 6, 2016 You have a better chance recovering your money by using a USPS Money Order than Paypal. Sent from an undisclosed location via Tapatalk.

JohnnyB 4,289 Posted July 6, 2016 As stated earlier. Cash with a face to face transaction is the only way to go!
SmittyMHS 603 Posted July 6, 2016 As stated earlier. Cash with a face to face transaction is the only way to go! Hard to do with some buys. Only one I found around here got away. I would much rather F2F
67gtonut 847 Posted July 6, 2016 I wouldn't touch Armslist....... IMHO Not worth the risk...

Lambo2936 297 Posted July 6, 2016 I hop on armslist and then search by state. If someone apparently from NJ wont meet ftf, its a scam.

I've gotten a couple of good deals off Armslist. The scammers are usually easy to pick out. I would never buy a used gun based on pics alone anyway, so F2F is mandatory for me. I've had nothing but good luck w/ PayPal and ArmsList. We had one incident where UPS screwed up, and in two other situations I decided not to go through with the transaction because the seller seemed fishy. Other than that I'm 100% happy. SmittyMHS 603 Posted July 6, 2016 what are you looking for Beretta CX4 9mm w/ 92 mag- used. Don't want a new one. If they were even available. ;(
Lambo2936 297 Posted July 6, 2016 Paypal sucks from a sellers POV as well. Currently have a transaction being disputed. Guy bought a tool on ebay OVER 3.5 months ago. Just opened a claim that it doesnt work. Reason "internal damage". Guy probably dropped it off a roof doing a job. People suck.. i hate selling online. Ebay and amazon dont let you dispute after that long. Paypal will allow returns for any reason up to a year. No restocking fees, full refund.... wish i could sue them. DirtyDigz 1,793 Posted July 6, 2016 Really?? I'll have to look into that then. Yep. Banks don't give a shite when someone doesn't deliver for something paid for via bank money order, or when someone forges a bank money order. The USPS has the postal police, who carry guns and actually investigate small cases involving USPS Money Orders. They take interstate fraud seriously. I believe you can get refunds (not quickly) for money orders that are fraudulently cashed.

bhunted 887 Posted July 29, 2016 Curious: What kind of store? What did you sell? How did you collect payment? Was it stand-alone or through some portal? All online: Store 1: Unique motorcycle equipment 2: Cookout and BBQ stuff 3: Nautical things like to scale lighthouses, tallest was 20ft), and other decor. These were my main stores bringing in the most profit. I had no distributors so no middle man. All sales were made contracted with the owners of all products and directly through them. Met a lot of fantastic biz owners. The few that weren't were done via their reps. Payments went through credit cards with a merchant account via gateway and Paypal on occasion. Didn't like PP because their fees somewhat sucked. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If you felt uncomfortable it was best to walk away, but from a sellers perspective taking a Paypal G&S would have been very risky. The fees aside, Paypal is very buyer biased. (If there's a problem) At best they'll freeze the seller's account and try to force the seller to accept a return and refund the buyer (but still pay all the fees), even if "no returns" was stated in the terms of sale. If it comes to light that the transaction was for a firearm, the seller's Paypal account would be permanently suspended. If I was selling a firearm, I don't think I'd be willing to accept a G&S payment either. Edited July 31, 2016 by Cereza
bhunted 887 Posted July 30, 2016 Very interesting. Are you still in the business? Do you have a website? Nope. After the economy took a crap and all the big box stores started selling what I was, I couldn't compete anymore. Pist me off too because I really enjoyed it and it helped pay for my hobbies. I kind of like the peace and quiet around here not having to be on phones non stop. The way I created contacts is a lengthy process. Took a couple years to build that type of relationship. I'd have to start from scratch and find products that are not every where, in every store and every catalog. Not as easy as you may think.
