GFHR #267 Do you know what to do when you are stopped by police?

Recommended Posts

Thanks Ant! My wife's consistent nagging must have made me miss it.

I hear both sides of the argument. One says to plead the 5th of just refuse to answer any questions which to me would piss the cop off and ask for trouble.

The other is, I drive an expensive car and am obviously not a bum by my dress and demeanor. Therefore I have always been friendly and forthcoming  and have never gotten a ticket

let alone a request to search my vehicle.

by the way. Even though NH has not updated their form, a few guys here have applied for their NH non res. and got them with copies of their Fl or UT non res CCWs. Not one who sent a non res from any state has yet to be denied.

At least one guy sent in his NH app with only a NJ FID. He is experiencing a delay so we wait to hear! I can tell you for sure that you are golden if you have any valid non res CCW to apply now for NH! No need to wait.

There's two sides to this argument, too. The first is that profiling is a stark reality that isn't going anywhere, and to ignore its existence is to bury one's head in the sand. The other is that your fundamental rights aren't dependent on what you decide to wear that day.

It's worth considering the next time you decide to head out to the range after a rough day of painting the house.

Good points! I am not as well dressed when going to the range but even for that I tend to over dress! I am Caucasian and have a very good command of the English language. So much for my being profiled!

I have never been stopped with a gun in my car either. The what to do if you get stopped segment is at the 58 minute mark in the broadcast and goes for 2 minutes.

Ant makes a great point.

Open all windows.

Turn off your car.

Remove the keys and place them on the dash or passenger seat in clear view of the officer.

place your hands at 3 and 9 O'clock positions and wait for the officer to give permission before going for your ID and papers.

Sound advice indeed!  Still does not address do I cooperate during a stop, even with guns on the way to the range, or risk pissing him/her off by being uncooperative? If I am breaking no laws, why piss the LEO off?

If I were transporting illegally, I may try the refusal to answer, yet again, I may just turn on the charm and hope to get away! I don't know what I would do frankly!

All good points. I did no go deep into a stop and if you should comply or not. That is a tough question based on many scenarios. I say just do not offer ANY extra or "non" relevant information. Hopefully acting respectful and follow the advice we shared it will end there but you never know.

Ant.

Thanks for the advice Ant! I have always made out well being respectful. Evan Nappen may say I am a fool but I have always driven away with a warning! Even though I knew I broke the law! I agree on not offering information although I

did the last time I got pulled over! Get this! I was stopped for doing 90mph in a 30mph zone. The cop asked if I knew how fast I was going and I responded " Oh my God, I feel so stupid!" He asked why? I responded "I just came from the car wash and there was still some water on my hood so I tried to blow it off with the wind". He laughed his ass off and said "I never heard that one before" and let me go with a warning!

PS. I was stupid and admitted freely! I guess I had the right kind of cop that time! Next time, I will get out and wipe the water off!

I think there is less of an issue answering questions if you are on the way to a range. You are legally allowed to do this.

But if you are on the way to grandma's house, get pulled over, and are asked if they can look in your trunk, so you comply as a good citizen. Unfortunately you had dropped a hollow point .22LR cartridge in your trunk on your last trip to the range. Uh Oh.
