Trap Gun

Recommended Posts

Hello all.  I'm new to trap shooting and have been using my 930 Mossberg and doing fairly well with it.  Looking to upgrade to an O/U 12ga without breaking the bank.  I'm a lefty so its even more difficult to find something reasonable.  I came across a SKB 90TSS.  Just wondering if anyone here has a SKB or any knowledge of this company/gun.  Not much on the web but it seems like a lot of gun for the money.  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks.

As said above, not much difference in price.

As your already involved in Trap you should just let it be known where you are shooting that your in the market for A used gun.

You will be surprised how many guys have retired guns sitting in their safes.

Mine have been moved to the Grandkids that are shooting.

Thanks for the quick replies. I have looked at a few used Berettas and Brownings but all have been right handed. Stock replacements are available though but will probably hold up better.

MSRP is $1750.... For that price, I'd get a used Beretta.  Not much difference on the price.

I paid 1850 for my SP new.  It's a 20 ga, for my wife, but I don't think the 12 is anymore.  You just have to look around.

I just picked up a Mossberg Silver Reserve II Sport. 28" barrel, ejectors, and selectable first shot. Paid a little over $800 on GunBroker.

The original Silver Reserves were problematic. I've heard a lot of good things about the II version.

I won't be doing competition, but a friend from work always goes to the place in Howell all the time... which the name is escaping me right now (on Yellowbrook Road). Figured it would be something to do.

I have a SRII Field.  Great gun.  Deerslayer has the SRII Sport too.

I'm not sure I quite understand the issue with left or right handedness and trap shooting.  I'm left handed, and unless there is a cast issue with the stock, the "handed-ness" never made much difference to me.  I'm concentrating on the shot, so I don't see the shell coming out (for a pump or a semi), and I generally leave the safety "off" while on the shooting line, so that isn't an issue, either.

I shoot trap & sporting clays & 5 stand. I shoot trap way more then the others I've been using a BERETTA A 300 for everything it works fine. I've wanted to upgrade to an O/U but I shoot trap way more than any of the others. I bought a BROWNING BT 99 $1200 then I picked up a CZ DRAKE  O/U around $550. Basically met my $1500 budget no regrets.

Thanks for all the info folks.  I've decided after checking out a few more guns to pull the trigger on the SKB.  It has many upgrades right out of the box, comes in a lefty version

and won't break my budget.  I'll post pics and results after I get it to the range.  Thanks again.

    • I very seriously doubt this has anything to do with terrorism.    1) Harbor pilots are VERY seriously vetted, and highly trained. Not to mention extremely well paid. My experience knowing a few of them, and knowing how they are recruited and screened tells me that there is a slim to highly unlikely chance that a harbor pilot would have participated in anything like that.    2) Maintenance of foreign flag ships is well known to be dubious. Especially these days. These were NOT US flag, Jones act sailors. It was (to my understanding) a largely Indian crew on that ship, with a Ukrainian Captain. Indian crews are not exactly known for being stellar.    3) The bunkers (fuel) these ships use is ‘Bunker C’, which is a heavy, dirty fuel oil that can, and usually is, pretty contaminated. This stuff ain’t your car grade gasoline or diesel fuel. It’s nasty.   It requires nearly constant filter changes and maintenance to the engine/generators. The ship took on fuel prior to departing port, which would stir up all kinds of shit in the fuel tanks, which would contribute to particulates in the fuel lines/filters.    4) I’d say the posting of the chief engineer for Maserek above was pretty spot on as far as chain of events.    This was a shitty accident, with horrible timing and outcome. Not a terror attack.

Regardless, if it's not applicable in any way to this ship disaster, the methods described seem valid to me. And worthy of consideration for the future. As I said before, IMO something is coming.
