One (more) permit left, Striker/Polymer and under $700, What to buy....

Recommended Posts

Who's got the best wife ever?  This guy!  Wife told me with my last permit for my 30th birthday (August 9th) that my next pistol is on her!

I forgot to mention that for her 30th in October, I'm probably buying her a Burberry or LV handbag - but at least I don't have to buy this pistol!

She seems bored by black guns and asked if there was anything special besides a G19 or PPQ to buy me - I showed her the Legion and she was like oohhh thats good looking, shes not the type to bat at the price tag but i do - so I told her way too expensive for a present, especially in a state where I can't even use it as a BBQ gun lol

^^ If they made them in Gen4 configuration (I appreciate ambi mag release as a southpaw), I would consider a Glock 30S or even a single stack G36 - The G30 Gen4 is pretty much a heavy bear as well, and being a fatter .45, doesn't fit as well in my hands - Glock 9 mm's, (I have a G26 now, but also the 19, 17, 43) fit my hands perfect, I don't have large hands.

The VP9 no question is a great pistol, I just really enjoyed the feel of the PPQ in the hand - I still would have no qualms about purchasing a VP9 someday, just would take some getting used to flipping the mag release with my middle finger.

I say get the VP9

Definitely considering it!  The LE version is truly a "nothing else needed" pistol with the Meprolight sights, whereas I like to change the mag release, and slide lever on Glocks, and would obviously add new sights on a G19 - I need to feel it in the hand again but I remember it feeling great in store.

Take your $700, gift card, and a little more, then get a Beretta M9A3.

Gorgeous pistol - little out of my budget range currently though - But I will save it on the list for "17rd pistols to buy when I move out of NJ" :)

You can't go wrong with a PPQ M2.  Super accurate reliable gun.  Probably has the best out of the box trigger of just about any gun anywhere near your price point.

Already have one howard remember we chatted about sights and IDPA in my other thread and pm's :)

I love my PPQ!

My bad, I forgot.  In that case just get a CZ75b - another great gun with lots of ways to upgrade and improve it as and when you have free cash.

I would get the FNH FNS 9 full size. I recently purchased an FNX 40 (hammer fired, DA/SA) pistol, and I am considering getting either the FNX 9 full size next, or maybe go with the striker fired FNS 9. I looked at the FNS pistols a few months ago at the FN booth in the NRA Annual Meetings exhibit hall, & I really liked the FNS series. Maybe the FNS 9 compact? I have not yet had the opportunity to put any rounds through the FNX 40, but it is a really nice gun, with a 14 shot magazine. If you decide to go with the FNS 9, I am certain that you will NOT be disappointed at all. One of the best reasons I like the 9 over the 40 is that the ammo is a lot cheaper for target shooting purposes.

Well its down to the PPQ in 45 or the tried and true Glock 19 or the VP9 - will update what I end up with :)

I was holding out for the 9 round Sig P320 Compact in .45ACP but they seem perpetually not available, I've been on wait lists for them to be back in stock forever.  Was a cool concept to buy a Subcompact conversion for the P320 .45ACP but the availability from Sig is what is shying me away.

I have 3 more permits, one is used for my Beretta Model 102 (gifted from my grandfather), and I'll still have one left, although the budget is likely low for any more pistols this year.

Ooh Beretta 102?!  Very nice - hope it's in good condition.  Rare gun.

I know!  I had no idea until he gave it to me that it was produced for such a short period before being called the 76, it was sitting in a zippered leather case with wool lining for 40+ years in his attic - only 2 magazines and 1 is a bit worn but the gun is in great shape, I completely stripped it and gave it some good Ballistol treatment, removed the grips and really gave it some TLC - also found rare lefty Beretta walnut grips for it (it still has the original plastic grips too) - its a sweet little pistol and so gorgeous!  I will try to upload a pic of it currently.

I recently picked up a P320C with siglite sights. The trigger is a little bit heavier when compared with my vp9, but the break is much more defined.  Overall, the quality of the handgun is fantastic and ran beautifully with both FMJ and JHP down the pipe.  This will be my new EDC once I find a left handed holster for it.  However, I would try it first and not blind buy.

Availability has been a bit sketchy, but I found one through Hoffman's Gun Center in Connecticut.  They're an elite dealer and my "born on" date is 09/24/2016 which is pretty much fresh off the manufacturing line.  I was in the shop, processed through NICS, and paid in less than half an hour.

UPDATE 10/1/16 -

Damn you RTSP and your wait for a port! On Saturday I had to wait a bit before shooting and couldn't resist counter shopping - Yeah I brought a permit so I was prepared, but I didnt have to buy (yeah right)

For all intents and purposes the VP9 is usually about $50-100 more than a similarly priced Glock 19 - so with that in mind, I spent more than a few minutes holding in hand, dry firing to get a trigger feel, etc on the VP9 - I really wanted to fall in love with it and wouldn't have minded the price premium.  It feels great in the hand, similar to my PPQ, and is just a gorgeous pistol.

However, my awkwardly small hands I have real trouble with that paddle mag release.  Thumb is an absolute no, trigger finger is not as smooth when dropping a mag (takes it off the upper part of the frame so its less steady in the hand), and to do it with my middle finger, I'm sure I would have to practice more, but I just felt awkward curving my finger that much to drop it.  Justin @ RTSP has small hands like me so he felt my pain, and he noted that the Walther's with the paddle release extend further down the trigger guard which honestly would be better for me personally.  Trigger was lighter than my Glock but not as crisp, a decent amount of take-up, and reset isnt as crisp.  Not bad at all though, but owning a PPQ I am now spoiled :)

So with that being said I didn't fall in love with the VP9, and I ended up with another boring Glock :) - Nice and predictable trigger out of the box, and for me the Gen4 Glocks just feel great in the hand.  Now my G26 has a big brother ;)

If I was a righty, I'll be honest I probably would have left with the single stack Glock 36 that I held - it didn't feel like a .45ACP, felt like a compact 9mm in the hand.  But they only have the Gen3 frame so no reversible mag release which would have driven me crazy.  I wasn't in the market for another .45ACP currently, but I probably will be soon.  Shield 45 felt AMAZING, and I was most impressed with it as I always overlook the shield - but man is that a compact 7 rounds of .45 - XDS in 45 I held and the frame is just way too smooth and just doesn't feel good to me at all.

And the plus is that in another 6-7 months I'll be getting another Blue Label discount coupon from GSSF, most likely going with a G43 on that one - coming from a person with small hands, for me to say the G42 is TINY is an understatement - wow - my wife may like that, and the slightly lower recoil of the .380 compared to 9mm - so that one may go to her in the future, maybe in a pocket holster in her purse for when we are down south.

And I lied, I actually have another 2 permits now sitting on my desk, one is spoken for (Beretta 102 from my wife's grandfather) but I still have until late November or another 90 days after, to add something else (you know you can't waste these!)  - Definitely will look into another 45ACP for the next one, that Shield 45 was pretty amazing -

In the meantime, super happy with my Glock 19 and RTSP as always gave me great service.  Peter if you are still on the boards your staff is always excellent!

Do they make it with 10 round mags?  I know the factory is 17 or 18.  Before I bought that for the money I'd get a Wilson Combat converted 92.  I believe they are similarly priced, but not comparable.

    • I very seriously doubt this has anything to do with terrorism.    1) Harbor pilots are VERY seriously vetted, and highly trained. Not to mention extremely well paid. My experience knowing a few of them, and knowing how they are recruited and screened tells me that there is a slim to highly unlikely chance that a harbor pilot would have participated in anything like that.    2) Maintenance of foreign flag ships is well known to be dubious. Especially these days. These were NOT US flag, Jones act sailors. It was (to my understanding) a largely Indian crew on that ship, with a Ukrainian Captain. Indian crews are not exactly known for being stellar.    3) The bunkers (fuel) these ships use is ‘Bunker C’, which is a heavy, dirty fuel oil that can, and usually is, pretty contaminated. This stuff ain’t your car grade gasoline or diesel fuel. It’s nasty.   It requires nearly constant filter changes and maintenance to the engine/generators. The ship took on fuel prior to departing port, which would stir up all kinds of shit in the fuel tanks, which would contribute to particulates in the fuel lines/filters.    4) I’d say the posting of the chief engineer for Maserek above was pretty spot on as far as chain of events.    This was a shitty accident, with horrible timing and outcome. Not a terror attack.

Regardless, if it's not applicable in any way to this ship disaster, the methods described seem valid to me. And worthy of consideration for the future. As I said before, IMO something is coming.
