gun socks?

Recommended Posts

Okay, it ain't REALLY about guns, so I hope it's okay to post this here.

I have several of the gun socks, silicone infused, I think they call it, and wonder about long term storage in these. My thinking has been the sock around the firearm, then in a soft case, which is where most of them have been. Others that are in original plastic cases, I was thinking would be better protected by the  sock than the plastic with foam inserts.

A larger safe isn't feasible right now, but I do have a 2 x 2 x 1 1/2 footer that the smaller stuff would fit in, and the long ones would be dispersed in a couple of relatively unobtrusive locations.

One or two of these are likely going to be long term storage, due to family logistics, particularly a Mosin. It's in pretty good condition as it is, and has always been well cleaned by us after using the "corrosive" ammo. But it's not what I have heard called a safe queen.

Humidity isn't likely to be an issue in the doubled up cases I would think, and I'm trying to keep all in mid range humidity areas anyway.

Am I headed for any regrets in depending on the combination of sock and soft side cases? Is there something I am forgetting to account for?

Thoughts on this much appreciated.

After my grandfather died my dad was cleaning out his basement shop and found a small hidden walk in closet that my dad never knew about. Inside on a shelf was a Walther PP .22 wrapped up in one of those silicone gun rags. still in great condition and not one speck of rust. it had to have been sealed in there for a few years at least. Now I have a gun sock for every gun that I don't shoot regularly.  I still take the guns out and oil them twice a year though just to be on the safe side

They work great. BUT, make sure your weapon is dry. No moisture, etc. It will rust if you put it in wet because the silicone will not let moisture out. You can also throw some silica packs in there just in case.

Thanks, I love that Gramps had a good hiding spot. Checking them once or twice  a year I see us managing.

Good thinking on the silica packs, I have been hanging onto the ones from pill bottles, for that small safe. I will stick some into the socks as well now.

Gonna set them out in the sunlight on the next really dry day first, too.

due to limited space in my safe, I use the non-silicone impregnated socks you can get at like Midway to protect all my long guns, and use a "rechargeable" desiccant unit. So far no issues.

Rechargeable? Like in the oven type or battery type? Inferior minds wanna know!

I have this model. Works very well. Gets plugged in wall to dry it out then just sit it or hang it in your safe.

Perhaps he means those renewable dehumidifies that you plug in to dry out the desiccant media. I have one of these for a small safe and it works well.

Unless transporting I used to use just the socks, as in real socks, instead of throwing them away. They're fine for stacking handguns. My safe is too small for actual pouches for X number of handguns.

I'm kinda paranoid about humidity I have this and like it.its easy to plug in for a day and put back the next day. I have one or 2 that go in the oven and I never end up recharging them. These plug ins I recharge every time I need to. I also have a golden rod i the safe. And a few of the large desiccant packs in there. But these plug in one's are nice and easy. The oven ones you won't recharge when it's needed as it takes more effort.

Been using them with silica packs thrown in for good measure for quite some time.

What I didn't like with the others is throwing anything in oven that was not food, bugged me. Especially in the summer where we try not using oven.

We all understand the consequences and want to take the necessary precautions to prevent the corrosive effects of moisture on our various firearms.  For the past 1 1/2 years, I have been using silicone impregnated Gun Socks from Bore Stores for most of my handguns and they have worked as advertised so far:

http://borestores.com/order_online.php?cam=show_cat&cat_id=122&nav=Pistol%20Cases

I also put each handgun into one of these gun socks and then, like 345Sire, put the gun sock into a separate zippered soft fabric gun rug/case that easily fits into my range bag for storage and travel to and from the range.  Inside the gun rug I also have a couple of silica gel packs to absorb additional humidity moisture:

I also use the same plug-in, rechargeable silica mini dehumidifier that both bhunted and njplinker referenced above, with good results.  One additional step I take is putting one of these ZERUST VC2-1 NoRust Vapor Capusules into all of my MTM ammo boxes, as well as my Pelican hard cases for certain guns:

I wish I had YOUR space problem!

I use regular socks to store my safety glasses, except for a couple pair that my Mom-in-law knitted sacks for, cool gift!

Thanx!

The smartest of us ARE a little paranoid about this, as it's among the worst things that can happen to our mostly metallic tools.

As most of mine are interspersed around, The rod isn't going to help much. The oven type ought to work in a toaster oven, no? That would be easy enuff to do.

The rod idea is one I'll look more into when a bigger safe becomes a realistic option, thank you.

Lots of info, thanks. Those gun socks are especially nice, with them being shaped a bit, and now labeling on them. BEST is that they re made HERE, IN AMERICA!!!

I definitely need more space. Getting a large safe from the curb to the basement has always been my concern.

No disrespect intended to individuals who know far more than me about gun storage, but I hope you realize that you can over-do this whole moisture/storage thing right? There are guys who wash their cars every week. I take mine to the car wash every couple of years. All my guns are clean and have a very very light coating of oil on them. Each one is snug in its holy white sock. Plus they don't call it "stainless steel" for nothing :)

Not all parts are stainless steel.

But making sure everything is well lubed before storage is a good practice. I use to use the socks for their ability. But more so because in an over crowded locker, kept them safe from beating each other.

Now with my safe, I don't have those issues.

Biggest concern for getting it to the basement, is probably how many turns you have to make on the way, and how tight they are. Physics can be our friend!

I don't obsess about it, but want to preserve the condition they are in without worrying about real deterioration.

None of mine have much if any SS.

I have used silicone socks on both handguns and long guns. Never an issue. Also have 2 rechargeable dehumidifiers, never had a problem. Get socks by the 6 pack.
