Catch22LR 0 Posted July 22, 2016 Dear NJGF mechanics and crown vic owners, I'm replacing the front struts on my 06 grand marquis. Can this be done without removing the brake parts? The shop manual and YouTube videos all show the brake caliper bracket, caliper, and rotor being removed to make room. I saw some videos for vehicles with similar suspension setups, like the 04 F150, in which the brake parts were not removed and there was still enough room to work. Sincerely, Catch22LR
Schrödinger's cat 87 Posted July 22, 2016 You should be able to leave the calipers on the rotor and just take off the whole assembly by removing the two larger caliper bracket bolts. Watch your brake line.
Lambo2936 297 Posted July 22, 2016 Can't really compare an F150, much more space in general. Probably possible, i think the idea is just to make things easier though by gettin them out the way.
Malsua 1,422 Posted July 22, 2016 I've never done struts on a Grand Marquis. I will say that it's possible on larger cars to do it without removing the calipers and rotors but sometimes it's really hard to get to the bolts without the perfect combination of sockets and extensions. Also, you may need to get an impact wrench on it and if that's the case, you're more likely to need to remove it. I would yank the tire...if you can get to the bolts, don't bother taking off the brakes.
