Code Purple Weather

Recommended Posts

Batten down the hatches.  Just got an alert on my phone about severe thunderstorms and flash flooding heading our way.  Looked at NOAA radar, there's lots of purple moving towards the shore.(Mon and Ocean), alert in effect till 2000hrs.  This could be a bumpy ride.

We almost never lose power. I had my inlaws over for dinner. My Mother inlaw was laughing as it was getting worse and said at least we won't lose power. Few minutes later...lose power in the middle of cooking. Came back on for a few, went out again, we're all laughing...came back on again. Got to finish making dinner.

I know. Boring/not interesting story but it is what it is lol, it was funny to us a couple hours ago.

I used to lose power on a regular basis. I finally broke down a got a new generator about 5 years ago. I have not lost my power even once since that day!

Ain't that always the way?

Look at it this way. It took all those years for the dumasses at the utility company to fix the reason it went down the last hundred times.

I always used to find that power outages were the perfect time to push my mother in law down the stairs.

I love my inlaws, I actually get along with them better then my parents, not to say I don't love them too :p

I took a walk about 30 mins ago around the complex and there's a ton of branches and leaves down. Trenches where the rain ran. All and all not too bad damage around here in Mt. Olive.

I live in a very old house (civil war era) in an even older town. Moved here about a decade ago and I'm still astounded at how many power outages we get.  I'm not sure if it's because there's so many mature trees (that keel over if you sneeze on them), or whether our infrastructure is just badly outdated... or maybe because we only have one traffic light(?) and so we're the last town to get turned back on? But, I grew up in Bridgewater - and if there was an outage every couple of years it was a lot. In my current town however, you can literally bank on at least 3-4 outages a years... and not for a few minutes either. I'm camped out in a local Panera Bread right now, because the power went out at around 6:30 p.m. tonight, and the power company doesn't expect it to be back on until 10 p.m.  And this is a "brief outage" compared to some I've experienced in this town. The worst was after Sandy - just over 10 days.

I would love to get a generator, obviously! But, with an old house, I've found there's a never-ending list of things to do/buy - right now a generator is about #200 on the list. (sigh)

Harbor Freight has 800w running/1000w max generators for $100 and you can use coupons for 25% off.

They are better than nothing. I had one during Sandy and it was enough to run a lamp and a TV to watch DVDs. A little TV is a nice break after days without power. It was actually enough to run a fridge which is my biggest concern.

Edit: Please for your own safety remove all of that knob and tube nonsense.

My main concern is an outage in winter. I need a generator big enough to power the boiler and a few essentials. So, I have OIL...no natural gas - which means I need a generator AND a propane tank. Pricey. And yes, much of the knob and tube was removed - I'm SURE there's still some in the house though. (Pray for me! LOL.)

Long video but that was the majority of my ride home from work..... I had literally just gotten into the car when the rain hit...

Lightning strike right in front when I got to the first stop light.

GSP was slowed down to a crawl.  One area was flooded through.

I exited early and went local, and ran into some local flooding.  Saw a VW driving through he Mother Seton High School parking lot with water halfway up the car...  Didn't get to capture that on video as it was to the side.

Saw some roads flooded - had to make some quick turns and u-turns to get around....

I'm glad I have new, really good tires.

The camera caught a LOT of the rain noise..

Mrs. Peel, contrary to popular belief, knob and tube wiring is safer than some might think. As the wires are kept pretty far from each other, and are covered with half decent insulation,  if left undisturbed it's extremely unlikely to have a failure. It's usually when someone unfamiliar with the stuff tries to mess with it that problems arise.

Or when you get squirrels like T-Bill above! :scare:

Asbestos is also a fantastic building material.

Previous homeowners terrify me.

Previous homeowners terrify me.

Far too many homeowners mess with what they shouldn't, no question. It might be different if they did a little investigating before they started swing that sledgehammer.

I'm the first to admit asbestos has a downside, sure, but many things we use in life have dangers if not used properly.

When asbestos is used in a residential setting, if it's prepped right, and kept isolated from being disrupted, it poses no real threat.

I know we have improved on things, but that doesn't always mean we have to get rid of the older stuff.
