Finally Got a Ruger Precision

Recommended Posts

Match ammo vs match ammo price is very close. Barrel life is not. But we live in the land of 300 yds max at the vast majority of ranges here. Gravity is consistent so does it really matter if your bullet dropped 300 or 400 inches at 1000yds on a KD range? Drift. This is indeed a significant advantage of the 6.5. But it is still a skill you need to learn. Are you good enough to make a wind call that the 5" difference between the two at 500 yds matters? Keep in mind you will still need to compensate for both! A 5mph error in wind call is roughly 8" @ 500 for 6.5. Look, I like the 6.5. Ive shot them for over 8 years now, way before they became all the rage. But in our area, I would not thumb my nose at a 308 just because its a 308. To put it plainly, at the level of expertise most of us are at, it just doesn't matter much and a case could be made for learning on a cartridge that will teach you all you need to know about drop and drift. So while learning, which requires a solid amount of shooting(some say about 5k rounds to learn a specific rifle/caliber), it might not be a bad idea to be shooting the rifle that has long barrel life. When you reach the point of struggling to remain competitive or when it really matters, by all means go 6.5. The RPR factory barrels don't have that great of a rep, so cutting your teeth on the 308 and then having the option to go 6.5 with a custom barrel from the likes of LRI later is a good plan IMO.

...even for a stubborn SOB like me, THIS makes total sense!    :banghead:

hmm. some very good points. i'm not going to skimp on anything. looking at milsurp ammo because it's cheap and i can use it with the DD5V1 which is also on my radar. wasn't factoring in the "precision" aspect of this, and i def want the best performance i can out of it. a lot to think about now. thanks!

Yep, the barrels may not have a long life. But unless you are competing and/or going long range, it will be fine as you learn. I have no intentions of spending $5+ grand on a long range precision rifle till I get out of NJ. If your intent is to learn in this manner, go for it. You CAN swap out barrels as mentioned. But don't push yourself to buy one just to be in with the crowd.

I gave my favorite Rem 700 Police Sniper Package to a beloved Marine in my family as a welcome home gift... I replaced it with an LWRC REPR. But I still miss my Remmy.

I was considering just spending money on a custom rifle. But I Gibb Slapped some sense into my head when Ruger announced the RPR. I really liked the fact that 6.5cm was one of their options. The write ups on the caliber were very good. They mention that it may very well in deed, be the next 308...

I read everything I could find on the caliber and liked what I read.

Don't take this personally because I see this all to often. I really hate when people ask others to make a decision for them. Nobody really knows what you want/need.

All the years here, I never asked anyone to help me decide on something. Google is your friend. I read everything I can. You should too!

I've seen so many people buy something based on fad buying or to be cool, just to find out they didn't like what they got.

I've bought about 50-60% of everything I got sight unseen. You know what? With all the research I've done, I never regretted anything I bought. I practiced, adapted and over came.

So...... Don't buy a RPR just to be with the in crowd. I never fell prey to that nonsense.

When we got away from wheel guns decades ago and poly guns were introduced. Everyone said get a Glock, they are great. My rebel arse said, nope! I went HK. Both are great guns, but the point I wanted to make is I didn't want a "Me Too" gun.

oh i'm not asking to make a decision for me, i'm def getting a rpr. i just wanted to know if you can shoot 7.62 out of a rpr 308. saw it in the shop and fell in love with it. never owned a bolt action before but this just screams my name, esp after all of the research i've done. looks fantastic, highly functional and very well made at a fair price.

what gets me thinking is whether i'd WANT to shoot 7.62 even if it's technically possible. i was just researching and while match grade 308 is a little cheaper than 6.5, there seems to be a lot more variety available. so that, plus the fact that my range is maxed at 300 yards and i can use milsurp 7.62 if i wanted to, means it's about 80% certainty the 308 for me. planning on pairing it with a nightforce nxs in the 2.5-10 or 3.5-15 range

Like I said, match 6.5 vs 308 price wise is not a big diff. But it sounds like your concerns are not about accuracy, but what you can get cheap. So 308 is the better choice imho. There are plenty round styles by many companies. So stop trying to justify 7.62... not worth it.

308 can be had for good prices for just paper punching and hunting.

Just don't complain about accuracy if you buy junk ammo.

Gander Mountain will have the Ruger Precision for $1149.99 on Thanksgiving...  In .308 and 6.5

My wallet curses you Nick.  Why did you have to post that?

I really thought I was done buying firearms for a while, but  since I'm now into having .308 caliber for the 1919, why not get a "non-novelty" rifle that can use that caliber as well....

Scranton, PA has one.  About 2 hour drive.

The inventory manager didn't show it but that's good.  I know where Scranton is, I pass it on my way to University Park to bring my daughter to school.  Well only for one more semester thankfully.
