Remington 11-87 questions / commets

Recommended Posts

They are good guns, to a point. I depends what you want to do with them and how hard you plan on using it. If you plan to run it extra hard then it has some weaknesses such is getting dirty fairly quickly, so I wouldn't recommend it as a competition gun (I've used mine that way for years), but for hunting, casual shooting, etc then they are great. They are one of the softer shooting semi-auto's and of the faster cycling ones.

I have the 11-87 Sportsman with wood furniture.  It's a decent gun - not good for 3-Gun without a lot of work... Great for Clays and Hunting.  It's the softest shooting shotgun I have... It's a bit picky with ammo but I have to keep it cleaner.  Mine doesn't cycle well with light target loads - I need 3+ dram loads for it to cycle reliably.  Could be a cleaning issue - Still on the original o-ring too after a few years...

I've had an 11-87 since they first came out.  Never had a problem with it.  Used in hunting in various weather conditions, and shooting clays at Black River WMA.

Cleaned after every use, don't think I've every put more then 100 rounds through it in a session so I can't say how many rounds before it would become too dirty.

Only replaced the O ring on it, not because it failed in any way, just because it started feeling hard and pitted.  Pretty sure I used a Viton #21 as the replacement.

Thanks for that - was looking for that size.  10 pack on amazon is $1.50.  https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FMYSW4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

My experience is that 100-150rd is the correct cleaning interval for the gas system. Push it to a case of ammo and you will have problems for sure.

This isn't necessarily a horrible thing that means don't buy the gun. I actually liked my 11-87 a lot, but after I broke its lifter (which was modified and abused with a lot of high impact quad loading, not the gun's fault) I decided to move on. I still have it, haven't shot it in a year, but if I was going to go hunting I'd probably take it out of the safe again.

You guys are awesome, I guess I'm hitting the store after work tomorrow to pick one up. I just wanted it for the Sunday shootouts at the Clinton range. I clean my other semi after every use anyway so the cleaning is not a problem. My (really) old Remington Model 11 semi beats me up and I think its time for an upgrade! Thanks for your comments.

I usually have mine at the shoots - will have it with us on Sunday.
