son of sam 9 Posted August 24, 2016 I know this is a gun sight and thats why Im here. But, in NJ the stick and string method offers so many advantages and so much more time to harvest I have to ask. Without getting to specific and making this a long topic. What is the minimum bow needed as far as FPS and KE is concerned to effectively use the bigger 3 blade expandables? I need to get an Xbow to open up my areas and time. I dont want to be the AH that maims and wounds. I want to drop the dear similar to the way my muzzloader or 30-06 does, or at least as close as I can with an X-bow.
Krdshrk 3,877 Posted August 24, 2016 I don't believe FPS is as much of a factor with Crossbows except for longer range and retaining velocity. You're not going to be taking a deer at 100 yards with a Crossbow - more likely 40 yards or less. Pretty much any compound crossbow you get will be over 300FPS. I believe that will go all the way through the deer. I'll wait for the experienced to chime in - Deerslayer is well versed in hunting with xbow. FishNHard 145 Posted August 24, 2016 Any bow or xbow you buy has more then enough power to kill deer I shoot both, with a good shot placement you can drop a deer with a 45lb draw weight bow , moist people like the a higher lb bow to bust thru shoulder bone , for broad heads I like the tried and true muzzy 3 blade fixed , they been around forever for a simple reason THEY WORK EVERY TIME , I had a few lost deer with the expandable broad heads for the simple reason they did not open and your basically shooting a field point . Well, a Pistol Crossbow wouldn't... but that's just using improper tools
FishNHard 145 Posted August 24, 2016 Krdshrk that's true but if you get close enough you can just beat it over the head with it

son of sam 9 Posted August 24, 2016 NICKJC- I think you missed the part about X-bow. I don't have the time in my schedule to be able to become effective with a bow. Crossbow let's me bypass a lot of the practice time needed. I have plenty of time shooting from tree stand with rifle. I will take a day and try some elevated x-bow shots. My question is really about wichanging x-bow to buy.
DaddyNick 408 Posted August 25, 2016 With bow minimum draw is 35lb. Most xbows today have 125lb to 175lb draw. Most xbows will shoot dimes at 25-50 yards. Decide whether you want one with a red dot sight or an actual variable scope. Today's xbows will penetrate NJ deer with ease. Regardless of the head you use if you put it in correct spot the deer will usually go less than 100 yards. Your budget will dictate what you choose. I have a strykezone 350. It's 5 years old. I know a lot of guys get new gear every year but it shoots bullseye's so I ain't changing. Lol
T Bill 649 Posted August 25, 2016 Crossbows must have a minimum draw weight of 75 pounds and a stock length of 25 inches. Bows 35 pound draw weight.
Heavyopp 167 Posted August 25, 2016 Go to Wyvern creations website -- Buy whatever crossbow strikes your fancy there -- David, the owner, won't sell you a piece of crap bow I personally went with a 10 point stealth with accudraw -- Main reason was my 13 year old son could cock the bow by himself and pass the bow test Have you taken a bow test to get you license? Better get moving if you plan on getting out for fall season -- Good luck
