Gun For Hire - Steel Rounds?

Recommended Posts

Can you use steel rounds at gun for hire? Asking this because I brought tula 9mm steel ammo to the range and an RSO told me that it's not allowed because it's steel tipped. If I get steel rounds that are brass tipped, would that be allowed? Pretty sure they don't care about the jacket, only the actual bullet hitting the backstop.

That ammo is fine.  Ranges are worried about steel in the BULLET (the part that comes out of the muzzle end when you shoot the firearm), not the CASE (the part that comes out of the ejection chamber and hopefully falls on the floor, not down the back of your shirt).

Yeah that was my question if they cared about the jacket and the bullet or just the bullet itself. Thanks!

Simple test before you go to the range - get a strong magnet and pass it over the bullet end - if it is magnetically attracted to the bullet then it most likely has steel in it and may be denied at the range.

I think your terminology us what is confusing us. You have a bullet (the bit up front that goes flying out of the gun really fast) and you have a case (the bit that holds the bullet and the powder and the primer and falls out of your gun slowly). Bullets can have jackets (the bit that covers the bullet) and the jacket can be copper, steel, polymer, etc but the jacket is part of the bullet and goes flying really fast downrange still attached to the bullet. And then the bullet has a core which most of the time is lead but sometimes can have steel in it.

Usually if the bits that go flying really fast (the bullet, as made up by its core and its jacket) contain steel the you can end up with backstop damage and you likely be prohibited from shooting it indoors and sometimes even outdoors. Usually if the case (the bit that doesn't go flying really fast) contains steel no one cares.

I have no idea lol. Here's the link to the ammo http://www.bulkammo.com/bulk-223-ammo-223rem55grfmjta223100tulammo-1000

FWIW, I am assuming you are shooting that ammo in an AR type of rifle. I have personally seen on two different times AR type rifles that got steel cases stuck in their chambers that had to be hammered out with a cleaning rod. Not sure what brand of ammo it was, and it may never happen to you, but it looked like it really sucked for those guys!

IIRC, some ranges don't allow steel cased ammo. Mainly because they collect and/or keep the brass casings for reloading and/or resale and don't want to separate them from the steel casings.

A quick sweep with a magnet takes care of that pretty quickly.

I have a very hard time believing an RO at gun for hire told you that tula steel case ammo is "steel tipped".. what?

I feel like this is some sort of gag.

Steel core. If HEAD stuck to magnet it was not allowed.

Had similar happen over a year ago there. Our commie Mosin surplus was banned. Never heard of steel case 9mm, copper jacket or not, banned. Must be something new?

no not new. been in place for a while.

Directly from http://gunforhire.com/faqs/

Can I shoot rifles and shotguns at your range? What kind of ammunition is allowed?

Yes. We allow rifles under .50 calibers. We DO NOT allow ammunition that is steel core, armor piercing, tracer, incendiary, or bi-metal jacketed. Shotguns are allowed, however the rounds must be at least buckshot or slugs. No birdshot / target loads. We ask that you inform our range staff that you intend on shooting a rifle or shotgun prior to entering the range so that they may verify your ammunition is appropriate for use on our range. Note: We do not allow pistol grip shotguns in our range. All long guns must be fired from the shoulder.

pretty sure that FAQ page is outdated...

if you guys are so curious, why not just call them up and ask to speak with Ant or one of the managers?

I've never had an issue with any kind or brand of ammo I've shot there (except steel-cored surplus and M855).  They also have rests to shoot your long guns with a huge steel cutout table to shoot with a bi-pod in the 50yd area

It's well-known that the commie Mosin surplus ammo bullets have steel cores....
