Crossbow accessory help

Traded for this bad boy yesterday

An excalibur axiom with 6 fang carbon bolts. It's much first experience with a crossbow and man this thing is really sweet. It seems to be a pretty well regarded setup. My girlfriend and I shot it about 100 times yesterday and by the end of it I could nail the bullseye at 25yards and vitals on the deer target at 50(seems to be max effective range?)pretty damn consistently. Maybe I'll do some deer hunting with it when I get around to getting my bow permit.

 

Anyway I'm looking to pick up a case, some more bolts and some broadheads for it. I'm slightly ignorant to sizing these things, it seems 20 or 22 inch bolts are the standard for it and total weight should be 350grains. It looks like 150grain broadheads are the norm for it. So give me some recommendations for these and some good stores. I know heritage has a pretty decent archery section. All help is appreciated.

 

 

 

Also waxing? This seems to be all over the place as far as maintenence from every 5 to 10 to 50 to 100 shots.

Rail lube and bowstring wax are your friend here -- Every 20 or so shots for the rail lube and 50  for bow wax is pretty reasonable

As for bolts -- why change what you have? -- Source what you are shooting and buy them -- Obviously your crossbow does well with them

 

 

Broad heads will be your next dilemma -- I'm right down the mountain from you in Middlesex -- You can try out a couple of my target broad heads and see if any work with your setup

 

I shoot magnus Black hornets and NAP spitfires -- Both equally accurate in my crossbow and deadly on deer 

 

Forgot to mention --- 150 grain broad head is very heavy -- How heavy are the field points you are target shooting with?

I own an Excalibur.  Best crossbow made in my opinion.  I hunt with it, never really shoot it much except to verify that the scope is still zeroed (5 to 10 shots).  Your crossbow uses 20" bolt/arrows.  I use Excalibur Firebolt's and Excalibur Boltcutter Fixed 150gr broadheads.  This setup is very accurate and shoots through deer for a very quick clean kill.  I wouldn't shoot 100 shots without waxing the string and lubing the rail.

I shoot a Parker. I lube the rail every time I take it out of the case. And wax the string before I put it back in the case. I shoot weight forward parker red hot 22" full capture nock bolts, with 100g G5 montec broad heads for hunting. You should be using the same weight field points for target practice that you plan to use for broadheads.

 

I buy everything from Simon Peter sport in Newton. The bow tech there Tommy (also one of the owners) is awesome. I don't let anyone else touch my archery equipment. You should probably drop it off at a reputable shop for a tune up, just to have everything checked out once a season. I had my string and cables replaced this season. And I had two cracked limbs I couldn't see, glad I brought it in for service, because he found them, and got me a replacement head and limbs under warranty. Could have been pretty bad if one of those limbs let loose on me, especially 15' in a tree. They're fun to shoot, good luck with it. I don't shoot mine much except to make sure it's zeroed in for deer season.

 

I also bought a crank cocker for mine. It's dangerous to try, and recock after a shot in a treestand. Makes it really easy to re-cock with a crank.

I own an Excalibur Ibex, which is basically the same as an Axiom with a different camo pattern.  I love mine and it is very accurate!  The most important thing in regards to bolt/broadhead weights is that fact that it is a recurve and you need to go a little heavier than compound crossbows. Excalibur suggests 125-150 grain broadheads. There website is a great resource and they also have a great forum there.

Anyone have opinions on hard vs soft cases? They both seen about the same price

I have a soft case for mine - because I don't have room for a hard case and I don't really throw much around when I have the xbow.

Permit bow starts late October, the 29th I believe.  Deer Zone 5 and Bear Zone 2 here.

Fall bow is included in your all around sportsman. Permit bow, (begins end of October) you will have to buy a zone specific permit for. So you're good to go for fall archery. If you want to do bear archery you need a permit for that too.

I have a parker red hot soft case for mine, because no one makes a hard case my bow fits in. It's too long for all the aftermarket hard cases. Parker only makes a soft case for my crossbow.
