Inexpensive handguns for the ladies? Something 'cute'

Recommended Posts

isn't that what you want though?   I'm sure you could ignore any of the things he says you "should" do in his book and he will gladly accept your $ and do his best to try to get you out of trouble, but had you listened to him to start, you wouldn't be in trouble to begin with.

If I'm going to and from the range and accidentally leave a bullet in one of my many mags, I'm not going to sweat it at all.

Honestly - that book is a lawyer's interpretation on the most successful way to keep yourself from getting arrested.  Nappen suggests not transporting loaded mags.  If you get jammed up for a loaded mag that's kept separate from the gun and someone says it's a firearm, it's going to get tossed out in court.

If I remember earlier threads correctly, there was a debate about loaded mags at SAFE con and Nappen maintained it shouldn't be done. Transportation of loaded mags would probably be tossed out in court, eventually, but the unlucky victim is probably looking at being separated from their firearm(s) for at least a few weeks (possibly longer) and a lawyer's bill/court costs somewhere in the range of $3-$5K. Spending two minutes of range time (and that's all it takes with an UpLuLa) loading mags for the first go-round is worth it to me to avoid the aforementioned mess. YMMV.

An intruder with malicious intent in a home defense situation is different. In that scenario, the first weapon I get my hands on is the one I use be it a baseball bat, spoon or one of my husband's firearms.

Yeahhh yeaahhhh...

I would let her pick one but my LGS and most others wont let her touch them as she has no FID. Such BS....

So what i might like she probably wont. I think Branchburh Heritage was ok with it, but Rahway gave me the nastiest look when i even dared ask, as though shed try and kill them right then and there. Otherwise i wouldnt even ask.. i may have to go to Easton or Branchburg for her to hold something.

There is no law that says she has to have her FID in hand to touch a pistol at an LGS if she is shopping - tell the guys you are waiting for it from the PD - most of the shops just ask for it because they don't want a bunch of tire kickers coming in and wasting time - you need to go find a different shop immediately man.

Its a "store policy", not the law, as long as she is over 18 for long guns and over 21 for handguns (correct me if wrong on the age thing) - this would fall under "temporary transfer" laws - its like saying your buddy can't shoot your gun at the range unless he has an FID.

I go to RTSP usually but have also been to Steve @ Monmouth Arms shop before (he has a Tiffany Blue Walther PK380 right now)

Help her get a cute FID and a cute P2P in her own name, then take her to a store, preferably with a rental range, where she can pick out a cute gun to purchase using her cute permit.

This avoids all of the potential legal problems cited previously in this thread.

What potential legal problems? Jesus christ people. She wont be walking around with my AR strapped to her back in the streets of Newark. All im looking for are suggestions for handguns that she might like like she does the 15-22 AR i have to keep her interested when we go to the range.

If i was worried about legal problems, i wouldn't own firearms. Hell, i probably wouldn't live in this shitty state to begin with.

I have a nice big shiny safe that she can't get into. The only time she handles firearms is if i am there. If i had any questions regarding the legality of her shooting my handgun, i would ask, but it isn't illegal for her to shoot a handgun that I own, so long as i am there and it is at a range or other legal location.

To be clear, not bashing the discussion above regarding the transfer of firearms and what not, but moreso the people worried about me going to jail because this is a potential straw purchase or what if she shoots some bad guy and its my gun or whatever. Holee crapolla peepul. Relax. Yes, the system sucks, but unless you're an idiot or have some genuinely horrible luck, NOTHING is going to happen.

My firearms are ALL legal and ALL registered appropriately. They are locked in a safe, away from my one year old (and S.O.), because if god forbid something happened to her (or she shot one of us) the last thing i'd be worried about is going to jail, seeing as id probably take my own life.

NOW THEN,

i may just get a green cerakote job on my G19 slide and buy a VP9 with my 2nd permit. I have to have her shoot it and see if she likes it.

Yea, im fully aware of this. You're correct about the ages, 18 to own long guns, 21 for handguns.

Heritage guild in Rahway is a no-go. IIRC Branchburg the guy was much nicer (other than the few times i bought ammo in rahway). Their employees at the Rahway location are for the most part fairly rude. Probably because i'm a young guy; i dont know, but youd think they would be more welcoming of young enthusiasts if anything. Theres one younger employee there and he's alright, but the older guys are just complete turnoffs whenever i go looking around there. Every time i go looking to buy a firearm, i end up leaving disappointed because of the way i'm treated...

Easton PA was better. Havent been to the branchburg location in a while but they were all great there.

As far as the loaded mag thing discussed above; i transport local mags. Locked in separate cases from my firearms, usually ammo in the back seat guns in the truck bed unless its her car. NJSP Cleared it as fine at the last SAFE convention from what i was told.

nor should you.  but if you were paying a lawyer to keep you out of jail, wouldn't you want him to err on the side of caution

Take her to Easton then, or maybe Cabela's (just to browse on both with pistols obviously) - I've never been to HG but I hear pretty bad things most of the time about the Rahway and Branchburg stores, almost on the level of Efinger's bad, lol.

On the loaded mags part, I load up at home and just leave them out of my pistol or rifle - toss the mags and pistols in my range bag and keep it in the trunk with a small lock on the zippers (I dont have a trunk) - if I had a trunk I wouldn't bother with a lock - but all goes in the same range bag, I don't overthink the "what ifs" much

Next time you go to rahway look for Keith. He's young with red hair and a beard. Great guy and a pleasure to work with. The manager (Joe) is good as well. They're basically the only two I deal with there if I can help it

The manager is the younger guy, right? Like upper 20's, maybe? He's the guy i normally deal with when i get ammo (hence the 'other than the few times i bought ammo @ rahway) and is fine. The old guys working the cases, not so much.

Go to a different store. I don't know how many times I've said things about heritage lacking customer service

Can't beat the convenience of having a LGS that close, though, where you can browse. The other one on Main st (bullethole i think?) Seemed nice when i stopped in but not much when it comes to stock; id probably have to order anything i'd want.

I don't see any reason in that post why she can't just get her own FPID

I would guess that Joe is in his mid 40s. He's a relatively big guy with glasses I believe.

I agree - she should get her own and tell her friends how cool it is to have one. The more independent women shooters we have the better - not just "I'm borrowing my husbands guns" or "he bought it for me but it's really not mine"

It is simply unnecessary; everyone else said to for legal reasons, i figured you were saying the same, like the guy you quoted was.

She may even be a prohibited person; i'm honestly not sure. IIRC she was on suicide watch after her mom left the country to marry some guy she met online when she was young. Not certain of that, though. I don't ever really bring it up, but i'll ask her about it out of curiosity.

Does she want cute like colorful? As I said Steve at Monmouth Arms isn't far from you and has a Tiffany blue with stainless slide Walther PK380

I dont really think she cares much because she liked a few of the other compact handguns we saw that were simply nice, clean looking with wood grip panels and stuff, but i know she has pointed out the Kimber sapphires MULTIPLE times, as well as a pink ruger stripper pistol (LCP?), haha. I don't think its a matter of colorful as much as just "pretty" in general. I feel the same way when it comes to the Nice 1911's out there with the beautiful wood grip panels and designs, but she also likes the typical girly handguns. I'll have to go to the store with her and see what exactly it is she wants..

Saw it, and almost bought it but then i saw the ammo prices for 380 and its pretty crazy. I don't know how much she'd shoot it but i know she burns through 22 like its nothing. Its a fine looking piece, i'd love to get my hands on one. I also read online, though, that it has very loose tolerances and a loose slide therefore making it very inaccurate, though, which also turned me off. No sense in buying a plinker that you know is gona suck just so it makes a bang noise. Haha

She may be a prohibited person; i'm honestly not sure. IIRC she was possibly institutionalized for a few days/on suicide watch after her mom left to Australia to marry some guy she met online when she was young. Not certain of that, though. I don't ever really bring it up, but i'll ask her about it out of curiosity.

Well you kind of answered your own question. If the state would deem her a prohibited person then she should have no access to guns period. Pretty sure there is a law for that. I'm not trying to harsh your style man but this all could be solved by her just getting her card

I find it quite unlikely that there is a law on the books prohibiting they use someone elses firearm. She had her hunting license and use to go hunting and all, as well as compete in Archery.. A prohibited person is prohibited from owning a firearm/obtaining an FID, not necessarily from shooting someone elses firearms at a gun range. As far as i know, at least. I've never heard of someone who was on anti-depressants not being allowed to go to the range.

That said, again im not certain and should have her apply just for Shits & Giggles; i'm curious what they might be able to dig up when it comes to that stuff as this was like 10+ years ago. I know she was one of those emo kids when she was younger, so....

To be clear, i realize that FELONS are not allowed to be in possession of a firearm (right?) but i dont think thats the case for every person with depression.

By that logic, anyone caught with a dime bag or has ever had depression (60%) may as well not be allowed to have access to, let alone own, a firearm as well....? I'm all for keeping firearms out of the hands of people who are insane/unstable and violent criminals, but if we restricted every depressed or anxious person nation wide, we'd lose our rights overnight because our numbers would be so low, haha

Any prohibited person is not allowed access to a firearm. That being said. I highly doubt she's a prohibited person for a few days in psyc because of "potential" suicide or was on watch. Especially if it was 10+ years ago and she was under the age of 18.

Do what I did and encourage your wife over and over to get her FID and maybe her own permits to strengthen HER 2A rights and Women's rights to owning firearms in NJ. It costs under $100 and only a few minutes of her time...besides waiting for the actual FID/P2P. Get her to join the NRA and become active like I have with my wife. Just "buying her a gun to come shoot with you", does not further the 2A in NJ. If she wants to be involved...she WANTS to be involved just as much as you. Do all or nothing.

She talked about getting it before, but it took her like two years to get her DL switched over...

I'll have her apply when we have some time to kill one day. It's not too horrible of a process here in Woodbridge.

She was around 12 years old, this was i believe 9 or 10 years ago. I doubt she is a prohibited person too, but you never know. She hasn't been on meds or anything -other than possibly for anxiety- in the last quite a few years.

Thing is, if she has an FID i have to pay for firearms that will be hers.

If she doesnt, i get to pay for firearms that are mine at the end of the day...

LOL

Then she's not a prohibited person. Have her get her FID, not for your firearm safety of laws, but to get her more interested in 2A and let her buy her own handgun. Either way, I paid for both my wife's rifle and handgun...they're hers and it makes her feel better.

I Guess i'll buy her one for one of the holiday's or something, haha.

If she has her FID, would she be able to store her firearms in the same safe as mine, legally?

Also, we're not legally married. We got engaged like two years ago, but haven't gotten married so that we can each keep mooching off of our parents' health insurance policies until we're 26 or whatever. Not sure if that changes anything. Just easier to say wife, i despise the word 'fiance'.

This x100!!! We need more of us in the fight and help her to do it!

And to answer your question yes her guns can be stored in the same safe as yours - you overthink a lot of legal things that aren't even legal things lol.

No law on the books that says in the home that a wives gun can't be stored with the husbands lmao.

CZ-P01 in 9mm. Put some "purdy" aftermarket grips on it.

I was going to suggest the Pavona Witness as well. Not sure if the caliber change kits work with the Pavona line or not. If it does she can shoot 9mm and get conversion kit for 22 as well. I've read good things about the conversion kits for the regular Witness.

CZ has 22 caliber conversion kit. Can always buy the conversion kits later with no permit worries.

Let us know what she winds up picking getting. If it were me I would let her pick her owm. Just put a limit on it. What if you pick it and she hates it?
