Next build... RRA 20" upper?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.  I'm planning on doing a 20" (or maybe 18") build in the near future.  Nothing fancy or expensive, but I wanted to take advantage of the higher velocity and shoot longer range when time permits.  I have a 14.5 middy setup at the moment and thought this would compliment it pretty well in the safe.

What are your thoughts on a standard A4 20" setup?

Here's an RRA 20" Standard A4 w/ 1/9 twist (223 wylde chamber) that I've been eyeing so far:

http://rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=267

BCM was my first choice, but man the price adds up real fast.

It's pretty well priced for what it is and would pretty much serve the purpose I'm looking for as a 'longer' range fun gun.  Are there any real drawbacks to having a chrome-lined vs bare chrome-moly barrel?  I know chrome-lining enhances the life and ease of maintenance, but are non-chrome lined barrels really more accurate (provided it's a good barrel)?

Any advice would be appreciated!

I have no problem with RRA uppers.  If  you do pursue a RRA upper you need to call Pete at AR15Sales.com (Legal Transfers, LLC) .  He was in NH and is one of RRA largest dealers.  I believe he has moved to FL now but the number is the same 603-770-2281.  Dropped shipped to your door from RRA, the best price period.  I have used him before, no problems,

The upper is offered in 1:8 SS, that would be a winning combo. My first rifle is an RRA and just make sure the bolt is staked well and your GTG.

IMO if you want to shoot at ranges a 20" would justify, your going to want to get a barrel that in known for good accuracy. The RRA also has they wylde which will shoot .223 better than most 5.56 chambers.

Thanks for the suggestion - I've seen Pete's ads on Ar15.com and happened to have a few of his offerings bookmarked.  His prices were definitely good compared to others online

Get a psa premium upper and if the barrel (fn made) isn't accurate enough then swap a new one on. I think you would be fine with the psa tho.

this signature exceeds the 15 character capacity count

I've been checking PSA for a while but they've been out of stock.  Their premium uppers are not bad at all

I have a 20" PSA CHF premium upper, and it has been outstanding through thousands of rounds. Highly recommended. Wait for PSA to make them available again and grab one.

I have the same RRA upper as you do fatty. It was my first AR built and after assembling the lower (spikes tactical stripped lower with a magpul rifle stock, standard lower parts) I decided to buy the complete upper. Shooting it at 25 meters ( I usually shoot in an indoor pistol range in PA) it was pretty accurate with American eagle 5.56mm ammo. Independence isn't as accurate with my gun.

Just letting you know, the barrel is HEAVY! I weighted it with my bathroom scale with a loaded hex mag in the mag well and and other loaded magazine in a buttstock mag pouch and the total setup weighted 9 pounds. Keep in mind I'm just running Troy fixed sights, the front site post and a nylon sling.

I really got to join a outdoor range near I live. That gun is meant to be shot at a longer range than 25 meters.

Damn 9lbs is pretty heavy without an optic lol.  I won't mind though since it's just going to be a fun range gun.

Is yours the standard A4 20" with the 1/9 twist, wylde chamber, and non-chrome lined barrel?

Yes it, but I think it's chrome lined

Pete @ AR15Sales.com (Legal Transfers, LLC) just gave me a knockout price

A4 Standard 20" Upper:

20" Barrel upgraded to SS 1/8 twist and 223 wylde chamber

Factory pinned & welded brake (kind of an A2 style closed end 'military' brake - didn't care about this since there's barely any recoil as it is)

Includes BCG

BCM ambi charging handle

A2 FSB w/o bayo lug

$631 Shipped ... w/ factory compliance work performed.  This price can't be beat - especially with RRA's lifetime warranty.  Roughly $150 cheaper than ordering from RRA

Can't wait

I have two PSA AR's and have had zero problems with either of them. I just bought a third one this morning for my wife. They're both super accurate & reliable, and were a great price. I've been waiting for PSA's 20" upper to come back in stock for months. You can sign up for an email notification on their website. If I recall, they were $529, so the Del-Ton might be a better deal.

If the PSA upper was available, I would've gone that route, but instead I got a great price on a RRA A4 SS 1/8 223 Wylde upper that is more inline with what I want to do with it in the future.  The price just couldn't be beat with everything I got from Pete @ Legal Transfers, LLC.

I'm sure the Del-Ton is OK for the money as a purely budget minded build, but I wanted a better barrel for distance.

So far I'm looking at just under $1k (w/o optics and a trigger upgrade) for the complete rifle.  I'd imagine the final total will be closer to $1700-1800 once I decide on the optic & trigger (geissele SSA-E or hi-speed NM)
