Lost FID

Recommended Posts

So i'm 99.9% sure I lost my FID card. I remember having it on me yesterday untill about 7pm. Once 7 hit, no idea. Anyways not a big deal, will just apply for a duplicate.

In the meantime, I took a picture of it when I first got it. Can I still go to the range aka drive there without my physical card? Or buy handgun ammo and/or rifles & shotguns?

You don't need to have your FID to go to the range, so you're good there.  Buying ammo online is fine without it too, but some sites require to have it on file.  SGammo is one online outlet that doesn't require an FID copy on file.

You cannot buy rifles & shotguns without the physical card. There's no way for a retailer to know if you actually lost the card or if it was taken away.

I clarified :-). I bought couple of rifles in NY and dont remember presenting FPID.  As others noted, you dont need FPID at all for transport to range.

Well...no. Federal law allows out of state long gun purchase from a FFL as long as it is legal in both states. You need a FID to but a long gun in NJ so you need to have it to but one out of state.

He can buy a long gun from me without a FPID.

I've purchased 2 long guns in PA from 2 different FFL's. Neither one asked for my FID

If I may ask, how long ago was this? When I saw long gun purchases by others at the gun show in PA (last week) the first thing every seller asked for was a DL. I can't imagine that an FFL would risk losing their license by not asking someone with a NJ DL to produce a NJ FPID, but I'm no lawyer…

However, Nappen says (p.170 | © 2015 edition):

(1) May a New Jersey resident purchase a rifle or shotgun in another state?

A: Yes, but only from a federally licensed dealer. Dealers must obey Federal law, the law of New Jersey (purchaser must have a New Jersey Firearms Purchaser Identification Card and complete a Certificate of Eligibility), and the law of the dealer's home state concerning purchase of rifles and shotguns. (See U.S.C. 18 § 922 (b) (3).)

Not sure about that.....depending on the town PD; they are likely going to run you thru the wringer all over again.

Yeah, crossing my fingers. But my fingerprints are already on file so I don't have to wait for that appointment. My handgun permits came back in 2 weeks so i'm guessing my duplicate ID would be around the same time frame. Nothing personally has changed aka name/address etc.

NJSA 2C:39-5. c. Rifles and shotguns.

(1) Any person who knowingly has in his possession any rifle or shotgun without having first obtained a firearms purchaser identification card in accordance with the provisions of N.J.S.2C:58-3, is guilty of a crime of the third degree.

You can transport if you "first obtained" a FID card.  The law does not say you have to have it on you.

You haven't read far enough. Like all NJ law, this one is convoluted. You have to go further and read the exceptions.

2013 and 2014. All I provided was my drivers licenses.

Don't leave us guessing.  How do the exemptions effect transporting long guns with an FID card?

What town ?, if you dont mind.

Boonton

I think the 2 weeks would apply if your father is the police chief or governor,  short of that its just like applying as if you are new to the sport.

Lol i'm being serious. My handgun permits (3 of them) took 2 weeks to come in from the date of dropoff. The hardest part of applying was getting the detective to pick up his damn phone so that I could drop & pick them up. And no, I have literally no connection to the police department. Not even an officer that's my 10th cousin 500th removed.

Interesting. Unless there is another Boonton in NJ, there have been reports of lengthy wait times (like 3 months) for appointment and atleast 30 to 60 days processing.

No there's only one Boonton, NJ. And yeah, my best friend waited about 7 months for his initial FID. But I think he had a prior arrest (drugs) that was thrown out but still, it was logged. I didn't have anything on my record, literally my first moving violation was a few weeks ago.

From fingerprints to FID in my hand was literally 31 days. From INITIAL drop off of applications, it was 45 days.

UPDATE!!!!

FID has been found! I guess it fell out of my pocket on main street and I just got a call from my mother saying someone found it and just dropped it off! I'm so happy I don't have to apply for a new one. Now I will make damn sure that the FID only comes with me to the Range or LGS.

    • In 50 years of living in NJ I've never experienced any attempt to inspect the interior of the home, and only one definite inspection of the exterior for an announced reassessment of all properties and that was a drive by. About 9 years of that was living in an apartment, but still, uncommon. Every place I lived had either a finished attic, basement, or both. But they were also included in the habitable square footage on the taxes when we got there.
    • 27.00 and change in tolls to drive down the shore from Rutherford,  47.00 in tolls to go out to Long island to visit dying relatives. Now I read they are going to raise the fees in the DMV. Murphy lied just to get elected when he said that seniors will get a significant tax break with his StayNJ" program to stop us from leaving.   Keep voting for democrats...this is what you get.  Tax and spend is all they know.  Never cut anything.  This state sucks.
