Smartgun reliability

Recommended Posts

I doubt there are many here that think smartgun technology is good, but here is proof of how bad it could be.  This weekend I shot two shooting matches and loaded lots of magazines by hand, I can't be bothered with using a loader.  Today my iPhone will not read either of my thumbs to unlock as they are both scratched up.  Just imagine my problem if I had to rely on a smart gun today.

What troubles me most about this technology is that even if they could make it work perfectly, there would be nothing to prevent bad actors,

either private citizens or people in government, from disabling it when they wanted to.

50% of the time, it works every time!

The biometric devices I have experience with work the first time about 70% of the time under ideal conditions. Adding stress, panic, and any amount of environmental factors to the mix...well I don't like those numbers in a situation where 100% reliability is an absolute must.

When the movie, music, or software industry releases some new security feature for protecting their product, it is pretty much always cracked, broken, or exploited, sometimes within hours of release. I'm certain that someone would find an exploit to disable these stupid things, be it radio frequency jamming or other method. Imagine if all it took was a bad guy carrying a small battery powered jammer that disabled any smart gun within a hundred feet, or a much more powerful jammer sitting in the car parked out front that can massively overpower the weak signal put out by your stupid ring/watch/wristband to unlock your "smart" gun. And I'm going to bet that the ICs used to control a smart gun will be manufactured by a very limited number of suppliers, meaning these exploits could work on a significant portion of the "smart" guns out there. Wouldnt surprise me if exploits were added to the chip logic - such a thing has happened before...

I am wondering what kind of ways there are to remotely disable a "smart" gun which uses biometrics (short of an emp), but I am sure someone will find a way.

Plus, if stolen, I still can't imagine how these would be much different than current guns. Yeah, some work would be needed to get it working, but it seems like itd be pretty easy to simply solder some wires to bypass any controls or add a part to signal the gun was properly unlocked. Electrical signals arent all that complicated, and at some point it comes down to voltage or no voltage present... Wonder how quickly someone will hack a "smart" gun into a full auto pistol. I could get behind that...

If the technology is so good why do we not have it in cars yet?  No need for keys. No stolen or hijacked cars either.  Owner does not have his hand on the wheel it don't work,  See solution looking for a problem again.  It's all about power, period.

I have key less entry in my car. I have the key in my pocket and I just walk up to open the door. MOST of the time it works.

I would never want to trust a smart gun in a life and death situation. The laws will exempt police and that says a lot.

I used to watch the TV show Alias. Watch it and you will never own anything that is bio-metric.

I have a hard enough time using the fingerprint feature on my galaxy S7 edge and it's just to unlock the phone.  I'd be dead if I had to use that bullshit to pull the trigger on one of my guns

wet, dirty or gloved hands...my S7 is a paperweight. so yeah....it's bullshit and so is "smart" gun tech.

Lol, I don't know why, but I feel like the future has failed me every time I have to pull the handle more than once.
