1/2 Hour Range Time- Wanaque/Wayne Area

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm new to shooting and just purchased my first gun, Walther PPQ.

I plan on going relatively often to the range, 2-3 times a month. I don't plan on spending a full hour there per session, so wondering if there are any cheap ranges that are beginner friendly in the area.

bullet hole is an option, though I keep reading they're not very friendly.

Considering RTSP, but finding it hard to shell out $350 for membership. I did have good experiences there and they're very beginner friendly. also 7 am range time for members is awesome.

Any suggestions? Just need a simple/cheap pistol range, that's beginner friendly. Not opposed to membership vs hourly, but trying to save, if possible (guns aren't cheap). The earlier the opening times the better.

Thanks.

RTSP doesn't require membership to shoot... Neither does Gun for Hire.

Bullet Hole can be unfriendly but they're cheap... Bayonne pistol range is still closed I think...

Thanks Nick. I don't need membership, but rtsp is $20 an hour (and doesn't do 1/2 hr) and gun for hire is $25. Pretty steep considering how often I wanna go and the fact I just want to shoot about 1/2 hr per session.

Last resort I may just get a membership at rtsp, but $350 doesn't come easy.

Even if a range did 1/2hr rentals.... how cheap you looking for?

Best dollar value for you...  Cherry Ridge Membership...

I figure if going 3 times a month, $20-$25 adds up quick. I know bullet hole does half hours, so $10 a visit isn't bad. Wasn't sure if any other ranges in the area also offer it.

Cherry ridge looks awesome, just not sure I'd be able to learn/practice in the winter. I may just pay for a few trips at one of the ranges mentioned above and join cherry ridge when the weather breaks.

Thanks.

You'll spend $20 in gas driving all over the state looking to save ten bucks. Focus on buying your ammo cheap. And focus on a range that will allow you to train in an atmosphere that is comfortable for you.

If you can't swing the membership fees, just do Bullet hole. They may not be as warm and cuddly as the other ranges, but I've never had an issue. Even as a former GFH gold member, I'd often do 1/2 hrs at BH when I didn't feel like dealing with weekend crowds.

Am I missing something here? You say bullet hole isn't bad at $10 a 1/2 hour, and you plan on going three time a month, that's $30, times 12 that's $360 a year. RTSP is $350 a year membership and you get the membership bennies of the early start etc...

All of the mentioned are roughly equidistant from me...30 mins. I'm not one of those guys thst drives 10 miles to go to a gas station that's $0.05 cheaper. Lol

I bought about 13 boxes at $10 each, shipped. 10 boxes federal champion and 3 blazer brass. . As far as I could tell that's decent prices for decent ammo.

Im definitely going to check them out. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Your math is spot on. I should have prefaced by saying I'll probably go 3 times a month as I get used to my gun. After that, I'll probably go less (although a good chance I may get hooked )

Either way, BH I get the feedback that it's not welcoming, particularly to rookies like me. Im not an idiot and use common sense and do my research, and i Dont need a red carpet, but don't want to get "scolded" or embarrassed when it's already a new scenario for me. For whatever reason, it's a little awkward for me to show up brand new to this around ppl that have been doing it their whole lives.

Also 10 am is pretty late for me, but my expectations of a perfect range arent realistic so gotta sacrifice something.

I will definitely go and check out BH, and may use it for a while and see how it goes.

I see this going one of 3 ways. Stick with BH, get a RTSP membership, or pay daily range rates till weather breaks and join cherry ridge.

Thanks all

Congrats on the purchase and welcome! If you're new to shooting I suggest taking the NRA basic pistol course offered by both Gun For Hire and RTSP. They will teach you how to disassemble and reassemble your firearm, cleaning and lubrication for proper maintenance, as well as proper grip and stance, and dealing with malfunctions. Those fundamentals will give you a strong base to build on.

never had any bad experiences at the Bullet Hole, been there plenty of times. GFH & RTSP are great, but only been to CR once.

Good to know Thanks.

Thanks Chris. I took the NRA course a few years ago and have Basic Pistol certification. I planned on getting a gun back then, but never happened. didn't shoot in a few years. Then Went to RTSP a few times to rent some guns and decided to get one and here I am.

I'm comfortable with my knowledge in terms of safety and I'm confident handling guns. Just need to practice at this point

In that case, blast on. As already mentioned, Cherry Ridge is a fantastic value. I'm unsure of any place aside from the Bullet Hole that rent for a half hour. It's not a terrible place to shoot. Some range officers get pissy if you're aiming for headshots and if your rate of fire is too high. Take your time and shoot safely. Nobody will bother you. I started shooting there as a new shooter. They have the range rules posted at each port, and if you have a question ask a range officer.

Went to bullet hole last week.

Was very pleased. Place is a not exactly nice and crappy compared to RTSP, but I went there to shoot.

People were friendly enough and didn't bother me or my friend at all.

I'll probably be going here regularly and join Cherry Ridge once it gets warmer.

Thanks for the help.
