Smart Thing?

Recommended Posts

i have a smartthings hub with some motion and leak sensors all tied to my philips hue lighting system. works pretty well. my bathroom and basement lights turn on and off automatically when they detect motion, and at night the bathroom lights are dimmed down to 10% so nobody is disturbed. be prepared for some bugs with the smartthings system though. it's randomly turned every light in my house on at around 3:45am on occasion. also, at least twice now it's received a firmware update that made me have to re-pair every damn sensor again. not fun. still, i'd recommend it

Hey Indiana or others. I'm having a range or interference problem with my detached garage. My Arlo out side works but I can't get the door sensor to work/link. It's about 25' from the house(door sensor) and 10' from the Arlo. My understanding is Zwave networks itself. The more things the more range/less delay.

How are you're ranges?

The only other thing I've found is possible interference with the fluorescent lights.

I'm thinking something different with all this IOT stuff.     My motto is, "only if it truly adds value" to your life."  Do you really need a refrigerator to tell you when you need to order more groceries?  Can you not,  just as easily, open the door and discern that for yourself? Etc. etc. etc.... Do you really need Alexa or Siri to play music or look up stuff? Seriously?

Point being, the more you depend on these IOT devices for things, the more you're in trouble when they break down or or the internet itself goes down.  And, more importantly, the more these devices collect data about you, sending it to collection points where your "profile" is built and maintained.  The fewer devices you own that do that, the less they can collect about you. Yeah, I know, it's happening already with internet browsing, shopping, etc. etc. But why help it along?  If the device truly adds value, if it can do things for you that you can't do on your own, then maybe... you'll have to decide if that value added is worth the cost of your data being captured and profile being built.

I seriously doubt Siri/Alexa will ever see the inside of my residence.... ever!

We are using this for alarm. Right now.

Lights on vacation etc. The lock thing I don't get. You still have to open the door.

One thing that is cool and will happen eventually. When the alarm goes off every light in the house will go on.

Which unit/model do you have?

In re: the Alarm, of course, all the light outlets would have to be connected to the controller for that to happen.  Maybe that might be something that Simplisafe or their equivalents could do quickly.  Simplisafe seems to be working well for me. But it does collect info. It records every time  you turn the alarm on/off, whether or not you are "away" or "at home," and from which device you are operating the alarm. One has to hope the Simplisafe people can be trusted not to use that data to  try and figure out when you aren't home.... :dontknow:

Just the Smart things hub. It's working with iris parts and arlos and soon ge ( or other switch)

Anything z wave or zigbe( I have no idea what that means, do different frequencies I think).

I was gonna go simple safe. Sent it back.

I pay nothing and my wife gets a notification.( she can call 911).

The SmartThings hub cost $75 ish on Amazon.

if you move the door sensors closer to the hub do they work then? are the sensors outside? if they're the samsung smartthings sensors, remember they're designed for indoor use only and temperature might be an issue. i put one on my porch and it wasn't working once temps drop below 30 or so.

I'm going to remove it and bring it inside closer to the hub.
