JimB1 554 Posted January 4, 2017 I am thinking about taking shotgun lessons at M&M hunting preserve on a Sat. Or Sun. but it's almost 2 hours away. I am thinking about staying at a hotel nearby the night before so I can be there fresh first thing in the morning and not have to deal with the stress of rushing around and dealing with traffic first thing in the morning. Anything I need to know about staying in a hotel with a long gun? Thanks -Jim

Leave it in your car overnight. When was the last time your car was broken into in a parking lot? 4. Sleep in your car with the gun 5. Drive to the danged venue like a grown-ass man and save $125, which you can use for extra training.

Newtonian 453 Posted January 4, 2017 Hey thanks for the useless response, anyone else care to give me real advise? -Jim 1-3 and 5 were useless responses to your lame question? You're serious that your only option is staying in a hotel? In that case you could also: 6. Melt the gun down to make legal paper clips, then re-forge into gun parts the next day. 7. Have it FedExed to the range beforehand. 8. Leave the gun at home then act surprised when the instructor asks you to get your firearm 9. Stuff it where the moon don't shine to hide it from prying eyes
Malsua 1,422 Posted January 4, 2017 You didn't mention if you have a Firearms Purchaser ID, if not, drive the same day. I leave long guns in the trunk when I'm at hotels in other states and bring the pistols into the room.

JimB1 554 Posted January 4, 2017 1-3 is solid advice this signature exceeds the 15 character capacity count Yeah, sort of... 1. Like anyone is going to walk into a hotel with an uncased shotgun in their hands? What could possibly go wrong? 2. it goes in a case with the barrel removed anyway so what kind of taking apart are we talking about? 3. Leave it in the car might actually be Ok, not sure on this one but not sure of the laws on it which is part of the question. Then there are these: 4. Yeah, cops love to see people sleeping in their cars with weapons. 5. not even going to comment, snarky BS answer that has no value to the question. I apologize Newtonian if you are just joking around and I am taking it wrong. That happens .... -Jim

Allow enough time to stop for A decent breakfast, Cracker Barrel is just A few miles from M&M. Go shoot with Anthony, Enjoy and take as much away as you can.

I never said staying at a hotel is my only option, it's just a convienent one when I'll be outside all day and don't feel like driving for a couple of hours before it. Far as it being a lame question, sorry you think so, but no one said you had to respond to questions you think are lame so have a nice day and thanks for playing. -Jim
kirk2022 43 Posted January 4, 2017 Or all according to what you want to spend to stay over, You can call M&M and get A room in their lodge on site.

Most people on here forget more during breakfast than I know. That's why when I ask lame questions (which I often do) and people are kind enough to respond with minimal editorial eye-rolling I'm usually genial enough not to reward them with snark. If you can easily take it down and case it then WTF are you asking, really? If people will report you for carrying a 20-inch long object into your room? Whether you should get FBI clearance or a U.N. resolution? You either leave the damn gun in the car, bring it to your room in some shape, manner, or form, or drive direct from home. Or you can stick it up your ass and pretend you have three legs.

I am just asking if there are any NJ weirdness to having a long gun overnight in a hotel (or a car since you brought up that option) since I've never done it and NJ has a lot of stupid rules. Not sure what your deal is but you know what, I'm willing to apologize again for a snarky response on my part to your first post and I even still hope you have a good day Your choice if you choose to accept it or not... -Jim
Mr.Stu 1,916 Posted January 4, 2017 Jim, If you have an FPID you can put it in your car today, unloaded of course, and drive around with it until you get to your shoot. Just avoid schools and government buildings. To answer your question, there is nothing special regarding hotels in the law. If you don't have an FPID, you're SOL and have to drive directly to/from your residence and the range as you will be relying on a transportation exemption.
Newtonian 453 Posted January 4, 2017 Apology bordering on passive-aggressive snark accepted. You have a long, long way to go before getting on my shit list. Don't forget to dress warmly. You could catch something being outside all day in January. That would make me sad! Stu: Don't exemptions only apply to handguns?

Need to get all the basics down first. Mr.Stu 1,916 Posted January 4, 2017 Stu: Don't exemptions only apply to handguns? If you don't have an FPID the exemptions apply to any firearms, long guns or hand guns. From memory it goes something like this. Stop worrying when you find the first rule that makes you legal: FOR LONG GUNS: You can't have a gun so don't have a gun. Except if you have an FPID. Except at your home, place of business (if you own the business), range, gun store or place of repair (gunsmith with FFL & NJ State license) Except if you're traveling directly between exempt locations (see above) FOR HANDGUNS: You can't have a gun so don't have a gun. Except if you have a carry permit (rocking horse excrement so we all rely on exemptions) Except at your home, place of business (if you own the business), range, gun store or place of repair (gunsmith with FFL & NJ State license) Except if you're traveling directly between exempt locations (see above)

Buns of Guns 7 Posted January 4, 2017 There are very few locations in NJ in which it's illegal for an FID holder to possess an unloaded rifle or shotgun (mostly schools IIRC). Having experienced two vehicle break-ins, I would personally feel more comfortable taking it up to the hotel room. weekend_junkie 129 Posted January 4, 2017 6. Melt the gun down to make legal paper clips, then re-forge into gun parts the next day.ILLEGAL! This would be considered manufacturing, which requires the requisite 07 FFL in NJ. 9. Stuff it where the moon don't shine to hide it from prying eyesTotally fine. NJ reversed its sodomy laws back in 1978. Just make sure the chamber is unloaded before you, uhh, "load your chamber". If it fits, you may be in violation of possessing a SBS. If not... well... I'm still not judging.
mipafox 438 Posted January 4, 2017 You can take it in the room but on your way in you need to go on the balcony and fire off both barrels into the air like Joe Biden.
JohnnyB 4,322 Posted January 5, 2017 As rightly stated earlier with the NJ FPID card, you can carry an unloaded rifle or shotgun in your trunk all the time. Just don't go onto a school's property.
