What to do with a garbage barrel...

Recommended Posts

A while back I bought a 20 inch Hbar in .223 Wylde for a SPR build. Ended up finally getting around to build it (after over a year), except the barrel is shooting absolutely horrible groups. After some experimenting, it was determined the barrel is garbage. Is there anything that can be done with it besides keeping it next to my work bench as a club (joking)? I read somewhere it was possible to recut the barrel as a larger caliber. Is this true, and is it cost effective to do something like this?

if it is trashed, maybe you could consider getting the barrel chopped down and re-profiled to another desired length.  14.5-16" for CQB type distance?  maybe it's still usable in a different config.  could be a fun project

I don't know the maker, I don't even remember where I bought it. I believe I bought it the last time I was at Oak's from some random table. Regardless, it's a 20" fluted Hbar in .223 Wylde, target crowned that shoots groups from a lead sled of 2-3 FEET at 100 yards. I looked through the barrel and don't see any knicks, gouges, burrs, or dings, but at this point, I'm just frustrated and done with it. Was just curious what I could do with it.

Hang it up over your work bench as a reminder of what not to do in the future.

Do you know the twist rate?  What bullets are you using?

Have you also checked your optics or your sights are tight?  I have done that once where the optic was moving all over the place cause I forgot to torque it down to spec.

When you look through the barrel can you see any spiral shaped grooves? With "groups" that big it may be a smooth bore.

I see the lands and grooves, they're there. If I remember when I get home, I'll post a pic.

Kinda hard to see

it's a 1x8, and I tried everything from PMC X-tac to Rem .223 to green tips. I thought the scope was the issue initially, but I switched both the mount (now a Burris PEPR) and the scope (now a Nikon Buckmaster 2), lapped the mount rings and blue locktite-d everything down, still getting garbage groups. I literally just put a new barrel on it this morning (a 18" stainless 1x8 twist match .223 wylde barrel that is guaranteed to shoot sub 1 moa, or my money back) and plan to go shoot it Sat morning before work to test it. Being that the barrel was essentially the last thing to try replacing, we shall see how it goes.

Wait, you're telling me that isn't good? My range neighbors always seem so impressed I can keep my targets clean (and reusable!) while showing off my accuracy on their targets. I'm told like all the time that I must be a sniper or mall ninja (don't get what a ninja has to do with guns, dumbasses don't know ninjas use swords?), but I'm always glad to show off my skills.
