Movie Rental Recommendation: All is Lost

Recommended Posts

Have you seen it? Came out several years back, but somehow I missed its release and in the years since. I just caught it on cable (while home procrastinating.... er, working, I mean. Yeah, I'm working). I give the film an enthusiastic "2 Thumbs Up".

"All is Lost" stars Robert Redford as a retiree sailing solo across the Indian ocean. His sailboat is hit by a floating shipping container and sustains serious damage. The entire rest of the film focuses intently on his quiet, gritty and increasingly desperate struggle to survive on the ocean as one thing after another goes wrong. Again, it's quite literally a quiet film w/almost zero dialog, no musical score, and it's not fast-paced either. So, if you're a hardcore action film buff who likes car chases and loud explosions, it may not be your cup of tea... but I personally found it to be riveting and Redford was terrific. It's rentable on Amazon... I'm guessing on Netflix too. Or you might try to catch it on the Audience cable channel.

Now, back to my proc...work!

Robert Redford is on my ban list. He thinks it's sad that we have gun ownership rights

Seriously?! Wow, I didn't know that. The guy that acted so brilliantly as plucky mountain man Jeremiah Johnson doesn't like guns, huh? Irony noted.

If you apply that ban consistently though, you'll be banning... what?... like 90% of Hollywood films? Because that attitude is rampant in Hollywood. I like movies too much, but I respect your right to boycott it if you so choose.

Interesting movie! Yes I enjoyed it.

Probably the most yumongous crock of hypocrosy going is all the hollywood stars making a living on the screen with guns yet preach off camera how bad they are. Especialy lil Bobby Redford. Tough to watch movies these days without thinking about that.....

As I wrote that, I thought - I give it 2 hours before someone makes a wiseass response.  I should have figured it would be you, Zeke. Now... knock it off. Show a little respect for the unrequited love I hold for the uber-tasty Mr. Depp... LMAO!!!

Redford's character in Captain America: Winter Soldier was an evil "gov't control everything" guy who wanted to use flying aircraft carriers to kill people by the millions who opposed their authoritarian regime. Sounds like an easy role for him.

I'll watch anything with Chris Pratt.

http://conservativetribune.com/17-celebrities-pro-gun/

And

http://gunssavelives.net/blog/11-pro-gun-celebrities-yes-they-do-exist/

Oddly Vince Vaughan is missing from these list's.

Surprisingly Whoopi Goldberg is an NRA member?

Jhonny Depp?

I wonder, though, how many of these Hollyweird folks say they are anti 2a "in public"  (but may not be in private) in order to keep working and not be "black listed" by the industry. Most of those who are pro-2A publicly would seem to have enough sustaining power in the industry to withstand any backlash.

Yes, Whoopi is pro-2A.    Believe it or not, Rachel Maddow also shoots at ranges, etc., but she's  not exactly pro-2A. She's more like a "guns for me but not for thee..." type of person. She doesn't believe in personal ownership of firearms. We should only be allowed to shoot rented firearms at ranges, etc.

I concur with those calling out the hypocrisy of stars who make money with guns and yet denounce them in their private life.  Of course, they'll say "It's the writer's fault... I'm just acting...."

I'm not sure, though if I'm ready to boycott any of them, at this point. If I did that, I'd not have very many entertainment choices. I'll boycott the ones whose acting I don't like. :D

Yep, quite a long list of entertainers in my household!  Apparently they don't want my family's business.

Owning "a gun" for self defense after death threats doesn't make you pro 2A. Simply means your not a complete moron.

Johny Depp is the only modern actor on my ban list. His comments after 9-11 placed him on it. I believe he also now lives mostly in France. He's no supporter of America or the 2A IMHO.

I haven't watched a Depp movie since Johnie Broscoe. Not missimg much I'm sure.

Sounds like a rough movie.

Try renting "The Road." It's similar but a real pick-me-up. "feel good movie of the year"

Ha ha, look at this :D

From an IMDB review

"Depressing and pointless (which I suppose is the point, but)

1/10

Author: missnobody717 from United States

12 December 2009

When my husband and I went to see this movie, we chose it purely because a) it wasn't one of the ridiculous movies already out, and b) it got a good rating on Rotten Tomatoes. At the snack counter, a poster proclaimed, "One of the most uplifting and optimistic movies of the year!"

After watching that movie, we concluded that the poster reviewer either was completely high, wandered into the wrong theater by mistake, or thinks that Schindler's List was a wacky comedy. The Road has to be one of the most depressing, pointless, excruciating movies you could ever see. It will make you want to go home and stick your head in the oven."

Ha ha ha ha! :D

I left out the rest of the review because of spoilers, but it's almost as good as the movie :)

You should still see it.

Remixer - I'm well aware of the plethora of unsafe morons waiting to win a Darwinism award who own guns.

My comment is directed at hollywood stars such as Johnny "I live in Paris" Depp. The ones who may own a gun or two but don't think EVERYONE should be able to own one or (gasp) carry one out in public for protection. Or owns guns but thinks "assault rifles" and "large capacity" magazines are best reserved for LEO / military.

Owning a firarm doesn't make a person a 2A supporter. Hell, there are plenty of people who own many shotguns and hunting rifles but will argue that semi automatic pistols and rifles with "large capacity" mags shouldn't be owned by anyone.

But I digress and don't want to see this thread thrown into the kitty litty box. I apologize for going off topic.
