Oshawa man shoots himself while making necklace from bullet

"Durham regional police say a 50-year-old Oshawa man tried to pull apart a bullet with pliers around 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

They say the powder inside the bullet ignited, which caused an explosion and propelled the bullet into the man’s thigh."

So I thought that a cartridge fired without a barrel would kind of fizzle rather than propel itself with any real force. I guess he could have had the bullet resting on his leg.

"Police say the man was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery to remove the bullet and shell casing fragments from his leg."

Where did the shell fragments come from? I guess I don't believe what I read anymore but who knows what happened.

I like the last line:

"Police are reminding residents not to manipulate ammunition."

This kinda thing also just happened semi recently in another state, when a guy thought it was a good idea to hit a round that he found on his lawn with a hammer. It ignited, went off, and ended up hitting him with enough force that it pierced his skin. It also happened in 2007, when a teenager accidentally shot himself in the face by hitting a round with a hammer. The force is significantly less than when it has a barrel to direct the pressures, but can still potentially cause injury or death.

A couple of my coworkers insist they witnessed a 9mm round roll off one of the desks at work while they were issuing an officer a weapon, land perfectly on its primer causing it to go off, and penetrate the drywall next to the desk a couple inches off the ground. There's still a hole there, whether or not that's actually what it's from, I don't know.

So call me a disbeliever but I don't believe they actually hit the barn or tree (at least not by hitting the cartidge). I guess the .22 might not have enough energy to destroy the case?

Here is a little more reliable video. Now I see where the brass fragments came from but still wonder about the bullet itself. Maybe he just got "lucky".

I was going to reference that  hickok video too. In that video there is enough force to rattle the pot. No hole, but dents inside the pot.  Is that enough to piece thigh at close range ?

What I know is, one of the ranges I shoot at doesn't have a system for bad round disposal.

If I find a struck round on the ground, or in the rare case of one on my rounds being struck and not firing, I use my leatherman to pull the bullet out, dump the powder, hoping to not be leaving a hazard around for someone else.

Funny thing, the other range I shoot at has a pipe out of the ground to drop your bad rounds into (what I had always presumed to be a collection barrel under the ground). Short time ago, I picked up two struck but unfired bullets off the ground to put them in the pipe, only to find the pipe filled so high I couldn't fit the two rounds in there...

I'll continue to pull the bullets apart with my leatherman to eliminate any hazard, think it's a safe practice?
