Fuel oil

Recommended Posts

Two days ago our fuel oil company, Hart & Iliff, refused to deliver because our "property is like a ski slope." It was snow, just snow, not ice. I shoveled it. I walked in it. I'm an old fart and I didn't melt like the Wicked Witch. We also have a 20 foot wide drive between us and our neighbor's where they could have parked the truck but the driver claimed it was too slippery, which is total BS. It was plowed and clean.

Plus despite having a service contract they charge us for everything.

So I am looking for a new oil company that serves Outer Newtonia. Preferably local, with service. I don't think we can do worse with H&I's prices either.

Been using Bonded Oil all winter and I find the prices and service to be very good. Although they don't have actual HVAC service. I just checked and thier price per gallon is 1.93 for 200+ gallons.

I prefer to just buy it when I need it since we started running a wood stove last month.

Liberty Discount Fuel Oil Co. Delivers to all Sussex, Warren, Morris and Hunterdon.  Fuel Oil only. You schedule on your timeline not theirs.  I order when I am low and the weather is with us.  I use a different company to service the boiler, works better that way.

Another option is Fuel Rite out of Blairstown. They are a full service vendor.

Isn't there bus stops advertising Hackettstown Oil in the Newton area? Most around me use them.

H'town Oil is in fact filling my tank on Monday as a one-time deal and very nice gesture on their part. They do not provide service, however, so as I explained to them it's only a one-time deal.

We've only had one heating emergency in 27 years, due to an empty tank. Hart & Iliff claimed they didn't know we switched from an in-ground 1000-gallon tank to a basement 275 gallon setup. Yet 6 months earlier they insisted on "inspecting" the new installation. That's right they were here, yukking it up with the installer for a good hour, then claimed they didn't know about it. The bastards then tried to charge us some outrageous fee for a Sunday call, which I refused to pay.

Definitely time to lose these jerks. Thanks to all for the tips.

The owner of Hackettstown oil is a good friend of mine. He will deliver in any conditions. I get most of my work from them. (Oil burner service, and installation, is my main professional specialty) If you go to their website for service companies mine is listed there in the top 5. Chris is a great guy as well as his brother Nick. I don't mind giving them my money at all. If you order online with them there's a $0.10 per gallon discount. Take advantage of that. They will also price match anyone out there.

Thanks guys. I really do need local service though. H&I were pretty good the first 20 years we were here. They'd come out, check out our problem, not charge. With what the trades bill for stepping onto your property doesn't make sense to save 10 cents per gallon and then get charged $250 to have someone come over to adjust a valve then leave. H&I also do a yearly maintenance visit. Problem is they now charge for everything, plus the service contract. Plus the delivery guy is a lazy lying bullshit artist. Same with my father's company, Metro Oil. He pays a couple of hundred for the contract, then they charge him $140 to come out to flush a feed line. In my next life I'm giving up the test tubes for a tool belt.

I charge $160 + material for an annual tune up and cleaning. With a computerized combustion analysis. Usually about $200 for the average unit total. But yeah a regular service call is $125 per hour. $200 per hour nights and weekends. I don't write service contracts, because I don't own an oil company. Most large companies that sell oil, and have service guys, just use it as a write off. I make my living only doing service. But I bet I set up your equipment at a much more efficient rate than an oil company will. It's in their best interest for you to burn more. Kinda like letting the fox watch your hen house, so to speak...

I have to crunch some numbers and make some calls.

Like I said in my next life...
