Insulating garage

Recommended Posts

It is recent. 2014 I'm guessing. All outlets in "living" spaces must be on arc fault breakers.

I know that during my 2012 construction, they were included in the 2011 NEC for bedrooms, bathrooms and living spaces.   That said, they weren't enforcing it so the electrician put GFCI and regular where he could.

I'd add, get some insulation quotes, you be surprised that you can get it installed for what you can buy it for from depot or blows.

Seriously

True. Way back when I built/renovated my house it was one of a few things I didnt do myself. Turned out for like $200 more than what I could have got it for a insul guy did it and it was a lot of walls, ceilings and crawlspaces. No brainer and a lot faster. Of course I went around afterwards doing qc....

Awesome I get quotes for both types from some people. Drywall luckily someone in family does for living so he will do that for me, and painting I'll do.

I want to plan everything out on what I was out in garage far as electrical. Might even have another panel put in because I need to add more outlets in basement for that lovely project lol

I did spray foam & pink in my garage.  https://sprayfoamkit.com/ I got a kit from those guys. Follow the directions if you DIY. Temperature has to be just right to achieve maximum yield. It's a pain to do the ceiling. Get a spare pair of goggles and wear a Tyvek suit. The droplets that fall stick to everything. Put down drop clothes and move EVERYTHING out of the garage. I'm still scraping foam off stuff. Wear a respirator too. Even though it's a lower VOC product, it still stinks and will give you a headache, therefore wear a respirator.

It's absolutely ridiculous. And unnecessary. But then again, like the NEC, it's all about making money and not safety.

Not true. Outlets in all living spaces have to be either GFI protected or on a GFI breaker.

Not sure you are right there.  I am looking at NFPA 70 Section 210.8(A) and it makes no mention of "all living space"

210.8 Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection for
Personnel. Ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for
personnel shall be provided as required in 210.8(A) through
(D). The ground-fault circuit-interrupter shall be installed in
a readily accessible location.
Informational Note: See 215.9 for ground-fault circuitinterrupter
protection for personnel on feeders.
(A) Dwelling Units. All 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and
20-ampere receptacles installed in the locations specified in
210.8(A)(1) through (10) shall have ground-fault circuitinterrupter
protection for personnel.
(1) Bathrooms
(2) Garages, and also accessory buildings that have a
floor located at or below grade level not intended as
habitable rooms and limited to storage areas, work
areas, and areas of similar use
(3) Outdoors
Exception to (3): Receptacles that are not readily accessible
and are supplied by a branch circuit dedicated to
electric snow-melting, deicing, or pipeline and vessel heating
equipment shall be permitted to be installed in accordance
with 426.28 or 427.22, as applicable.
(4) Crawl spaces — at or below grade level
(5) Unfinished basements — for purposes of this section,
unfinished basements are defined as portions or areas
of the basement not intended as habitable rooms and
limited to storage areas, work areas, and the like
Exception to (5): A receptacle supplying only a permanently
installed fire alarm or burglar alarm system shall
not be required to have ground-fault circuit-interrupter
protection.
Informational Note: See 760.41(B) and 760.121(B) for
power supply requirements for fire alarm systems.
Receptacles installed under the exception to
210.8(A)(5) shall not be considered as meeting the
requirements of 210.52(G)
(6) Kitchens — where the receptacles are installed to
serve the countertop surfaces
(7) Sinks — where receptacles are installed within 1.8 m
(6 ft) of the outside edge of the sink
(8) Boathouses
(9) Bathtubs or shower stalls — where receptacles are
installed within 1.8 m (6 ft) of the outside edge of the
bathtub or shower stall
(10) Laundry areas

The list is comprehensive to be sure, but no mentions of bedrooms, closets or living rooms.  So not "all living areas"

I will be adding more electrical outlets to the garage and to the exterior as well. I will probably add some outlets to the walls that already have the drywall up.

Garage is a 2 car garage, can't fit my lifted truck in it so it's a parking spot for the lovely lady. Plan to have my tool boxes and maybe a work area in garage. Basement will have the big boy safe and gun room :).

I think as of right now I will not heat the garage but that may change in future.

Going check out some spray foam installers to get quotes, anyone recommend anyone in the south jersey area?

I've dealt with these guys a few times. We are building a three car garage this fall and they will be doing that one as well.
