TrentonShooter 22 Posted April 3, 2017 I'm looking to buy my second handgun in a couple of weeks. I own a Springfield XD9 MOD 2.0 right now. My first choice of pistol was gonna be the Walther P99 9mm. I wasn't able to find one when I was buying so I went with the XD9. Now since I got a 9mm, the next pistol I want it in the .40s&w caliber. I do know a place that has the P99 in .40 but I also been looking into the Glock 35 and would like people who own either gun, or both, to let me know which one is a better shooting gun and why. I'm just a recreational shooter no competition anything just love to go out to the range and shoot. Kind of new to shooting too.
TrentonShooter 22 Posted April 4, 2017 Why .40?I don't want to buy the P99 on 9mm so I wanna go with the .40 which I have readily available at one of the local Gun Shop. Plus I wanna try or buy at least all kind of calibers to see what's right for me.
45Doll 5,842 Posted April 4, 2017 I get the 'try or buy at least all kind of calibers' since I have been down that road. The P99 in 9mm with the AS trigger is one of the top five handguns I shoot as far as accuracy is concerned. It probably would shoot as well in .40. FYI, since I have been down the multi-caliber road, now I only buy 9mm and .45 ACP pistols. I still have .40s, and won't discard them, because who knows? Sometimes .40 ammo has been readily available when other calibers haven't. But as far as defensive performance is concerned I no longer see a particular advantage to .40. But hey, we shoot for fun too. Don't we?
Bklynracer 1,259 Posted April 4, 2017 Just a thought. Why not go to a range and try / rent the calibers before you spend your money on something you don't like. You might not like the .40 and might really like the .45. It's a few dollars more but at least you might not buy Something you might not enjoy and sell it for less then you paid. Ray Ray 3,566 Posted April 4, 2017 40 S&W is getting less and less popular. Hopefully that means ammo prices will drop. Just to give me an excuse to buy one.

The guns I have already I have tried before in the range. Both these guns are not available at the ranges around my way. That why I'm trying to get input from other that may have experience. I don't want to buy the P99 in the 9mm but if I could get my hands on one I might change my mind. Everywhere I have gone to asking about the 9mm they tell me is not available and Walthers haven't manufactured a batch ina while.
Screwball 483 Posted April 4, 2017 You really can't say the Walther or Glock is a better gun... comes down to personal preference. The .40 is a adequate round. 9mm is cheaper, .45 is more expensive... but all three are very close in performance for pistol calibers. I mean by that is they all are underpowered compared to a rifle/shotgun. Shooting the .40 out of a rifle, you roughly gain another 150 feet per second in velocity. My .40 guns are M&Ps, being I liked the design. I do have a conversion slide for my Beretta 92, but rarely use it. I also got a SUB-2000 that takes the same magazines as my M&P... in .40. I'm sure neither option you have will give you problems. Glock has A LOT of aftermarket, so if you want to change something, it can be done. Holsters and other gear are available for it. If you asked me which I would get, it would probably be the Glock. If it was the PPQ, I'd be more mindful to give it a look, but I'm not a huge fan of the P99.
carl_g 568 Posted April 4, 2017 What about a PPQ in 45acp?
Schrödinger's cat 87 Posted April 4, 2017 Dajonga has a pretty amazing price on his Glock 35 in the marketplace.
TrentonShooter 22 Posted April 5, 2017 Thank you all for your input. I really wanted that P99 9mm. Did consider getting it in .40 but I went to one of my local Gun Shops and checked out the Glock 35, the P99 .40, and since you guys suggested it, the PPQ but in 9mm. After handling all of them I ended up going with the PPQ 9mm with the 5 inch barrel even though it was a bit more expensive than the others. Love the way it felt in my hand better than the Glock or the other Walther. Of course I can't pick it up yet since I gotta wait 12 more days to officially purchase it(30 day Handgun restriction) but soon I'll be having some fun with it. Again thanks for all the input and opinions !

Again thanks for all the input and opinions ! You won't be disappointed! I have the M1 version, but my wife has the 5" M2 and loves it. One thing I noticed is that they ported the slide (but not the barrel) so the 5" weighs the same as the 4" and is not front heavy. And a wonderful trigger. Definitely competition for the P99. Enjoy!
