Winchester U.S.A. forged 9mm

Recommended Posts

Picked a box up at Walmart yesterday for around .19 a round. Its steel cased and made in the U.S.. reviews on line are all over the place....it seems to shoot good but its very dirty. For me as long as it cycles i'm good...I clean the gun after every session any way. Just wondering if anybody has used it and what your opinons are. Thanks!

I shot 500 rounds of Wichester 124 gr. ammo and I had roughly 6 bad rounds. 3 would not chamber. I got one of them to chamber in my Glock, but my HK wasn't having it. The other 3 rounds jammed my Glock up after they fed. The rounds would almost chamber, but the gun would be slightly out of battery. It was tough to get the slide back, but once I did, I saw that the case was peeled back from the mouth, probably during feeding.

This was the first issue I had with Winchester, not that I particularly shoot it a lot, but I am avoiding them for all future ammo purchases.

I use the Winchester white box in my G21 and G19 often and without issues. I have just never shot anything but brass and was curious about others experiences with the steel case Winchester.

Sorry, no experience with the steel.

Amazingly, it's way worse than Tula or Wolf. I bought a box of 9mm in Walmart during the Easter break and it wasn't reliable in my VP9. I'll stick with Tula for range plinking.

Worse than the older CCI or PMC Blazer aluminum cased stuff?

How much cheaper is this ammo?

One issue with such ammo is that the case does not form as good a seal as brass, thus lower power, more FTE and fail to cycles overall.

While I never had an issue with Wolf (when I bought it), I did find Winchester WB to be quite dirty.  More than that, I still vividly recall an incident with Mike Hughes (top shooter, was on Top Shot), rushed to a USPSA match, bought some WWB ammo at Wally before the match... a few rounds in, round is stuck in the gun.

Turns out... some of the ammo that was made did not have flash holes in the brass, thus when the primer went off, it just lodged the round in the chamber.

I shot about 100 rounds of those once before. It was maybe 2012 when 9mm shot way up in price and I decided to give the cheap steel cases a try. I was just punching holes through paper and don't recall any significant changes in my groups. 1 FTE and as you mentioned extremely dirty. I clean after every session as well and it took me much longer. Youll be surprised at how much more dirty your gun will be.

Maks you were never one to drop names...LOL

It was straight from Mike who ended up pulling the bullet.  Winchester even did a small recall for it IIRC.  But the entire round got lodged in the barrel and took about 15 mins of hammering the slide to get it to open..... all during a USPSA match.... so you can't quite exactly just pack the gun in a case. My RO/rulebook sure kicked in there. lol.  The primer did go off, nothing else happened.

.... and here you go.  All from that timeframe.

Didn't read your links but YES, I say Yes I can see this happening.

To be technical the gun was locked in battery, the primer detonated (yes the detonate not burn) driving the whole cartridge

down the barrel and jamming the mouth of the cartridge past the headspace shoulder into the little freebore that 9mm pistols have.

My mistake you said it drove the cartridge down the barrel I  read incorrectly the bullet.

My bad you're right.  That is a reasonable senario

Still wondering how Winchester let that happen.

Easy.  In big corporations focus groups are created to effect cost savings.

I have seen groups receive cost savings awards for picking up empty ChapStik containers off the floor and putting them back on the conveyor belt.

That being said...Simply cost over QC

Reason number 589 for reloading.... you know the flash hole is there. =P

I think there are way more issues with reloaded ammo than there are with standard ammo.
