I think all points made here have merit. And as I always say, finding the right balance is key. And this is why I tell people, be very sure you want to pursue LR shooting because its a fairly deep rabbit hole. But somewhat in the same vein of 10x's point, it dont matter if you give me Tiger Woods personal golf clubs, its not going to improve MY game at all. So you have to put in the work. So everyone has to weigh their own resources and find that balance accordingly. If you spend so much on equipment you cant afford the club membership to practice, it wasn't a good balance. Most equipment has standouts at certain price points. Bully I think you have hit on two. The PST was a good value at its price point and I think you have landed there again on the NF at the next tier up. But Im sure you could give Shannon Kay a stock Tika and a bushnell (solid performing entry level pieces) and he would kick my ass all day long no matter what I had. But all variables weighed and considered, buying the best you can afford within reason and balance seems to end up being a better deal as there is so much false economics in inferior equipment. Good discussion gents!

Construction, repeatability, and finer details make up some of the difference but the Vortex no nonsense lifetime warranty has value as well. All that and I'll say this: If I can swing another NF, I will. @High Exposure and @Shane45 The last 2 sentences of my summation pretty much mirror your thoughts. If I wasn't competing I would have stuck happily with the Vortex. If it died at the range, I'm a member so no real loss as far as money. Just a bit of fuel and some time. But as someone looking to start competing (if I can ever get a corresponding Sunday lined up) I want any and all advantages I can muster.

I used to buy all sorts of different brands for rifle. After many years I decided to stick with Hornady. I chose Hornady because I like their reloading book. It has lods for all of their bullets. It has simplified my rifle reloading quite a bit.

No remorse or guilt. I'm very happy with my decision and I work hard to buy the things I have. I'm comfortable with it. Just simply making comparisons is all.

I am about to flee for the Jacksonville area as well, but no way am I keeping any property or ties to the socialist people’s republic of New Jermany.

Thanks for the heads up. I just bought more ammo that I don't need. LOL

Let me be the first to welcome you to the Jacksonville area. Hopefully you will be voting the right way to help slow the decay of our state.

Other math to weigh is how much would your shooting have improved if you spent the extra $1000 on practice ammo instead of glass. That's not an easy question to answer, and I'm certainly not pretending I know what would have been more beneficial. But when I'm considering an upgrade to something expensive, I always ask myself what I think would happen if I instead put the money towards more practice and more matches.

^^^ This This is where the very important distinction between best value and lowest cost come in to play. It is like the guy that drops $2000 on a rifle and gear, $800 on tuition for a multi day class, $300 for a hotel room for 3 nights, $200 in gas, $100 in food, but buys cheap garbage ammo to save $100 and ends up missing half the class because the cheap ammo makes his gun puke. I’ve seen it happen multiple times. All that time and money wasted, in an effort to pinch a last penny. I think you will find that extra $1000 for the Night Force worth every cent after using it for a year.
  12. 1 point
Ahhh but glass quality is but a single category right? Weigh this math. What is the cost of all the money spent on train up for a match, the match itself, travel, lodging, time off etc etc etc. Now all mechanical devices can fail. But do you feel more confident you wont have a tracking issue at the worst time with the Vortex or the NF? To me that added safeguard, to not waste all that expense, alone is worth the scope price differential. And I probably would have recommended keeping the Vortex as a backup scope if competing is you pursuit. But hey, I fully understand we all need to close our wallet at some point!

Nobody is judging the 7yo. I am 100% judging the woke of her mother that put the kid up to this for 5 minutes of instagram/twiter fame. That's for the mother's fame, just to clarify. It's sad when parents get the kids to fight their battles by proxy. Come on Zeke, read the twiter link and tell you don't see what's going on here.

So a link shows up in my Inbox today, with this headline: This seven-year-old was the sole student at her school to take part in a national US walkout It recounts the story of the brave girl who was the only person in her entire school to walk out in protest Friday. She spoke of how very alone she felt, and how she couldn't understand why no one else was with her. That is, apart from a photographer, and someone live tweeting the event, but they weren't mentioned in the narrative, only what a brave little activist she is. OK, maybe she believed in the walkout, and if so, kudos to her for speaking her mind by voting with her feet. But, shouldn't the headline have read: "Students at DC school overwhelmingly reject National School Walkout"? It says a lot that there was no mention of the 99.9%+ who didn't support the walkout.

The last time New Jersey had a conservative governor was 1944. And he was a Democrat! The People's Republic of New Jersey idiocracy is on Medicare and Social Security and headed for the nursing home. Voters think that they will get screwed no matter who wins. Are they wrong? It mainly seems to be a difference in the degree and method of screwing. So why bother? Just this morning I was thinking about buying a Mar-a-Bob-O in Florida, for all but the really hot months. (My business is portable because it's on a computer.) Seems to make much more sense than upgrading my taxes by buying a bigger house here in the People's Republic. I can buy the bigger house, keep the New Jersey house for the hot summer months, and pay less in net taxes. Am I missing something? My heirs can then worry about what to do with the New Jersey house. (My wife said, "But, but, what about healthcare?" I noted that the Mayo Clinic has an operation in Jacksonville.) It's a 13 1/2 hour drive from here at the Jersey Shore to Jacksonville.

I used Magtech alluminum cases there a loooong time ago at the shit (bullet) hole and they had no issues. Went back a month or so later, no go. It has nothing to do with the backstop, it has everything to do with making money off of your brass. Go to GFH, or Long Shot.

If you're exclusively punching paper with your .308, start with a 168gr HPBT (Sierra or Hornady or Nosler would be my personal first choices) and see which your rifle likes best given the choice of powders (I like Varget, myself) you have. If you're going to be taking animals out of circulation, I'll leave you to the hunters in this crowd to suggest the proper projectiles and powders to choose from.

Actually, it was all trees, brush, scrubby crap, etc. We could hardly walk through it. It would have taken a Bobcat, chain saws and a bunch of Mexicans to try and clear areas to make shooting lanes and target areas.

There is a Sicilian saying my father used to say to me when I was a kid. I cant remember it in Sicilian, not that it really matters, but it basically goes. "Prepare for winter"

Why don't you two just make love in the woods at that rest stop and get it over with. Believe it or not there are way more dumb ass threads on here than this one... like all the plumbing ones...

If you read further down, you would see I asked about leasing land. Maybe this guy... I've seen many offers to lease land, just not in the geographical area I'm interested in. I actually looked at land for lease in Burlington County last year, but didn't take it, due to the amount of improvements we would need to make to it for a range.

I recently went through this. Price quote to remove a 500gal legally abandoned underground oil tank was 1600 bucks. Partially under concrete sidewalk.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Definitely this Can't tell you how many times I've read, on this forum and others, of someone springing for the extra bucks for a Performance Center revolver because of the "tuned" trigger. Balderdash. Buy the gun because you like the gun, not because of the items mentioned in Alec's post - they can all be easily changed. Adios, Pizza Bob

Some people have tried cashing out of their recalled ones which is great as there are good deals to be had now. He snagged one this week for $200 some idiot was cutting loose cause they were scared about the recall. I was very jealous to say the least.

The AG was probably flooded with emails, phone calls and letters from assholes in New Jersey asking if they can carry in his state. He probably didn't even pay attention to it but the big mouths ruined it for the rest of us. Loose lips sink ships

Minor correction. The Patriot is not mine, it is inventory at the shop, Garden State Shooting Center. Mine is the Kraken which is a switch caliber setup. It can go from short action calibers like 308 to long action calibers like +338 Lapua Magnum. I got the 6.5CM and the 300NM caliber conversions. Here is the Patriot at the shop in 6.5cm. It cant switch between short and long action but you can buy pre fit barrels in short action calibers for it.
