Make sure you read to the end, it's a good ending.... A few weeks back, I was driving to work and caught this one at about 6:15am: I sent a link to this video to the email that Riverdale police have on their website, then I left for vacation. When I returned, this was on my phone(I clipped his name off the front of the audio clip): As I was digging through my emails, catching up, I had this in my inbox:(I deleted her name) ---------------------------- <WITHHELD> <*************@yahoo.com> Sun 5/20/2018 12:13 PM To: *******, Mark; You forwarded this message on 5/21/2018 7:20 AM. Dear Mr. ******* My name is **** ****** and I would like to thank you for sending in the video to the Riverdale PD of the accident that happened on Route 23. I believe in guardian angels and you were mine on that day. I would like you to know that you saved me a lot of money because your video showed the officer that I was not at fault. Thank you so much for taking the time to send this in even though it wasn't something you were obligated to do. Again thank you very much. Sincerely **** ******

Ammo is freaking expensive. As such, I try to avoid “ballistic masturbation” as much as possible. That being said, I bring enough ammo to accomplish my shooting objective for that session/day/class. Sometimes that is a specific goal. Usually that goal is self improvement: • Work on improving 25 yard accuracy • Work on manipulations • Work on malfunction reductions • Work on split times or multiple targets • Work on the skills required to pass a specific qualification or test, etc... Sometimes the goal is to coach others: • Turning a new person onto the shooting sports • Working with an experienced shooter to improve - @Mrs. Peel and I worked on shooting cadence and rhythm drills last week Sometimes the goal is just to have fun - like the shotgun meet ups where your just having fun and blasting clays and shooting .22. A lot of times, it’s a some combo of the above. In my opinion, ultimately, you should practice to be better tomorrow than you were yesterday. Without that mindset you are simply turning money into noise - which is OK sometimes, but if that’s the norm it puts quite a strain on your training budget with no personal improvement to show for it. I try to have a plan for what I want to work on before each range trip. Then I go to my training book (when I take a course from another instructor, or find a drill I like I record it in a book and keep a copy with my range stuff) and I find drills that will help me work on that skill set. Then I bring enough ammo to cover my drills plus a little bit more. For a typical 1 hour indoor pistol range session, I grab 2 or 3 drills plus a warm up/cool down (I currently really like the Consistency Drill from Aaron Baruga to start and end my range sessions) and around ~ 200 rounds. That’s ~ 150 rounds for the brought drills, plus ~50 for unplanned events, ie: buddy wants to try my gun, or I am having malfunctions and need to trouble shoot, or my practice on one skill uncovers a deficiency with somethng else and I need to work it. If I don’t need those extra 50 rounds, I try not to shoot them. If I’m bringing a new shooter I double whatever I’m bringing to cover them. If I am shooting longer than an hour, or if I am working on multiple guns, I plan accordingly but in the same manner. If I am taking a course, I bring 50% over what the started course requirements are. Also, keep in mind that there is a point of diminishing returns when practicing or training. You shouldn’t end a typical range session exhausted and shooting like shit. You want to end just past your peak performance. If you continue too far past that point, you are only practice bad technique and sloppy shooting. How you perform at the end will replace any good reps you did earlier and actually degrade what you worked on. Don’t end your session being pissed at your poor performance and feeling down. End on a high note - shooting well and feeing good. Train for success - and remember: Practice does not make perfect. Practice makes permanent. Only proper practice of perfection makes perfect.

Correction. You can only use it when you're with her at the range. Almost sounds like a straw purchase.

Most that go through a huge number of rounds at the range are simply converting dollars to noise. Think about what you are trying to accomplish and do drills to work on those results.

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/rankings/education/prek-12 I'm sure it' possable to find good schools in the south but there are also ALLOT of bad schools that bring down the averages. If we're talking about an overall State and not one specific small region all of the South lacks in education

@Howard not trying to bust your chops but too many people seek out the lightest trigger they find to use as a crutch not an advantage. Swapping out springs and other parts to become a "great shooter" is the wrong way to do it. Now I know none of us here shoots like Jerry Miculek. Some of the "great shooters" on this forum were surprised when they found out Miculek uses extra power springs in his revolvers. 10-12 lb is normal , I guess he uses 14lb or more. This assures the revolver will function as fast as he can pull the trigger. One can outrun the trigger on a revolver if the trigger is too light. One wouldn't think of participating in a triathlon without building up those muscles for running, swimming, and biking. You need to do the same if one wants to be a "great shooter". A "great shooter" can shoot just as well with a 10lb trigger as a 2.5lb trigger. Smooth is much more important than light in a trigger. I guarantee you Miculek's guns have smooth triggers and he can finger wrestle guys a lot bigger than him and win.

It hurts just to look at it! Every boat owner knows how that feels and it seems to continue to happen even when you are careful!

You hit a lot more than I did, for sure. Was still fun, even with all my misses, and was certainly more of a challenge. I'm looking forward to the next meet already...I've missed a bunch and these are always a blast. I've spent more time than I want to admit looking at over/unders (which then morphed to looking at Anschutz rifles) today.

Unless he is a prohibited person, it is nothing like a straw purchase. Jesus, some of you are like a bunch of old farts. You give the kid a hard time because he hasn’t posted much range and shooting type stuff. You told him he’s a new shooter and he should post some questions to get the most from this forum. So, he posts range stuff and you jump all over him, pick him apart on what you think are technicalities. Red or Blue, Baby Boomer, Gen X, or Millennial - it doesn’t fucking matter. He’s a fellow gun owner for Christ’s sake, and a new one at that. Like it or not, that makes him one of us. Knock it off for fuck’s sake. This is a perfect opportunity to mentor a young shooter, but some of you are out for blood so bad you are going to miss the opportunity because you are acting like a bunch of liberal douchebags. We’re supposed to be better than that. Shame on some of you. Eat our own indeed.

Awesome, thank you for the tip! I think I have a few of those (in the wrong colors) from 20 years ago. Speaking of 20 year old lures, I was sad when I lost a 20+ year old jointed Rapala in Round Valley a few days ago. Was having good luck with bass with it...

I usually go through 200-250 rounds when I go handgun shooting. I'll bring 3 or 4 handguns - sometimes I go "platform" shooting (only bring various 1911s, Beretta's or revolvers for example), sometimes it's single caliber, sometimes 1 from column A and 1 from column B, etc. Still about the same number of rounds regardless of what I bring. I practice various target drills and always try to end on a good grouping. I have my favorites and usually bring at least one that I don't shoot as well as the others so I can work on it.

Welcome aboard! Nice to hear we have a shotgun instructor on board. Shotgun has never been my strong suit. Pistol and bolt rifle is where I spend my time, and thats where my spare cash goes.

@Soclydezaand @Malice4you I know this may sound a little crazy but the only lure you need to be a successful trout fisherman in New Jersey is a Panther Martin. Goldblade black body in various different sizes. yes there are plenty of other lures that will catch fish but believe it or not that is the lures I use 99.9% of the time while fishing for trout. https://goo.gl/images/4VHmjp

Today I went and shot 20 rounds. I was gathering data to find an accuracy node. Sometimes I'll go and shoot 100 (that's a lot for me). I've shot more in a class. But 100 is a bunch. My neck, shoulders, back and eyes get tired. That's when it's time to stop. I will say that the "quality" of glass changes that a bunch. I'm primarily (trying to) shooting precision rifle... precisely. It's not easy. At least not for me. I've gone thru 350 rounds of .357 in a snubby in an hour on a Christmas Eve shooting by myself on the range. It happens fast. Handguns burn ammo. Lots of it. At least mine do. However I rarely shoot them. I will run a few cylinders thru my primary revolver every other month but I don't find it to be all that enjoyable. I'd rather shoot as far and small as I can. Generally I don't do either. I don't own a shotgun, so...

Hey, if you figured out how pick your bad guy before a gunfight, let me know. I know a whole bunch of guys that would be interested in how you do it. Whether you use a gun for defense, fun, or sport - there will always be someone better than you out there. The overriding goal of practice (in any activity) should be to get better regardless of your discipline. You should never feel you have become “good enough”, if you do you are lying to yourself. There is always something to get better at.

Ok cool, good time to be there for fishing off shore, especially for billfish! I text my buddy who runs a boat and is often in Hatteras, I think he might be in NJ by then though. If he's not avaiable I might be able to get a recommendation for you.

I understand wanting to take a gun apart and see how it works. Regular "detail stripping" is not needed. Even if you have the correct tools and know how to do it eventually some damage will be done. The only time a gun needs to be taken apart is if it's broken. Everytime I've ever taken a gun apart to repair I've always test fired it before that gun would be put back in service. Yes, there are function checks that don't involve live fire shooting. Nothing function checks as well as shooting it though. For that reason alone I would never use that service.

Depends on personal preference... If we are talking pistol grip only, I actually prefer the Raptor grip over a traditional pistol grip nowadays. Just feels a little more comfortable. The brace setup on my TAC-14 uses a regular pistol grip, but I do have a standard grip, if need be. For stocks, I like something like a Magpul stock. Rather have something more inline with the receiver/barrel.

Went to the SPCA, as well as the foster family for the rescue... adopting the one from the SPCA. I’m even shocked saying that. Called them around 12, said that the three of us (girlfriend and her daughter) were thinking about heading over. Supervisor who told me to contact her said she will be there to meet us. Everyone was extremely nice, and we didn’t bring anything up while meeting the new dog. The supervisor apologized to both myself and my girlfriend... and hoped that this dog would be a great candidate. Dog is a female lab mix. Very calm dog, and was awesome with her daughter. She actually loved the dog, even more than the previous (had to talk to her about what happened in the car). The dog is being spayed on Tuesday, so would pick her up on Wednesday. Told the girl we were also checking the other dogs, who said that she will make sure she is ours if we get back to her today. Went to the foster family, and they had three dogs. The one I originally was interested in (hound) was too crazy and constantly nipping our hands. Beautiful dog, but wasn’t a good fit. One of the two others was another I looked at online... but thought she was younger. Turned out to be just under a year old (tan Australian Cattle Dog... or so I was told), but was absolutely perfect with her daughter. Just a nice dog... but was told she had some issues from her upbringing. Working on walking with a leash, issues getting into cars, and would be scared of new settings. Considering that, I called the supervisor from the SPCA back when we left, and said we would adopt the dog. I feel that the people at the SPCA will make sure this dog will be there on Wednesday... and bringing my girlfriend and her daughter to bring her home. If something happens, going to definitely be an eventful visit... but the rescue’s dog will be my next dog (she has stuff to work on, but I would do my best to get her comfortable... as I would see her being an awesome dog). Didn’t take a picture of her prior to leaving, so will on Wednesday.

North Carolina is a nice state to retire in. The South West corner is beatiful as is the outer banks. I would never want to raise kids there the public schools are terrible. Not just north carolina all of the southern states public schools suck. I guess it would not be a bad place to live if you don't have any kids or or want any.

My point wasn’t about the running the tech. It was about running the scenarios. You need a proctor that is able to examine and dissect the actions and decision making process of the user during an AAR. Then go over them with the user in a way that the user will accept and cause self reflection on their mistakes and successes. The scenarios are like a choose your own adventure book. You can change them on the fly based on the actions of the user. You need someone experienced in use of force decision making and the legal standards of use of force at the very least. A bad proctor can create serious training scars at best and cause someone to use extremely bad judgment in a real world use of force situation at worst. Sure, anyone can run a zombie blast’em scenario with no ill effects - and they are actually very fun! But when you start getting into scenarios that simulate the legal use of force in real world conditions as a tool to hone the response of law abiding armed Americans, anything less than an experienced proctor is irresponsible, in my opinion anyway.

Sure, I’ll invite a stranger to come to my house and see all my guns, nothing could go wrong with that.

Can't argue with that logic. If it's 16 rounds or 30, it's not like you get additional months tacked onto the sentence for each round. After the first illegal round, all the others are FREE!
