Newest purchase, Smith and Wesson Model 10-5 snub nose. Always wanted a model 10 and this one spoke to me on Gunbroker. Something about the old Smiths really excites you when you hold one in your hand. Time to take her shooting.

Want to thank @Krdshrk for organizing this get together, 1st time out to WMA for a shoot. Was there with my 2 boys. Thanks to ALL for making us feel at home like part of the group, not like 1st timers, also for allowing us to try some different shotguns. Will definitely be attending others.

Had a good time. Boy did it get packed right after i got there. I had the manual sit-on thrower over on the other side of the structure. New shooter was a bit more comfortable over there. Got him busting clays after finding a gun that fit him a bit better. Attempted to head to rifle range...as did everyone else with a hunting license in north jersey apparently. Never even made it up to the parking lot. Good day, hot day, but nice to get out and see i havent completely forgotten how to shoot. Was nice seeing everyone.

Why don't you start here !!! https://www.anjrpc.org/page/train_class_schedule#NRA_Basic_Pistol_Classes NRA BASIC pistol class.... west caldwell is over by old bridge right??? Paging rosenthal, @Smokin .50 to the white courtesy phone please.... new shooter needs some assistance. Buying a FIRST gun is not like trying on pants....frankly, and no offense intended, you do not have the skill set to make judgments as to what is right or wrong....other than what might look cool to you. get basic training first....learn basics first....then when you have a good foundation...go buy something. MY first HG, was a G17...never ejected right....why limp wristing......brought it back...old guy says try this with this ammo.....he handed me a Model 19 4inch and 250 rounds of 38 wadcutters... the rest is water under the bridge. With a revolver it is simplistic....brute force reliable, and easy to see and understand mechanics of double and single action shooting. Will also help you establish proper grip trigger control etc...with a strong but not overpowering round....and if needed can do fine as a good self d gun....when you need it to go bang, pull the trigger...if it doesn't go bang pull the trigger again...and keep.pulling till it goes bang..or you need to reload... You can also swing by @gunforhire and check some things out.... My girls learned to shoot on the same model 19... This is not a difficult process....

Not trigger springs — recoil spring and mainspring — sounds like you didn’t touch either of them

He's asking what gun will it be shot in --you answered Sprung means have you put any lighter springs in the gun so it will function with lighter loads -- Is the gun factory sprung? Factory springs should handle the potentially higher power loads you will have -- If you have powder puff springs in the gun you should go back to the factory standard springs so you don't beat the crap out of your frame and slide

I've never loaded anything with LARGE Pistol Magnum primers. I use SMALL magnums with my hot .357 mag loads and the only large pistol standard primers I use are for .45acp and 10mm Rule of thumb is to reduce your powder charge by 0.5 gr when using magnum primers. Start low and watch for overpressure signs as you increase your powder charge. I don't use Clays, but 3.9 to 4.3 gr is a pretty narrow range. BE CAREFUL JOHNNY!!

Very accurate......hmmm Limited capacity... (scratches head) Average rounds fired in a self defense situation is 2.2.... Your fight is going to last as long ad your ammo... This is tje OPs FIRST handgun.... he needs to learn the basics.... once the basics are sound he can move to the next phase... I carry a 586 with 357 mag rounds and two reloads on speed loaders in the woods hiking where legal...i don't feel undergunned.

You picked up my shotgun that was hot because someone else made it hot by shooting it! How is that my fault? Just quit complaining, will ya? I even offered you beer and burgers after.

The sales tax I was talking about was on the service fee for the transfer + NICS. Not the item being transferred.

The FID requirement might be because we're registered with the State, either that and/or insurance purposes. Some FFLs will not let you touch a gun without a FID. I know we have part time residents as members. I don't know them directly, but I've heard them being announced. New members are introduced at the club meeting, nothing fancy, just name and town you're from. Best bet is to email Rob and see what he says. Just be patient, I think I waited a day to hear back from him the first time I reached out.

West Caldwell is in North Jersey, Old Bridge is in Central Jersey. People in my area of NJ say OB is in North Jersey, Caldwell would be considered New York! Yeah, they don't get it, but I understand them. OP, find someone with different types of guns that belongs to a range, or heck, you are very close to the range in Randolph on RT10, find someone to guest you in and try their guns. DON'T BUY ANYTHING YET!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those pesky permits take too long to get to waste them on something you may not like. I don't like MOST plastic guns, but a friend let me shoot two of his one day at OBRPC and I was shocked how well I did with one of them. It fit me perfect, I almost thought my friend was pulling the trigger, not me! He is a far better shooter than me yet I did excellent with his gun. I don't remember what brand or model, I would have to ask him, but it was a .40 Short and Weak (As Rosie loves to call that round!) If you could meet-up with Rosie (David Rosenthel) I would HIGHLY recommend it! He has a good assortment of guns and is an AWESOME teacher! You will be hard-pressed to find a better person to work with!

The first model 10 I ever shot had stag grips on it and it looked beautiful and felt great. Honestly new grips are due because although these grips look nice they are not the most durable. There is a small chunk of fake pearl wrapped around the grip screw that is preventing me from taking off the grip.

you know the range is still tagged "closed" on google maps, right?

Handgun ammo requires your FID and purchase is logged into the book. Buying online varies, some retailers want you to send them DL & FID some will not sell to you at all. There's a thread or 20 on here that give examples. Ammo is not light weight, make sure you factor in shipping costs.

Everything that @Heavyopp said. Start at a beginning load and looks for pressure signs.... All the springs in a 1911 make it run right....recoil, firing pin and hammer..and don't forget the trigger return grip safety etc...all need to be tuned right. Change the recoil spring....you gotta change the hammer spring..etc... The biggest issue you have is the narrow window of loads available prior to max... Is your measuring equip spot on?

If I could, I'd give you a double-like - one for the gun, and one for the best thread title of the year-to-date.

GREAT !!!!!! Where r u located? A Glock 17 is NOT starter handgun imo.. A revolver is brute force reliable and a fantastic weapon to start with... Mag fed semi auto weapons can be finicky....and reliant on many factors to work right...
  28. 1 point
What 45acp are you loading for? Is it properly sprung? You will not blow yourself up... Start with a starting load off by 5% ....look for pressure signs and go from there...

Your choice for a g17 as your FIRST handgun is a mistake... Have you any training? Have you EVER fired a 9mm before...? Do you know what limp wristing is...? A stovepipe? A FTF? An FTE? Do u understand sight alignment? Trigger control? U have not been counseled properly...you have been sold an item..... Basics basics basics basics....

I hate to bring this up. I am bringing a few women to this tomorrow, yes one is Smiles. After the last time my sis and friend told me that a few people were creeping on them. Please be respectful to them, as with anyone else. As it is there are vert few women let's not give them reasons not to join us. That is a very good point.

Redding makes great stuff. I have the Redding instant indicator and Competition shell holder set. They really work great as well as the Premium Die set for .223.

Your VERY first gun? I’m looking for something really simple Smith & Wesson Model 10 4" Revolver in 38 Special. Learn to shoot that first with target wad cutters.

It is a nice place, from what I can tell well run, never had a issue there. People that work there always seem happy and helpful. Must be doing something right.

The following are my opinions only and they come from someone with much less experience than many here. Also, the only Southpaw in my family is my Mother, so I can not offer direct advise there. Some mfg are more accommodating to lefties than others. You probably already knew that though from Rifles. Do not go larger than 9mm, 22 is best, but there will be limited options there. Fondle as many as you can. Heavier guns have less felt recoil. Longer barrelled guns increase the distance between the sights which makes it easier to aim. You don't "need" a $1500 1911 as your first handgun. Budget priced guns are great to start with while you decide what features you like and dislike. Some mfg have multiple size backstraps to accommodate various hand sizes. Some handguns allow you to remove the FCU (fire control unit) and install it into a third party frame for even further accommodations and customization. Just like with Rifles, the quality of the trigger matters. Dry fire anything you're permitted to. Revolvers are still a thing and some swear by using them as a platform to learn trigger discipline. Zeke will tell you to buy a SIG.

No, not really. But most here would rather horde ammo by the case every time a new law gets signed than spend less than $150 donating annually to the 3 biggest groups!

I think Alex (nj2as) and Dan (blue star) must have had a disagreement on the whole billboard campaign because the live streams ended abruptly and then blue star union was born and the billboard came up a week or so ago. we have too much splintering in the nj 2A world. I get it that each association has their purpose but I would expect them to have some type of “summit” to coordinate their efforts (maybe I’m wrong but there is always strength in numbers).

Old Bridge's outdoor facility, consisting of our Chrono pit, 7 regular pits plus a dedicated scattergun range is now OPEN! We've been shooting since Friday May 22nd. I guess it's worth it ~R

Glad I made the trek up North, even though I burned through a lot of gas. Came home to plumbing and appliance headaches though and still have company coming over I have to cook for.
