I work in a gun store and I get to fondle guns all day, everyday. When a customer comes in with no clue about what duty-size striker to buy, I show them everything. After taking the customer "around the world", the guns I sell most are Glock 19/17/45, Sig p320 and Walther PDP. If I was looking at another of this type of gun, I would go with a full size Walther PDP. It really is a nice gun and it practically sells itself. I have sold 5 this week. fyi....Smith & Wesson is the brand of gun we send out for warranty repair the most often. And I mean a LOT more often than any other top tier brand.

It's up to you but I sold my only AR15 not long ago, while I still could! I don't know if any forum members have more than one. I wonder why you never tried out your AR15 since I also got mine at the same time and paid over $1,500.00 for the same rifle, USED!. I did shoot it before I sold it though.....At a MUCH lower price than I paid for it! Don't expect to get get near what you paid but something is better than the nothing when they are confiscated! I'm more of a bolt action and shotgun kinda guy anyway.

This. Just drive like a normal person and it won't be an issue.

The thoughtful part of my reply was all me. My buddy Jim Beam was responsible for the part where I sounded like a jerk, but he was right.

Can't believe some of the comments here! Everyone is in a goddamn hurry to comply with a non-existent ban! Forget the AR-15's, some of you need to purchase copious amounts of LUBE!!!!!

Any gun that hasn't been fired yet by the owner is not a good SHTF weapon. Instead of buying another rifle, spend some money on training. In the long run you will be better off.

That is only a good plan if by 'SHTF insurance', you mean you plan to sell or trade it in a SHTF scenario, and you think it will be more valuable if NIB. But that's probably not what you meant. And probably not that good of an idea anyway. As everyone else has pointed out, if you are counting on it for defense, you need to get out and shoot it. You need to sight it in, for starters--rifles don't leave the factory pre-set to magically put the bullets where you want them. Everyone sees the sights and holds the firearm a little differently. You also need to shoot it enough to make sure it is reliable, and if it isn't, you need to fiddle with the gun and/or ammo until it is. And finally, you need to shoot it enough to become safe and proficient. Really proficient.

I had an XM15. It was problematic and required some new parts to make it run reliably. If it is your SHTF insurance policy, you should probably make sure it’s reliable and set up properly for SHTF.

I just tell her it's the same M1! Never open when the boss is present!

I'm sorry am I missing something here. If you have an AR and never plan to shoot it why get a second one based on FOMO? You should wait till you move out of NJ and buy something else otherwise you will have to take both ARs on a fishing trip if Biden gets his way.

I've carried the 17, 19, and 26 for at least a few years each. I carried the 17 concealed which a lot of people said is impossible. I can shoot any of them well however when they came out with the 26 scores of agents bought them. They could shoot the 19 okay but the 26 was a little too small for them to the point they couldn't qualify with it. The 19 is the sweet spot. Not too big, not too small.

Only 1 AR? Eww. And I'm not even a big AR fan. You can always buy lowers. Build em up, NJ compliant, or hang onto em until you move. Or a few uppers to swap onto the AR you have. Or buy a NJ compliant rifle now. You can change out the stuff NJ forces on you when you move. Worst case, a new upper if you want every "evil" feature. I wouldn't care too much about a bayonet lug, so could probably get away with a new stock, and figure out removing a muzzle device. Dunno what the future holds. A bunch of lowers might be the best insurance policy if that is what concerns you.

Are you retarded? You buy a SHTF AR, and it's unfired, epic plan. Go buy another rifle and spend some quality time at the range bonding with your old lady. It will make your marriage stronger.

Picked up an M&P Shield plus in 9mm, like it, trigger is nice and it’s a 10 round mag. Bought it for a HD gun, takes some practice getting use to a small polymer gun, you need to really pay attention to grip, trigger finger placement to be able to take advantage of the gun, was a bit frustrating at the start but I am growing to like it more and more. If a hammer fired is on your list, I would suggest a 1911, in what ever flavor round you like, have a colt in .45 acp, one of my favorite guns, handles very easily, shoots like a dream. Also just picked up a Kimber custom LW in 9mm, I see this one becoming my favorite pistol, being use to the colt already this was an easy purchase, shoots very soft, extremely accurate and a ton of fun. The Kimber will be under your 1k budget

VP9 - great trigger, extremely accurate, and I love the paddle mag release. I shoot it well. Aced a tactical shooting course with it. M&P 2.0 9 or 45 - Good trigger, love the grip angle. Very natural. I shoot it well. Glock anything - The Toyota of handguns. Easily serviced, always goes bang, and with a little help the trigger becomes comparable. I shoot them all from 9 to 10mm well enough for SD purposes. Walther PPQ 9 or 45 - Great trigger, probably the best, slightly lighter than the VP9. But it gives me pause for thought were I in a SD situation. My M1 versions also have the paddle mag release. Note this: I've shot all of them a lot. You should shoot what you're considering in advance of purchase if at all possible. Your mileage may vary from mine. Take all of this as strictly my opinion, not facts provable via the scientific method. And BTW, how do you like the trigger on that Shadow 2?

In NJ YOU could have had a 19 and it would have met the 15-round magazine size until the Progressives that are weak on VIOLENT CRIMINALS decided to continue to harrass law-abiding Americans, instead. But, additionally, it is generally thought of as more versatile as easier to conceal, etc. I personally prefer the subjective feel and balance of the 19 over the 17. I would imagine you cannot go wrong with either. Plus the 19 will also take 17 round magazines where the Constitution means something, and if you move to a more free place, then you will already have practice with a more concealable firearm and own one. I prefer shooting the full size M&P over the Compacts but like them all none the less. A 9mm revolver might also be fun if you can find one. You could probably get two S&W M&Ps for the price of one of those other guns you own/mentioned. The thin Glock 19... I forget the number, might also be a nice investment. Have you handled a Beretta 92 variety?

Okay, you mentioned a bias against it, but a Glock 19 is the best all around 9mm pistol made. I've only been shooting for over 50 years, been a firearms instructor for over 45 years, WTFdo I know.

Have You Ever Danced? An old prospector shuffled into town leading an old tired mule. The old man headed straight for the only saloon to clear his parched throat. He walked up and tied his old mule to the hitch rail. As he stood there, brushing some of the dust from his face and clothes, a young gunslinger stepped out of the saloon with a gun in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other. The young gunslinger looked at the old man and laughed, saying, "Hey old man, have you ever danced?" The old man looked up at the gunslinger and said, "No, I never did dance... never really wanted to." A crowd had gathered as the gunslinger grinned and said, "Well, you old fool, you're gonna dance now," and started shooting at the old man's feet. The old prospector --not wanting to get a toe blown off-- started hopping around like a flea on a hot skillet. Everybody was laughing, fit to be tied. When his last bullet had been fired, the young gunslinger, still laughing, holstered his gun and turned around to go back into the saloon. The old man turned to his pack mule, pulled out a double-barreled shotgun, and cocked both hammers. The loud clicks carried clearly through the desert air. The crowd stopped laughing immediately. The young gunslinger heard the sounds too, and he turned around very slowly. The silence was almost deafening. The crowd watched as the young gunman stared at the old-timer and the large gaping holes of those twin barrels. The barrels of the shotgun never wavered in the old man's hands, as he quietly said, "Son, have you ever licked a mule's ass?" The gunslinger swallowed hard and said, "No sir..... but... I've always wanted to." There are a few lessons for us all here: Never be arrogant. Don't waste ammunition. Whiskey makes you think you're smarter than you are. Always, always make sure you know who has the power. Don't mess with old men, they didn't get old by being stupid. I just love a story with a happy ending, don't you?
